MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

Life has returned to our campus in joyous and generous ways. I am so happy for the opportunity to meet in person with our Student Government Association (SGA) leaders, faculty, and students to break bread in our newly reopened cafeteria. What a celebration of the first day of classes we had: Lunch was served to one and all from 12-3 p.m. courtesy of the Division of Administration and Finance. SVP Rodríguez-Chardavoyne and her wonderful staff were on hand. The place was resplendent with balloons, banners, and cupcakes decorated to honor the kickoff of our 55th anniversary of the establishment of Eugenio María de Hostos Community College as one of the CUNY sister schools. We recognize the wonderful men and women community leaders on whose shoulders we stand. Outstanding!

Enrollment has seen a resurgence and we are on our way to rebuilding life, education, and a strong student presence on campus. A special thank you to Vice President Yates, Associate Dean Sterling, Assistant Dean Gómez, and our excellent Student Development and Enrollment Management colleagues. As of February 1, 2023, these are our headcount and FTE numbers for Spring 2023 vs. Spring 2022:

Under President Leaghton Ozoria, our SGA leadership has evidenced thoughtful engagement and academic excellence. I am so proud and so grateful for their generous support of classmates and the College.

I wish our dear Hostos family a productive and enjoyable semester.

Mil gracias y bendiciones, Daisy

A POEM TO WELCOME LESSONS LEARNED

In the Lockdown

By Charles Simic

I might’ve gone crazy,

if not for Solitude,

That grand dame

Long accustomed to her fate.

And eager to console me

Down in the dumps

With stories of men and women

Throughout the ages

Who withdrew from the world

And endured years of seclusion

And dark nights of the soul

Before they found inner peace

In some hole in the wall

Mulling over someone’s advice:

“Go sit quietly and your room

Will teach you everything.”

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT LEAGHTON N. OZORIA

I am proud of my school. I have noticed people and staff come together when a necessity comes about. The cafeteria reopened, and we have a perfect computer lab, and clean bathrooms (thanks to our custodial staff for that!). New classes are enriching us in this learning platform. Organizations are taken more seriously and seen as central to internal relationship building. We share responsibilities on issues of monetary assistance. Public safety helps us, and are deserving of praise for that. But most importantly, thank you, President, for letting us prove ourselves as a collective. Great work, SGA!

Dear Students and Colleagues,

It is my hope that your spring semester is off to a great start as you navigate new classes and schedules. Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Welcome Days at Hostos alongside my colleagues and enjoyed meeting many new and returning students. We felt the energy and enthusiasm among us as we helped students become acquainted with the campus and its available resources and encouraged them to partake in the special activities and giveaways offered. Hostos is truly a special place that makes all who study and work here feel at home. As I look toward the continued development of the Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives, I am excited about the new initiatives we will be piloting, as well as the continued progress of the initiatives that were launched last year.

To kick off this semester, I want to inform you of upcoming application deadlines so that you can benefit from these amazing opportunities.

The Families United in Education Program (FUiE) invites all family members currently enrolled at Hostos to join our spring semester cohort. If you are interested in applying or learning more about this program, please contact Ms. Christeen Francis, in the Health and Wellness Office, at [email protected].

The deadline to apply for spring enrollment in Families United in Education is March 31, 2023.

The First Year Experience Welcomes New Students

On Saturday, January 21 the First Year Experience Committee hosted the College’s first in-person post-pandemic New Student Orientation. A healthy turnout of approximately 120 new incoming students graced the campus, eager to start their first semester on the right foot. Students were welcomed by our Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Shiang-Kwei Wang, Vice President of SDEM Dr. La Toro Yates, and SGA President Mr. Leaghton Ozoria. The new students were fully engaged in the information sessions and campus tour, and simply conversing with administrators and staff who were on site to share the wonderful resources Hostos has to offer.

During this same week, close to 100 students also enjoyed a series of virtual events such as Paying for College, Succeed@Hostos, Degree Works, CUNYfirst and Blackboard, and much more. These remote workshops aimed to equip students with the tools and knowledge to prepare them for a successful semester.

A virtual orientation on January 24, 2023, provided an additional opportunity for over 100 students to connect virtually with President Daisy Cocco De Filippis and representatives from our various campus resources.

Thanks to the First Year Experience Committee for planning and organizing these events and new student orientations. This would not have been possible without the commitment of the staff from the academic, administrative, and student development and enrollment management units, as well as the student leaders who participated. Thanks to Public Safety for their diligence in ensuring we had an incident-free event and for facilitating the taking of photo IDs. To the custodial staff, thank you for ensuring we had a well-kept building to host our new students.

Kudos to everyone for supporting and creating a welcoming experience for our students!

Welcome Days Offered Support and Guidance to New and Continuing Students

On the heels of the New Student Orientation provided by First Year Experience (FYE), Welcome Days launched on Wednesday, January 25 and Thursday, January 26. More than 50 volunteers from across the campus welcomed nearly 2,000 students by giving goodie bags, answering questions, and promoting campus engagement. Both Welcome Days were full of activities, including the opening of the cafeteria, raffles, prize giveaways, and pictures with the President. Students were encouraged to connect by visiting the SGA counter and Hostos Academic Learning Center to spin the wheel and win Hostos swag and gift cards.

