El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, February 24, 2023 | Vol. 6, No. 6

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

It is a joy to write these few words to share the good news that we have received an earmark grant for $1 million to support the transfer of our students by means of 2 + 2 agreement with Columbia University for Public Health, City College of New York for Engineering and Queens College for Arts Administration. Please see the CUNY announcement here.

This past week as part of a number of budget advocacy meetings, it was good to have Councilmember Eric Dinowitz, Chair of the Higher Education Committee for the City Council, visit the College. The Councilmember, a father of young children and a former teacher, visited our Children’s Center. He read not one but two books at the request of the children—great fun was had by all!

In this Semanario, you will find detailed information about enrollments this spring both from Provost Wang and VP Yates. I am left to say, “gracias,” the All Hands-on-Deck/Manos a la Obra approach has produced very encouraging results. Let us then redouble our efforts on retention by means of effective teaching, learning, advisement, and support activities.

Thank you for your continued support and please do join a number of activities and conversations around diversity and student success taking place on our campus.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEM

The Teacher’s Prayer

By Gabriela Mistral

Lord, you who taught, forgive me that I teach; forgive me that I bear the name of teacher, the name you bore on earth.

Grant me such devoted love for my school that not even beauty's flame will detract from my faithful tenderness.

Master, make my fervor longlasting and my disillusion brief. Uproot from me this impure desire for justice that still troubles me, the petty protest that rises up within me when I am hurt. Let not the incomprehension of others trouble me, or the forgetfulness of those I have taught sadden me.

Let me be more maternal than a mother; able to love and defend with all of a mother's fervor the child that is not flesh of my flesh. Grant that I may be successful in molding one of my pupils into a perfect poem, and let me leave within her my deepest felt melody that she may sing for you when my lips shall sing no more.

Make me strong in my faith that your Gospel is possible in my time, so that I do not renounce the daily battle to make it live.

Let your luminous radiance descend upon my modest school as it did upon the barefoot children who surrounded you.

Make me strong even in my weakness as a woman, and particularly as a poor woman. Make me scorn all power that is not pure, and all duress that is not your flaming will upon my life.

Friend, go with me, sustain me! Often I shall have no one but Thee at my side. When my teaching becomes more perfect and my truth more burning,

I shall be left apart from those of the world, but then Thou wilt press me against Thy heart, which has known its fill of solitude and desertion. I shall not seek approval except in Thy glance.

Grant me simplicity and make me profound; free me from being complicated or banal in my daily lesson.

Grant that each morning when I enter my school I may lift my eyes above my wounded heart. May I not carry to my desk my little material longings, my petty griefs.

Lighten my hand in punishment and make it still gentler in caresses. May I reprimand with regret, that I may know I have corrected in love.

Grant that I give spiritual form to my brick schoolbuilding. May the brightness of my enthusiasm envelop its poor entrance, its bare room. May my heart be more a column for it and my goodwill more golden than the columns and gold of wealthy schools.

And finally, remind me from the paleness of Velázquez’s canvas, that to teach and to love intensely on earth is to arrive at the last day with the lance thrust of Longinus through one’s heart.

Translated by Rachel Loughbridge, Central Michigan College.

MS. MACKENZIE SCOTT’S GIFT: PRESIDENT’S INITIATIVES

Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I am delighted to share great news regarding the development of the space that will house the Hostos Research Center (HRC), one of the key programs established through the Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives. The Hostos Research Center is located in the C-Building lobby (C-130) in the space that formerly housed the Bookstore and is right next to the Hostos Main Theater. The long-awaited furniture for the new space was recently delivered, installed, and it transformed the space into a welcoming environment that is designed to support research development, faculty-student mentorship, and serve as a venue for hosting research presentations and learning opportunities for the Hostos community.

Over the past several months, I have been collaborating with Professor Yoel Rodríguez, Chair of the Hostos Research Center, planning the design and different uses of the space with the guidance and support of our campus facilities and IT team including Elizabeth Friedman, Jairo Lema, and Michael Nakano, along with the vendors that are providing the equipment, furniture, and signage. Developing this new space has been and continues to be a team effort, and it is wonderful to see the results of our planning efforts. I am extremely grateful to my colleagues for extending their vision and support.

