MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Hostos Family,

I am happy to share my remarks from our All-College Meeting. I wish you a beautiful semester.

All-College Meeting

February 6, 2025

Welcome Remarks

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As we gather, once again, as one Hostos family, as I have done at every college meeting since November 6, let me affirm our commitment to respect, diversity, inclusivity and caring for one another. Those from all backgrounds, faiths, and religions are welcome and embraced and included in loving and respectful ways; that is Hostos.

I am asking colleagues and students to connect any student experiencing anxiety asap with IVP Sterling, Dean Gómez and the Counseling Center in order to discuss concerns. I note communications from last week providing multiple points of contact. We have also created posters of the Red Cards, and they are on display at the five lobbies, my office and multiple other locations. Let me assure you all that everything in our power to support our students is being put in place and will be put in place as needs evolve. For those concerned about ICE raids, the College is required only to respond to a Court Order for anyone at the College, administration, faculty, staff and students, documented or undocumented, who has broken the law. Credentials and warrants will be reviewed by either Chief Bernabe or Counsel Sohn. We don’t anticipate “search expeditions” and the College has no lists of undocumented or DACA students.

Let us now rejoice in an afternoon of sharing. It is powerful to gather at the beginning of a semester of significant challenges and achievements. As we prepared to begin this semester we received a powerful acknowledgment of our collective work on behalf of our students in the announcement by the U.S., Department of Education that Hostos Community College, a CUNY school in the South Bronx, is a winner of the inaugural Postsecondary Success Recognition Program (PSRP) award. The College is one of only six institutions chosen from hundreds of eligible colleges throughout the country to receive this recognition. According to Nasser Paydar, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education, Hostos was selected because its work “is a shining example of the transformative power of higher education, especially for underserved students.”

As always, this academic year we continued to reach out and to keep the college community informed, as we have done since Fall 2020 in the Hostos Weekly/Semanario Hostosiano’s entries about our collective work; work so many of us have shared. Thank you for continuing to work hard to find solutions to challenging situations, from the physical space to teaching effectiveness, successful retention of our students in our classrooms, and academic support strategies, to supporting morale by means of multiple activities outside of the classroom, and by so many activities that maintain a robust intellectual life. This work has been supported as well by those on the ground, our generous maintainers and custodians and Public Safety colleagues. Thank you, mil gracias, does not begin to express the gratitude and the pride I feel.

We celebrate this afternoon the beginning of the second semester of academic year 2024-25, a year that saw us overcome and continue to persevere despite challenges, and the award of a $1,000,000 earmark from our U.S. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand in support of the Hostos Research Center and the Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus initiative, the Lorenzo-Wright $1,000,000 endowed scholarship for STEM students, the Potack $500,000 endowed scholarship for Allied Health and Nursing students, a number of NSF grants, including the HEAT program’s support of  $2,000,000.  Academic Affairs implemented multiple support activities supported by a $2.5 million Title V grant, and so much more. Given the present political climate, we have begun to experience uncertainty about federal grants. PI’s received a communication from me with details about how we can support moving forward.

Enrollment continued to grow this semester with a more than 5% increase in FTEs, supported by an increase in our retention numbers. Thank you to our Academic Chairs, faculty and colleagues in SDEM for their continued encouragement of early registration, and please continue to create new efforts and strategies. Our retention gains represent a major focus as we build on our innovations in developmental education, Gateway courses, cohort offerings and advisement investments. I observed with gratitude and appreciation at a recent retreat of the Executive Cabinet, how collegiality and collaboration define our team. Mil gracias. As a result of one of many discussions about maximizing support of our students, a joint decision was made to move the Coaching Unit to work directly with Academic Affairs. You will hear more on this from our Provost.

The generous support and diligence of the Hostos Advisory Corps for the MacKenzie Scott Gif President’s Initiatives have brought life to research, transfer programs and multiple activities at Hostos. We celebrate powerful results in engagement and participation in initiatives that go from Families United in Education, Hostos Research Center’s innovations, Workforce initiatives in non-credit to credit opportunities, Educating for Diversity programming, Next-Gen Public Health Scholars and other 2 + 2 +2 transfer opportunities, Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus and Scholarships Now supported last year by a congressional earmark championed by Congressman Richie Torres. Our CEWD area is to be congratulated for the acquisition of significant grants and the growth of their non-credit enrollments and the non-credit to credit strategies in collaboration with Academic Affairs, making progress on their academic planning document. Administration continues to keep us in the black, and supports new initiatives such as the inauguration of a new Women’s Center last December. SGA President Martínez has been outstanding in her support of kindness on campus. Her collaboration on so many activities is commendable. As always, we stay focused, we stay the course on our students’ success and remain vigilant about next budgetary steps.

I know you heard me say this before but it is worth repeating that my particular passion, a passion I share with many colleagues at Hostos, is giving students the opportunity to pursue a liberal arts foundation while also articulating career pathways that lead to jobs and careers that help our students earn a good living.

Academic Affairs has been exemplary in course planning, working hand in hand with Chairs and colleagues in SDEM and Administration in scheduling classes that support the needs of our students and the growth of academic programs. Bravi, and please continue to focus on scheduling that enhances programs’ completion.

A special thank you to all of our colleagues presenting this afternoon, and our kind student leader and College Senate leader. Thank you to the members of the President’s Office, our Cabinet, our students, our faculty and administration colleagues. As always, I close my remarks by reflecting on Pablo Neruda’s Nobel Laureate speech: his understanding of the connection we have with others and the responsibility we have to one another, as we try to move forward as human beings in this life’s journey.  Here is a brief excerpt from Neruda’s  speech, words some of you have heard me read many times before:

All paths lead to the same goal; to convey to others what we are…

but in this dance or in this song, there are fulfilled the most ancient

rites of our conscience in the awareness of being human and of

believing in a common destiny.

