Dear Students and Faculty,

As the final weeks of the semester are before us, I write to thank you for the kindness and support you have given each other during this very productive semester.

As always, I take this opportunity to remind students to seek all the support they need during the semester and to pre-register to ensure a successful Spring 2025 semester. Please be sure not to let the semester end without being part of the solution. So very much appreciated.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

“Simple Gifts”

By Anonymous

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,

'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gain'd,

To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,

To turn, turn will be our delight

'Till by turning, turning we come round right.

What You Need to Know About Artificial Intelligence Scams

The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) urges all New Yorkers to know the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) scams. DCWP offers tips about how to stay safe and vigilant. As advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning continue to impact many aspects of our lives, consumers should keep up to date with the newest types of scams that may target them and their loved ones. Using AI voice-cloning technology to ask for money or personal information, scammers may try to impersonate your family and friends. Scammers may also use deepfake technology to alter pictures or videos to impersonate public figures or loved ones.

Signs It's a Voice-Cloning Scam:

  • You are contacted out of the blue.
  • You are pressured to act immediately, with no time to think.
  • The caller is urgently requesting money, usually through a wire transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency. These payment methods make it nearly impossible to get a refund once you've been scammed.
  • The caller is requesting personal or private information from you.
  • You are told to keep the caller's request a secret.

Signs It's a Deepfake Scam:

  • Look for signs of an altered video, including jerky or unrealistic movements, shifts in lighting or skin tone, strange or no blinking, and shadows around the eyes. Listen for inconsistencies.
  • Is the speaker acting out of character, like asking for money or personal information? Deepfake videos often feature strange word choices, stilted language, and choppy sentences. The caller requests money, usually urgently and through a hard-to-trace method like a wire transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency.

How to Respond:

  • Ask questions. Caller ID can be faked. Although a scammer may sound like a loved one, they won't be able to answer personal questions that only your real loved one would know the answer to. You can ask them to confirm details that aren't publicly available.
  • Be skeptical. Hang up and call the person back, but don't simply redial the number that called you – call their trusted number. If you can't reach that loved one directly, try to reach out through another family member or friend.
  • Stop and think. Urgency is one of a scammer's most powerful tools to get you to do what they want. You can take control of the situation by pausing for a moment to consider the situation rationally.

You can report scams online to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC will use your report to investigate and bring cases against other frauds, scams, and bad business practices.

Anyone who needs financial advice, including those who may have fallen for a scam, should visit the NYC Financial Empowerment Center for free, one-on-one professional financial counseling. NYC Financial Empowerment Centers can help New Yorkers manage their money, establish or improve their credit, set up a spending plan, open a safe and affordable bank account, contact their lenders about debt, including student loans, develop a strategy to reduce debt or lower payments, access emergency government resources, and more. Since 2008, NYC Financial Empowerment Centers have served more than 73,000 clients, helping to reduce their debt by more than $100 million and helping them save more than $11 million. New Yorkers can book a free and confidential appointment with a professional financial counselor by visiting nyc.gov/TalkMoney or calling 311 and saying "Financial Counseling." Services are available in person or by phone and in multiple languages.

Universal Human Rights Month

December is recognized as Universal Human Rights Month, a time for people in the United States and around the world to join together and stand up for the rights and dignity of all individuals.  As stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights drafted by the United Nations in 1948 in response to the atrocities of World War II: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of [sibling]hood.”

Thus, we must remember that all human beings were born into the same world as we were and that, despite our differences, we must learn to function in this world together.  Universal Human Rights Month is about acknowledging that people of different races, religions, cultures, beliefs, genders, and identities are still just that: people.  As we embrace Universal Human Rights Month, let us reflect on the principles that unite us all.  Let us strive for a campus that upholds dignity, equality, and justice for every individual.  Together, as a college community, we can foster an environment where human rights are respected and celebrated. Together, as a college community, we can be catalysts for positive change and be champions of diversity, equity and inclusiveness.  Therefore, take the time to learn about someone else’s culture or identity that is different from yours… research their history or perhaps make a new friend who is a member of a different culture or identity.  You will quickly realize how similar people really are, and you will see how critical it is that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Social Sciences Speakers Series: “Refugee Resettlement in the U.S.”