The space is designed to be flexible in order to promote faculty and student engagement on research projects, faculty and student mentoring, and can be configured for conference-style presentations where we can set up chairs for a small audience and have our faculty and staff present findings on their latest research projects. We can also transform the space to present capacity-building and professional development opportunities for our faculty, students, and staff. I will also be moving to the office that is on the second floor of the space, which will give me the opportunity to engage with faculty and students, learn about their research in more depth, and identify areas where I can be of support. I look forward to welcoming you to the space once I am settled in, and we will invite the Hostos community to the official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Hostos Research Center, an auspicious moment in our College’s history.

Enrollment Report

Hostos census enrollment for the Spring 2023 term reflects 4,809 students as compared to 4,457 for Spring 2022. This represents a 7.3% increase primarily attributable to an increased headcount in transfer and continuing students. We also saw positive trends in first-time freshmen and readmits. Other positive indicators show an increase in the number of degree-seeking students for Spring 2023 compared to Spring 2022. These data points are a positive sign for our future enrollment and have reversed three consecutive years of declining enrollment.

Strategies to Retain Students

We are excited that our Spring 2023 enrollment has increased. It is equally important to work together to retain the students and support them in achieving their academic goals.

I want to share with you the strategies that the Office of Academic Affairs plans to adopt, working with faculty and the SDEM division, to retain students:

  • Succeed@Hostos: We plan to roll out the Mid-Term Alert campaign once again in mid-March. With the faculty's help in identifying high-risk students, we will be able to provide targeted support to those who may be struggling academically and connect them with the relevant student support services for help.
  • Faculty/Coach Liaison: The collaboration between faculty and coach liaison could ensure that we have a holistic approach to guiding students.
  • Professional Development: Improving teaching and learning is a crucial part of our retention efforts. The Center for Teaching and Learning will continue to provide professional development opportunities for faculty members.
  • Building Community: Many departments and offices have been offering events and activities to help students connect with each other and build a sense of belonging. This Spring semester we will have the first Student Symposium to provide students with the opportunity to present their work and expand their portfolios with faculty mentors’ guidance. Please reach out to Dean Andrea Fabrizio (afabrizio@hostos.cuny.edu) if you have any questions about the Student Symposium.
  • Pathways: Establishing clear pathways for our students is essential to ensuring their success. Career Services has been working with academic programs to create clear and well-defined academic and career pathways that will help our students navigate their future.

I hope you will support these initiatives and work with us to ensure the success of our students. Together, we can make a significant impact on our students and help them achieve their academic goals.

Math and Writing Supplemental Instruction Peer Leaders and Faculty Come Together to Share Best Practices

Supplemental Instruction (SI) at Hostos was first implemented in math courses in 2012 to connect students with peers who would help them develop study skills and learning techniques through weekly study groups in order to successfully pass their courses. Since then, SI has gone through a series of iterations and has been expanded to a variety of courses across disciplines, including writing in 2015. In its current iteration, SI at Hostos supports both math and writing co-requisite courses to help students get out of remediation faster.

As SI has proven to be an effective learning support model that helps build community and a sense of belonging for all involved, Drs. Reyes and Nguyen spearheaded Hostos's first joint SI professional development event on February 3, 2023. Bringing together math and writing peer leaders, as well as faculty, to exchange ideas about the different ways in which SI leaders and faculty collaborate to create a welcoming environment for students provided a great opportunity for everyone to learn from each other.

Over twenty SI peer leaders, as well as faculty, participated in dialogue and activities to build trust, listening and communication strategies, and motivation. English and Math peer leaders shared strategies for leading review sessions, mediating between students and professors, and nurturing persistence and study skills in students. We thank everyone who attended and who encouraged us to pursue future collaborations!

Advisors Help Students Stay on Track after Faculty Raised Attendance Concerns in Succeed@Hostos

I’m happy to share that the Early Alert / Succeed@Hostos Progress Survey helped me connect with 27 students about attendance concerns this month. I emailed students to let them know that an attendance concern had been raised, and I asked them if they were okay. Many of them responded to let me know that they were okay but managing scheduling adjustments due to work and family responsibilities, and others notified me that they had been in class and were glad to be notified so they could check in with their professors about the attendance record. In one case, a student shared with me that both their parents are experiencing chronic illnesses, and being their caretaker while being in school was proving to be extra challenging. We talked through some strategies, and by the end of the week, the student was able to secure a home health attendant to care for the student’s loved ones while the student was in class. Thank you to all who raised a flag—that helps us address student challenges and builds a sense of interconnectedness with the campus!

