MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

We are moving forward, making steady progress in multiple ways. The good news this week is that census numbers indicate that our enrollments are up 6.7%, exceeding our 5% target. This is great to hear, as we are encouraged to double our efforts to retain even higher numbers and to work with our students. Please stay in touch and learn from our students about the support they need to continue a journey that is about social justice and bright futures, and to support their persistence.

Please continue to work with our students to ensure their success. Provide guidance about our multiple support offices and confirm that tutoring is regularly provided as needed.

I wish you continued joy, hope and satisfaction in this semester’s journey of teaching and learning, advising and guidance of our deserving students.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

POEM

"The Negro Speaks of Rivers"

By Langston Hughes

I’ve known rivers:

I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.

I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.

I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.

I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom

turn all golden in the sunset.

I’ve known rivers:

Ancient, dusky rivers.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

New NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Cohort

The new NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program cohort has been selected. Congratulations to Deneisha Noble and Anjanet Thomas, who will begin their academic journey this spring to fulfill their dreams of becoming public health professionals. Both students have strong academic backgrounds, high levels of integrity and perseverance, and are deeply committed to advancing public health efforts that will make a difference in promoting the health and well-being of underserved communities. In Fall 2025, they will transfer to the Columbia University School of General Studies where they will join our current cohort of students that are enrolled there. This is a well-deserved achievement for both our students.

Retention, Graduation and the Power of Student Persistence

Nationally, the three-year, or 150%, graduation rate measures community college success. For the cohort of first-time freshmen who enrolled at Hostos in Fall 2019, the three-year graduation rate is 20.4%. Across CUNY community colleges, the three-year graduation rate for the Fall 2019 cohort is 25.2%, and nationally, it was approximately 30% at two-year public institutions, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Hostos’ three-year graduation rate includes 8.4% of students in the Fall 2019 cohort who graduated in two years or a 100% rate. From this perspective, we have room for improvement compared to our CUNY community college peers and nationally.

We also know that Hostos students often interrupt their education due to financial pressures and other obstacles to completion, and even our four-year, or 200%, graduation rate is still behind that of CUNY community colleges (again for the Fall 2019 cohort): CC average is 35.8%, Hostos is 26.3%. This is not surprising because many of our degrees have average times to degree (or TTD) longer than four years (including Nursing AAS and Engineering AS degrees). So, we looked at eight-year graduation rates, prompted by the USDOE Postsecondary Success Recognition Program’s citation of our 52% eight-year graduation rate for first-time, full-time freshmen (which in the USDOE’s case included graduates of other colleges), and Hostos has had stronger outcomes than our CUNY community college peers. A comparison of five-year graduation rates showed a similar pattern.

The five-year and eight-year graduation rates of first-time full-time + part-time freshmen who started at and graduated from Hostos, compared to the average five-year and eight-year graduation rates for first-time full-time + part-time freshmen at CUNY’s community colleges, demonstrates something about Hostos students’ persistence and perseverance, and of our ability to provide sustained support to our students. For the cohort of first-time full-time + part-time freshmen who started in Fall 2015:

Fall 2015 first-time full-time + part-time freshmen

CUNY Community College Average 5-year graduation rate (250% rate)*

Hostos 5-year graduation rate (250% rate)

What does this mean? The data indicate not just deferred educational goals but deferred completion. It helps to explain why less than 15% of Hostos graduates complete a bachelor’s degree in six years, even though more than 70% of graduates transfer to baccalaureate granting institutions. It means we’re effective — more effective – than our CUNY peer institutions in serving students who take alternative paths to completion. It means it’s on us to keep in touch, to (continue to) use the technologies we have, and to keep a line of communication open during the year or two or more when students may stop out or sustain their enrollment at three credits a semester. It also means students don’t give up on their aspirations; they stick to the long game and don’t give up on Hostos. And it is a clear call to us to continue developing strategies to accelerate time to degree by one or more semesters for students who need degrees to achieve socio-economic mobility.

Admissions and Recruitment

Non-Degree Application Configuration

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment is making significant strides in configuring a new online non-degree application designed to modernize and streamline enrollment. Inspired by the CUNY freshman and transfer online application, this new application will replace the outdated paper version. It will allow students to seamlessly apply, submit their academic records, and request courses of interest for non-degree study within a user-friendly platform.

The office aims to eliminate common barriers associated with paper applications, such as mailing delays and manual processing errors, by moving to an online system. This transition is expected to make the enrollment process more efficient and accessible, particularly for students who may have previously faced application challenges. The online application will provide a smoother, more intuitive experience, ensuring that all students can easily navigate the process and pursue their educational goals regardless of their background or location. This initiative underscores the office's commitment to enhancing accessibility and supporting the diverse needs of our student population.

Caiman Direct

Caiman Direct at Hostos Community College, operated by the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, provides a valuable virtual platform for prospective and current students. Through Zoom, students can easily connect with an admissions advisor to inquire about the CUNY application process, seek guidance on readmitting to Hostos after a brief break, or address any other enrollment-centered questions.

This fall, the Office is excited to expand Caiman Direct's services to include other SDEM units, further enhancing student support and resources. This initiative underscores Hostos Community College's commitment to accessibility and student success, ensuring that all students have the tools to navigate their educational journey effectively. The Hostos community can access the Caiman Direct Virtual Office. Go here for more information.

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“I Dream A World”

By Langston Hughes

I dream a world where man

No other man will scorn,

Where love will bless the earth

And peace its paths adorn

I dream a world where all

Will know sweet freedom's way,

Where greed no longer saps the soul

Nor avarice blights our day.

A world I dream where black or white,

Whatever race you be,

Will share the bounties of the earth

And every man is free,

Where wretchedness will hang its head

And joy, like a pearl,

Attends the needs of all mankind-

Of such I dream, my world!

Prepare for Upcoming Purchase Requisition Deadlines

While we are only mid-February, please remember that the deadline for submitting purchase requisitions will be before we know it. In the last fiscal year, the deadline to submit fully-approved and valid budget-checked Non-Marketplace Purchase Requisitions in CUNYBuy was in early April. If you are aware of upcoming purchases that need quotes or other preparatory action, act on them sooner rather than later. Those deadlines arrive faster than we expect.

As another reminder, equipment, furniture, or other items that cannot be delivered or rendered by June 30, 2025, cannot be charged to the FY 2024-2025 budget, per the City of New York and CUNY’s procurement regulations. Please check and confirm with your suppliers that all goods and services will be delivered by June 30, 2025, before submitting your requisition in the system. Additionally, once goods/services are received, departments must submit their Receiving Reports in a timely manner to facilitate payments to vendors. All invoices received must be forwarded to the Accounts Payable Office immediately for processing.

New Endowed Scholarship from Former Hostos leader Dolly Martínez

Dolly Martínez may serve at the highest levels of CUNY leadership as the Chief of Staff to Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and Associate Vice Chancellor for the Executive Office. Still, she has never forgotten her Hostos roots.