On November 13, the Social Sciences Speakers Series resumed with an informative and engaging presentation about the history and contemporary circumstances of refugees and immigrants in the United States. The Social Sciences Unit and the Hostos Politics Club were excited to welcome Dr. Shyam Sriram of Canisius University to discuss his new co-authored book, Refugee Resettlement in the U. S. Dr. Sriram provided relevant information about the definitional differences between “refugees,” “immigrants,” and “migrants.” He also discussed the implications of our national elections and global policies for the futures of refugees and immigrants in the coming months and years. Dr. Sriram also helped students better understand the national and local implications of refugee and immigration policy, bringing this issue into the homes of students. Students answered questions to receive signed copies of Dr. Sriram’s book and asked insightful questions after the presentation. Nearly thirty students, faculty, and staff members attended the event, and several stayed behind to talk to Dr. Sriram about information from his presentation and ask further questions. This was another successful installment during the tenth anniversary year of the Social Sciences Speakers Series. Read more about it here.

Recommendation Letter Workshop

On November 13, Dr. Shyam Sriram, with Director of Transfer Services Rocio Rayo, led an exciting and interactive workshop on how to find the best people for references, how to ask for strong letters, and how to build lifelong relationships with professors and mentors. Dr. Sriram shared helpful and humorous dos and don’ts with students and showed real-life examples of successful and unsuccessful attempts at asking for letters. Not only did students learn about best practices for future applications, but Dr. Sriram and Ms. Rayo ended the session by sharing inspirational personal experiences with their first college mentors, with whom they stay in contact and continue to write letters for them to this day.

Honors Program

Program Visits Whitney Museum

Submitted by Ernest Ialongo, Cynthia Jones, and Karla Contreras

"Edges of Ailey is one of--if not the--most ambitious and complex exhibitions undertaken in the Museum's history." (Foreword, 6)

The Honors Program journeyed to the Whitney Museum and was guided through a survey of Alvin Ailey's contribution to dance and his representation of the Black experience.

The group was impressed by the immersive multichannel video installation and the creative works of eighty artists. There was much to see, and the consensus is another visit is warranted.

In addition, through the generous support of College Now, some Honors students were able to attend a Broadway show for the consecutive year. The play  Hell's Kitchen was both entertaining and educational for our students.

These trips were supported by the Office of Academic Affairs, Student Activities, and College Now at Hostos.

POEMS FOR THE COMMUNITY

“Giving is All We Have”

By Alberto Ríos

One river gives Its journey to the next.

We give because someone gave to us.

We give because nobody gave to us.

We give because giving has changed us.

We give because giving could have changed us.

We have been better for it,

We have been wounded by it –

Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,

Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.

Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,

But we read this book, anyway, over and again:

Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,

Mine to yours, yours to mine.

You gave me blue and I gave you yellow.

Together we are simple green. You gave me

What you did not have, and I gave you

What I had to give – together, we made

Something greater from the difference.

Follow up on Town Hall for the Move of Faculty and Staff from B Building 3rd Floor

As mentioned in the previous Semanario, a Town Hall meeting was scheduled for November 20 from 3:30-5 pm for faculty and staff in the B-Building 3rd Floor to discuss the upcoming move to the A Building swing space and the renovation of the 3rd floor. Occupants of the B Building 2nd and 4th floors were also invited.

SVP Rodriguez-Chardavoyne, Robert Lev, the contractor, the construction management team, the moving coordinator, and representatives from Hostos Facilities, Health and Safety, IT, and Public Safety were present to discuss the construction scope, timeline, and essential preparations and answer questions from the college community. Included in the Meeting Agenda was an FAQ list that covered the Project Timeline, Asbestos Abatement, Decluttering, Packing, and Moving, the procedures for returning old keys and issuing new keys, and IT preparations.

Renovation of the 3rd Floor is expected to take up to 18 months, with a planned return to 500 GC by June 2026. The work areas will be off-limits to the college community during the construction process. The asbestos abatement process will be carried out according to all relevant New York State and federal regulations, ensuring the safety of all staff and the environment. A certified asbestos abatement contractor will remove any asbestos-containing materials (ACM) affected by the renovation. A third-party project monitor, certified by NYS, will oversee the abatement process to ensure compliance with safety standards. The monitor will be on-site for regular inspections throughout the project. Hostos’ Health and Safety Officer, Marya Shuksta, will also be present to ensure safety standards are met. A NYS-certified air monitor will collect environmental air samples during and after each phase of the abatement. This is to confirm that all work practices are being properly implemented and to ensure air quality remains safe.

As the renovation project progresses, periodic updates will be provided to the college community.