The Office of Academic Affairs and Succeed@Hostos Teams express our sincerest gratitude to all instructors and advisors who participated in the Early Alert progress survey. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our students and help them achieve their academic goals. A Mid-Term Alert Progress Survey will be opened toward the middle of March 2023. More information will be released soon.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT

Submitted by VP La Toro Yates, Ph.D.

Enrollment Update

The Spring 2023 enrollment cycle has ended with improved enrollment (approximately 7.3% overall and 15.1% FTEs). As expressed by the Provost, SDEM, in partnership with OAA, is creating opportunities to re-imagine multiple areas/processes impacting enrollment. The goal is to help shift enrollment back to pre-pandemic levels with initiatives that can help yield positive results. Efforts to influence the Fall 2023 enrollment are already in progress, a few are listed below:

  • Allied Health Nursing Admission pilot program: In Spring 2023, the nursing application was revised. Students applying for the Nursing program were admitted to Hostos under a Liberal Arts AA degree pathway. The changes were communicated to the student by OAA.
  • The Onboarding process was revamped for the Spring 2023 enrollment cycle, with enrollment sessions being separate from student orientation. Once a student is enrolled, they take part in the various events the college offers to orient and welcome them to the new semester (i.e. FYE Orientation, Weeks of Welcome).
  • SEM (Strategic Enrollment Management) Plan: The SEM framework was submitted for review and feedback. SDEM leadership will be working with consultant Anna Pond on the SEM draft to submit to the President by March/April.

SDEM recognizes that our ongoing services, updated policies, and new initiatives can help shape students’ priorities and experiences here at Hostos, increasing enrollment and retention. Let’s continue this momentum and work together to offer superior student-centric services as we prepare for the next enrollment cycle.

Admissions

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment created a series of 12 Campus Tour Group sessions for spring 2023. These sessions are available for registration on the Admissions and Recruitment website.

On the other hand, the week of February 13, 2023, marked the kick-off week of our spring recruitment cycle. While the outreach calendar continues to grow, we have already solidified 60 activities for the spring semester. These activities include high school fairs, general college fairs, personal visits, information sessions, and campus tours. In addition, the Office of Admissions and Recruitment is collaborating with the Office of the Bronx Borough President to participate in the 2023 Educational College Fair on Saturday, March 11, at Lehman College. We have confirmed support from the Office of Financial Aid, ASAP, College Discovery, and CEWD.

Mother to Son

By Langston Hughes

Well, son, I'll tell you:

Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

It's had tacks in it,

And splinters,

And boards torn up,

And places with no carpet on the floor-

Bare.

But all the time

I'se been a-climbin' on,

And reachin' landin's,

And turnin' corners,

And sometimes goin' in the dark

Where there ain't been no light.

So, boy, don't you turn back.

Don't you set down on the steps.

'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.

Don't you fall now-

For I'se still goin', honey,

I'se still climbin',

And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

College Catering Policy and Business Procedure for Catering/Food Orders

When the Hostos Café reopened in January with A La Carte Menu Services, Inc. as its new food service provider, the Office of Procurement had informed the community that A La Carte would also be the exclusive catering provider for the college and would be providing additional details as to the catering services.

The Office of Procurement is pleased to share the new Catering Policy and the CUNYfirst Business Procedure for Processing Catering/Food Orders. The goal of the Catering Policy is to achieve the maximum value from the use of institutional funds for food orders. The college can take advantage of lower food costs by using A La Carte’s volume purchase agreements, using their staff who are trained and already on the schedule, and using the college’s own equipment. Related costs associated with catering events, such as clean-up, are already included in the pricing structure of food provided by A La Carte. The Catering Policy also provides a useful Funds Expense Matrix, which shows various expense categories (events) and the type of college funds (Tax Levy, Auxiliary, Foundation, non-Tax Levy) that can be used towards those categories.

The CUNYfirst Business Procedure for Processing Catering/Food Orders details the criteria and the steps for placing catering orders. The document emphasizes the importance of (a) submitting a CUNYfirst Requisition with the required forms and (b) supporting documentation and receiving a valid Purchase Order from the Procurement Office before placing an order with A La Carte. Users will also find resource links and helpful tips to assist them in successfully placing catering orders.

These two documents will be distributed to staff who are responsible for submitting requisitions as well as be made available for the community to view on the Office of Procurement and Hostos Café web pages.