The tagline of Welcome Days was “You’re Here!” The goal was to help students feel oriented to the college and be assured that the professional community is ready to support them by connecting them to campus services and resources.

We are grateful for the generous support from the Office of the President and the Office of the Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance. Thank you to the Communications Office and the SDEM Design Office for collaborating on this project's branding and visual assets. Thank you to Buildings and Grounds for the unwavering and responsive support for our ongoing requests for help and assistance and Public Safety. Thank you to the Duplicating Office, which was responsive and helpful, and to the Center for Arts and Culture, which willingly helped with this initiative.

Finally, we are very proud and grateful to the campus leaders from offices, programs, and departments who took hours from their busy schedules to help assemble goodie bags and greet students in the building lobbies. We are proud to report that there were representatives from Accessibility Resource Center, ASAP, Athletics and Recreation, Behavioral and Social Sciences Department, Career Services, Children’s Center, College Discovery, Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Counseling, CUNY EDGE, CUNY Start/Math Start, Dental Hygiene, English Department, Family Empowerment Planning, Financial Aid, Grants Office, Health & Wellness Services, Honors Program, Hostos Children’s Center, Information Technology, Physical Education unit, Registrar’s Office, School College Partnerships, Student Government Association, Student Leadership, Transfer Office, Office of Student Life, Office of the President, Office of SVP for Administration and Finance, Office of VP for Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Office of VP for Institutional Advancement, Office of VP and Provost for Academic Affairs, and Office of VP for Student Development and Enrollment Management.

We are so grateful for the time and commitment expressed by everyone. This would not have been possible without the tremendous collaboration across all college divisions.

The Welcome Days Committee included Director Jerry Rosa from Student Activities, Director Lisette Jourdain from the Hostos Academic Learning Center, Director Silvia Reyes from Special Projects and Student Engagement, and Designer Emily Tenzer-Santoro from Student Development and Enrollment Management.

Health & Wellness

CUNY has updated the COVID guidelines for the Spring 2023 semester and they can be viewed on Hostos’ Campus COVID-19 Plan and COVID-19 Readiness websites.

The important highlights include the following:

  • Students who are new and/or returning to campus in the spring are required to be vaccinated. Student participation in on-campus activities will require proof of vaccination. Only medical or religious exemptions will be accepted.

  • Booster shots are strongly encouraged but are not currently required.

  • Face masks are not required on campus at this time. However, individuals are welcome to continue wearing masks.

  • CUNY will continue to require individuals to comply with quarantine/isolation and clearance mandates. If you are experiencing COVID-related symptoms or if you have tested positive for COVID-19, you must contact the following individuals:
  1. Hostos Faculty and Staff must report symptoms and/or test-positive results to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety Marya Shuksta at [email protected] or [email protected]
  2. Students must report the same to Nurse Maria Vasquez at [email protected]

Additionally, effective February 1, 2023:

  • CUNY will no longer require proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID test for visitors. A visitor to a University campus is defined as someone who is not a CUNY student, faculty, or staff member.
  • CUNY will reduce Random Testing from 10% of the on-campus population to 5%. Participation in the random surveillance testing is mandatory, and failure to comply will result in the removal of the individual’s Cleared4 access pass to CUNY spaces.
  • CUNY will no longer require gateway testing for student-athletes.

Financial Aid

Pell/SEOG Book Advance processes started on 1/17 for the Spring of 2023.

  • A total of $879,736.14 has already been disbursed to 1707 students.

Accessibility Resource Center (ARC)

In an effort to streamline and enhance services to our students, ARC met with CUNY Central Information Technology to discuss assistive technology and how CUNY Central can collaborate in making Hostos a model for digital accessibility. We are looking forward to this collaboration.

ARC is currently recruiting students to participate in a day trip to Albany to meet with NYS legislators for Student Empowerment day on February 8, 2023. We have a bus leaving Hostos where Faculty, Students, and Staff will come together to advocate on behalf of the 10,000 students with disabilities in NY.

I am a Black Woman

by Mari Evans

I am a black woman

the music of my song

some sweet arpeggio of tears

is written in a minor key

and I can be heard humming in the night

Can be heard humming in the night

I saw my mate leap screaming to the sea

and I/with these hands/cupped the lifebreath

from my issue in the canebrake

I lost Nat’s swinging body in a rain of tears

and heard my son scream all the way from Anzio

for Peace he never knew….I learned Da Nang and Pork Chop Hill

in anguish

Now my nostrils know the gas and these trigger tire/d fingers

seek the softness in my warrior’s beard

I am a black woman tall as a cypress

strong beyond all definition still

defying place and time and circumstance

assailed

impervious

indestructible

Look on me and be renewed

Some events included live piano music by Hostos students at the A-Atrium on both days, and gift card raffles organized by the Student Government Association (SGA).

On Wednesday, January 25, the Division of Administration and Finance (ADM) launched the 55th anniversary of the College at the cafeteria reopening’s ribbon cutting ceremony. The much-anticipated event was attended by Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Senior Vice President of Administration and Finance Esther Rodríguez-Chardavoyne, SGA President Leaghton Ozoria, the new food vendor’s Chairwoman and CEO Valerie Goldston, leadership from all divisions, and members of the community at large.
