El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, February 14, 2025 | Vol. 10, No. 3

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As the new semester begins to settle in, I hope you are enjoying the enthusiasm a new semester brings as well as the company of our students and one another.

As we navigate challenges, stay focused on the true North — education. It is the door to opportunity for our students, and it is a joy to see their lives transformed because of the work of so many people of goodwill. Thank you for the caring teaching, counseling, and support of our students as we face the difficulties that this historical moment has brought upon us together.

I wish you a wonderful long weekend.  Some of us will be in Albany for the CUNY Luncheon on Saturday, February 15.  Happy Valentine’s Day with your loved ones and friends.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEM

“To Be In Love”

By Gwendolyn Brooks

To be in love

Is to touch with a lighter hand.

In yourself you stretch, you are well.

You look at things

Through his eyes.

A cardinal is red.

A sky is blue.

Suddenly you know he knows too.

He is not there but

You know you are tasting together

The winter, or a light spring weather.

His hand to take your hand is overmuch.

Too much to bear.

You cannot look in his eyes

Because your pulse must not say

What must not be said.

When he

Shuts a door-

Is not there_

Your arms are water.

And you are free

With a ghastly freedom.

You are the beautiful half

Of a golden hurt.

You remember and covet his mouth

To touch, to whisper on.

Oh when to declare

Is certain Death!

Oh when to apprize

Is to mesmerize,

To see fall down, the Column of Gold,

Into the commonest ash.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTINEZ

Do You See the Glitter?

Happy Friday, Hostos! Do you see the glitter in the air? At SGA, we sure do!

We hope everyone had an amazing time at prom yesterday. A big thank-you to the LGBTQIA+ Council and all involved for making it unforgettable! Before the prom, many students stopped by the SGA booth for some Valentine’s Day treats and to learn more about the event.

Remember to check your school email! It’s the best way to stay updated on events, opportunities, and more. If you’re having trouble with your email, visit the Computer Lab in C-595 or IT in B-420 for assistance. Also, don’t miss out on the Navigate 360 app, our new go-to source for campus announcements and updates. Head to your app store and download Navigate 360 today!

Graduation is close! So as always, for those who are graduating, do a check-in with your advisor if you have not done so yet. It is important that you stay informed about your status. The Registrar's Office does this. Please email them at: GRADUATIONAUDIT@hostos.cuny.edu or 718-518-6771.

For those who are transferring, please visit Transfer Services on the first level of the D-Building (D-101) or call them at 718-518-4319.

Another great resource is the food pantry, available by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, contact Madeline Cruz at 718-518-4141 or email: mcruz@hostos.cuny.edu

At the end of the day, everything we do is about making sure no student feels alone, unheard, or unsupported because I know what that feels like. Change isn’t just about policies; it’s about people. And if we keep showing up, speaking up, and lifting each other up, we’ll build something that lasts beyond any one of us. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dainma

Hostos’ Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Two Views

Data are agnostic, and they are never without context.

Our key performance indicators, or KPIs, are the measures used nationally, across CUNY, and at Hostos to evaluate our effectiveness quantitatively. First-year Gateway English and math completion, retention, graduation, and transfer are typically considered. Within CUNY, additional measures include one year of credit accumulation and black/white retention gaps*. Within CUNY, we compare favorably with our community college peers and to national outcomes for public 2-year institutions.

That said, our KPIs were recently evaluated by two very different organizations, which yielded two very different conclusions:

  1. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) issued a Supplemental Information Request (SIR) to nine CUNY institutions, including five community colleges, for Student Achievement (150% or 3-year graduation rate below 23%)** and/or Annual Enrollment (Full-time Equivalent, or FTE, varying more than 15% within a single academic year, which in many cases, including Hostos, was a pandemic-related drop in enrollment). Hostos’ SIR is related to both measures. Our response last year focused on retention supports including First Year Experience and responsive, coordinated course scheduling. This year’s study will do the same in addition to demonstrating that the decrease in enrollment was due to the pandemic and the increase in post-pandemic enrollment gains.

  1. These same KPIs were reviewed by the US Department of Education and approximately 50 external evaluators. The result? Hostos was one of six winners of the Postsecondary Success Recognition Program (three community colleges, three primarily bachelor-granting institutions). In addition to the quantitative data, evaluators looked at qualitative data (gleaned from interviews and the application). They considered where we are situated, who we serve, how our student outcomes exceed national rates for underrepresented minorities, and how Hostos prioritizes student support over all else (including budgeting/resource management). Also, the evaluators recognized the value of a Hostos degree. At the same time, over 70% of students transfer to four-year colleges within two years; an associate degree holder earns 1.4 times as an individual with a high school diploma. Compared to last year, spring enrollment of continuing students is up 7%.

