El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, February 16, 2024 | Vol. 8, No. 4

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As the new semester begins to settle in, I hope you are enjoying this respite in the weather and the company of our students and one another.

This past week BronxNet featured our Hostos Center for the Culture and Arts in a Spanish language program that paid tribute to the importance of the arts and the community at Hostos.  A very special thank you to our Director Felix Arocho, the Bronx Council for the Arts Director Lucia Wark-Meister, Prof. Angel Morales, and our Communications team led by Ivano Leoncavallo. Additionally, our very own Lady Caimans were also featured in the local press as they aim for another chance at winning the national championship! Bravi to the coach, athletes and all of their fans!

As we navigate challenges, stay focused on our true North. Education is the door of opportunity for our students, and it is a joy to see their lives transformed because of the work of so many people of good will. As I mentioned before, Hostos was again selected to participate in the Aspen 2025 Community College of Excellence process. We submitted our application in December, a special thank you to a wonderful team, led by our own Dean Babette Audant.  Recently, we were invited to interview as we move to the next level. Our interview is scheduled for early March. Fingers crossed!

I wish you a wonderful long weekend.  Some of us will be in Albany for the CUNY luncheon on Saturday.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

A POEM TO HONOR DOMINICAN HERITAGE

“ELEGIA SEGUNDA (FRAGMENTO)” in La tierra escrita

By Aída Cartagena Portalatín

                                                                           alimentos

ni frazadas y techos

levantar estatuas. Deber de amor son esas cosas.

Deber del hombre por todos los HOMBRES.

“SECOND ELEGY (FRAGMENT)”

My mother was one of the great mothers

of the world.

From her womb were born seven children who would be

in Dallas, Memphis or Birmingham,

a racial question.

(Neither Black nor White)

Lola who kept her house for thirty years

does not forget her and each time

the cold wind comes down our valley

those who were given her light, warm blankets

remember her too.

Mama knew nothing of political theory

(papel encyclical or Marx)

She only understood that the poor suffered hunger,

begged bread, needed shelter.

One lady journalist called her

a one-women program for social assistance.

And now women of virtuous lives and those

who missed the straight path

miss her sorely.

Her acts were the duty of love.

Mamá, Olimpia, mama.

The public should not raise monuments

To sacks of groceries, blankets, roofs.

Such things are the duty of love.

Educating for Diversity Initiative Supports Black History Month Events

This month as we celebrate Black History Month, I am delighted to share that the Educating for Diversity – Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiative is sponsoring two of the special events offered as part of the Black Studies Black History and Futures Month Program, led by Professors Ana Ozuna, Anamaría Flores, and Cynthia Jones, along with the support of the Black Student Union and Student Government Association student officers. As Prof. Ozuna shared, this year's month-long celebration theme is African Americans and the Arts, which explores how African-descended people contribute to artistic movements and expand transgenerational and transcultural artistic art forms in the United States. It also aligns with the 2024 theme the Association of the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) established.

The Educating for Diversity grant is sponsoring two dance-focused workshops. The first was held this week on February 14, an Afro-Brazilian Dance Workshop led by Janete Da Silva, a highly accomplished dancer, choreographer, performer, and educator, who engaged participants in learning a beautiful fusion of Afro-Brazilian traditional dances and techniques that brought to life Brazil’s rich cultural and artistic history. Next week, on February 20, Mestre Alegria Leandro Silva, a professionally trained dancer of various styles who has toured the world as a member of the DanceBrazil dance company, will be leading a Capoeira workshop. Capoeira is the Afro-Brazilian martial and dance art form developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil that helped them fight for their freedom during the colonial period. This special presentation will feature Brazilian songs, instruments, and a capoeira lesson for all participants. I hope that students, faculty, and staff can participate in the wonderful activities offered in honor and celebration of Black History Month. Please check the Hostos monthly calendar of events here for more information on upcoming events.

Do You Qualify for the Fair Fares MetroCard Program?

Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help low-income New Yorkers manage their transportation costs. Using the Fair Fares NYC MetroCard, eligible New York City residents receive a 50% discount on subway and eligible bus fares. Pay-per-ride, weekly unlimited, and monthly unlimited options are all available. Fair Fares can also provide 50% off MTA Access-A-Ride paratransit trips. Because Access-A-Ride customers do not use a MetroCard, their discount is applied automatically to their Access-A-Ride trips once their Fair Fares and Access-A-Ride accounts are linked.

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 64, live in New York City, meet income limits (see website), and not receive a discounted MetroCard from any other New York City program.

Visit the Fair Fares website to check your eligibility, create an account, and apply.

Student Spotlight

First transfer spotlight of the semester! We are super excited to introduce Ms. Sabrina Salas. Sabrina majored in Liberal Arts through the Early College Program with Hostos Lincoln Academy Early College, graduating with her high school diploma and her Associate in Arts degree in 2018. Sabrina completed her bachelor’s at Lawrence University and is now pursuing her Ph.D. back at home at CUNY!

“I won the Posse Scholarship, which took me to Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin for college. There I majored in cultural anthropology and decided to further my education in anthropology so I applied for graduate school. And now I’m back at CUNY, doing a Ph.D. in anthropology at the Graduate Center,” said Sabrina.

“My advice to students is not to let fear stop you. I almost didn’t apply to graduate school, not because I didn’t want to go but because a Ph.D. sounded scary. I thought I wouldn’t be ‘good enough’ or ‘smart enough’ for it, whatever that means, but I still decided to move forward with applying because I thought… ‘well, it doesn’t hurt to try.’ While it’s been a challenge, it’s nothing that I can’t handle! Don’t let fear get in the way of what you want to do in life,” she concluded.

From Hostos to Ph.D.s… we love to see it!

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“Who Will Cry for the Little Boy?”

By Antwone Fisher

Who will cry for the little boy?

Lost and all alone.

Who will cry for the little boy?

Abandoned without his own?

Who will cry for the little boy?

He cried himself to sleep.

Who will cry for the little boy?

He never had for keeps.

Who will cry for the little boy?

He walked the burning sand

Who will cry for the little boy?

The boy inside the man.

Who will cry for the little boy?

Who knows well hurt and pain

Who will cry for the little boy?

He died again and again.

Who will cry for the little boy?

A good boy he tried to be

Who will cry for the little boy?

Who cries inside of me.

Microsoft MFA Implementation

In the first Semanario (January 26), we informed the community that an important security enhancement – MFA – would be implemented across CUNY Microsoft M365 products in February. MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication), as stated in IT’s Technology Services web page, is a security mechanism that requires users to provide multiple forms of identification before they can access a system. Security is enhanced by adding an additional layer of authentication on top of the traditional User Name and Password combination. Examples of additional authentication factors include a smartphone with an authentication app, a security key/token, a password/code sent via SMS, and biometric data (such as face recognition, fingerprint, etc.).

This change will impact all CUNY users when they try accessing Microsoft M365 Products (Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Word Online, Excel Online, etc.). This change will not affect Hostos webmail or other CUNY sites/services/applications.

Hostos Technologies has provided step sheets and guides for the college community to set up different authentication factors. They can be found on the Technology Services – MFA web page (https://www.hostos.cuny.edu/mfa). The step sheets currently include the following:

How to Log into Office

How to view your account settings

How to Review your Security info/sign in methods

How to Add a new Sign-in Method

How to Add an Authenticator App as a MFA

How to add your Phone as an authenticator (SMS or Call)

How to Setup your MFA with an alternate phone (ONLY PHONE CALL)

How to Setup your MFA with your office phone (ONLY PHONE CALL)

How to Change your default sign in the MFA method

Please contact the IT Help Desk if you have any questions.