Neither MSCHE nor USDOE is wrong. However, whereas one considers only a numeric benchmark, which is itself a context, the other looks at the data (KPIs) in light of socio/political/geographic situation and, in doing so, recognizes our institutional effectiveness.

*Because we have a small and often statistically insignificant white student population, Hostos typically explores intersectional identities (nothing complicated), including gender/race or ethnicity, to identify and measure outcomes gaps beyond black/white and male/female. This helps the College (faculty, staff, and leadership) identify opportunities to design communication, outreach, and resources to address these equity gaps.

**Hostos’ 150% or 3-year graduation rates: Fa19 =20.4%, Fa20 cohort = 16.8%.

Hostos Business Department Partners with the Baruch Business Academy

As an outcome of conversations with Baruch faculty during the Fall 2023 Business Industry Summit hosted by the President’s Office and supported by the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Assistant Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Babette Audant and Unit Coordinator for the Business Department Dr. AJ Stachelek led the collaboration and resulting partnership of Hostos with Baruch and its Business Academy. In January 2025, Hostos signed a joint dual degree articulation with the Baruch Business Academy. Thanks to strong advocacy for designing the articulation by Hostos Business Chair Professor William Baker and support from the Business Department faculty, the required course and degree map revisions were undertaken in AY 2023-24. The resulting articulation requires that students complete the required seven courses by their twenty-fourth credit and maintain a minimum overall 2.5 GPA. Students who complete the pre-requisites later in their progression toward the degree will still be strongly positioned for transfer to Baruch's Zicklin School of Business. This is Hostos' ninth joint dual degree, and it will be presented at the College-wide Curriculum Committee and Senate as an informational item early in the Spring 2025 semester.  Benefits of this partnership for Hostos students include seamless admission to Baruch College and the Zicklin School of Business and priority registration upon matriculation at Baruch.

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“Don’t Quit”

By Edgar Guest

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

when the funds are low and the debts are high,

and you want to smile but you have to sigh,

when care is pressing you down a bit – rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns.

As everyone of us sometimes learns.

And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out.

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow – you may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man;

Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor’s cup;

and he learned too late when the night came down,

how close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out – the silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

and when you never can tell how close you are,

it may be near when it seems afar;

so stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit – it’s when things seem worst, you must not quit

FY 2026 State Executive and City Preliminary Budget Summary

In mid-January, Governor Hochul presented the FY 2026 New York State Executive Budget and Mayor Adams released the NYC FY 2026 Preliminary Budget.

Some of the key highlights of the NYS Executive Budget that pertain to CUNY community colleges include:

  • Maintaining a 100% funding floor for community colleges is critical to avoiding a reduction in funding for the College.
  • $5.3 million in additional general operating support is continued.
  • Part-Time TAP has been expanded to students taking at least three credits per semester, down from six.

The City’s Preliminary Budget includes:

  • $11.2 million for classified staff contract ongoing collective bargaining salary increases.
  • $13.8 million for classified staff contract ratification bonuses and collective bargaining wage increases. (In the FY2025 budget, the City had provided $13.8 million for classified staff contract ratification bonuses and collective bargaining salary increases, and $2.5 million for trades titles collective bargaining increases.)
  • $15 million of operating support for community colleges is not continued. The Program to Eliminate the Gap (PEG) total is $95.5 million.

The Preliminary Budget has eliminated or reduced funding for multiple CUNY initiatives, but it is too early to tell what cuts may be restored in the Adopted Budget.

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT (CEWD)

CEWD Employer Spotlight: Towne Nursing Staff Inc.

Since 2017, the Hostos Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) has had the pleasure of collaborating with Towne Nursing Staff Inc. to help place hundreds of our Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) graduates in jobs. Established in 1991, Towne Nursing aims to deliver “excellent and professional staff to nursing homes and long-term care facilities in need.” Ben Leifer, the Director of Customer Relations for Towne Nursing, has personally worked with Hostos CEWD to hire CNAs since 2018. He has seen many Hostos CEWD graduates become part of fulfilling the company’s mission to enhance the quality of life for residents at the facilities they partner with.

Ben highly recommends Hostos CEWD as a training provider. “Where Hostos stands out in my mind versus other programs is the time they take to develop soft skills in students,” he said. “The teachers and the curriculum are amazing in preparing people, not just as a CNA, but as an employee in the workforce.” He spoke highly of Hostos CEWD as a partner and hopes to continue fostering this relationship in the future.