I wish us all a rewarding new semester. I know that Commencement this coming May will find us rejoicing in the rewards of our labors, as we celebrate our wonderful students’ persistence and diligence.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

POEM

“The Sparrow”

By Paul Laurence Dunbar

A little bird, with plumage brown,

Beside my window flutters down,

A moment chirps its little strain,

Ten taps upon my window–pane,

And chirps again, and hops along,

To call my notice to its song;

But I work on, nor heed its lay,

Till, in neglect, it flies away.

So birds of peace and hope and love

Come fluttering earthward from above,

To settle on life’s window–sills,

And ease our load of earthly ills;

But we, in traffic’s rush and din

Too deep engaged to let them in,

With deadened heart and sense plod on,

Nor know our loss till they are gone.

This poem is in the public domain.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTINEZ

We’re Doing It!

Happy Friday, Hostos! Another week is over. As many of us continue onward with the new semester, remember the major thing we all should do: check our school emails! If you are having issues with your email you may go to the Computer Lab in C-595, or IT in B-420. From your emails you are able to keep updated on events, opportunities, and more. The greatest thing that we have on deck now is the Navigate 360 app. It is our new source of announcements and keeping informed of what's happening on campus and what’s up with your progress as a student. So head on over to the app store and download it now!

As we are in times of uncertainty and overall overwhelming feelings, remember that Hostos is here for you. We are here for you. So please do not ever feel the need to stay quiet or stay alone. There is always someone here on campus to assist. For instance, the SGA is a resource for you! If you need more resources or information about everything happening or just simply need someone to speak with, stop by the Counseling Center at C-330. You may email them at infocounseling@hostos.cuny.edu. You may also make an appointment online. For keeping up with more information follow us on Instagram

Graduation is close! So as always, for those who are graduating, do a check-in with your advisor if you have not done so yet. It is important that you stay informed about your status. The Registrar's Office does this. Please email them at: GRADUATIONAUDIT@hostos.cuny.edu or 718-518-6771.

For those who are transferring, please visit Transfer Services on the first level of the D-Building (D-101) or call them at 718-518-4319.

Another great resource is the food pantry, available by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, contact Madeline Cruz at 718-518-4141 or email: mcruz@hostos.cuny.edu

As the days go by, I always like to share a few words of encouragement. Do not lose yourself in the sea of worry. Remember that we are all here to grow, to strive, and to achieve our goals. Keep moving forward. I’d like to close with a motto that I frequently use “We are all trees, and we are meant to grow.” Our branches do not interfere with each other but rather grow around and with one another. Stay strong, support each other, and embrace the journey ahead. Enjoy the weekend and smile with the sun!

Sincerely,

Dainma Martinez

Mid-year Progress on Strategic Goals: Mission-focused Coordination and Capacity-building

The 2024-2025 operational plan, reflective of the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan and our Mission, is focused on advancing employment-related justice for students from their first day with us through graduation. This emphasis reflects our commitment to post-college outcomes and underscores the urgency and context to our unique student success imperative: Hostos students pursue higher education to build better futures for themselves and their families. Falling short in retaining students, supporting timely completion, or offering degrees that lead to living-wage careers means falling short of our mission.

We have identified five institution-wide “umbrella” priorities to help us focus and frame our efforts:

  1. Enrollment
  2. Advisement
  3. A comprehensive First-Year Experience (FYE)
  4. Career/transfer
  5. Other enhanced retention supports

These areas — all of which align with goals and strategies of our strategic plan and our six mission focus — serve as the foundation for divisional activities aimed at fostering a more integrated and cohesive experience for all students. Together, this comprehensive strategy acts as our collective “north star,” providing clear direction and alignment for the entire College. The work, then, has involved specific initiatives (i.e. systematic coordination of course/section needs by advisors, faculty and OAA; accelerated processing of Federal Work Study eligibility and employment/placement) and strategies (i.e. expansion of Credit for Prior Learning articulations; professional development for faculty teaching First Year Seminar). It’s also invited creative responses to better serve students (i.e. Transfer Service Office’s satellite hours in the Business Department Office; multi-modal outreach to first year students by First Year peer mentors). While progress is being tracked by quantitative measures, much of this work has been the building of interstitial tissue: systems and processes that result in lasting, if often invisible, institutional change.

New York City Landlords Required to Provide Heat and Hot Water from Now through May 31

This week’s update comes from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) about heat and hot water laws in the cold months.

For HPD (non-NYCHA residents)

By law, New York City has an eight-month-long “heat season” from October 1 to May 31 during which all residential building owners are required to maintain indoor temperatures at 68 degrees when outdoor temperatures fall below 55 degrees during the day. Indoor temperatures must also be a minimum of 62 degrees overnight, regardless of outdoor temperatures. Building owners are legally required to provide hot water at 120 degrees year-round.

If an apartment lacks appropriate heat and/or hot water, tenants should first attempt to notify the building owner, managing agent or superintendent. If service is not restored, the tenant should register an official complaint by calling 311 or downloading and using the 311-mobile app. Hearing-impaired tenants can register complaints via a Touch Tone Device for the Deaf (TDD) at 212-504-4115. Be sure to write down and keep your 311-complaint number.

HPD responds to heat and hot water complaints as quickly as possible. Tenants can monitor HPD Online to learn the result of the complaint. If a landlord fails to provide heat entirely, HPD’s Emergency Repair Program or Housing Litigation Division will intervene to seek the restoration of heat. Multiple complaints from a particular building are often the result of one condition in need of repair.

Low-income property owners having trouble maintaining heat in their homes should visit the website of the Home Energy Assistance Program. Eligible households can qualify for assistance paying heating bills or repairing heating equipment.

For NYCHA Residents

NYCHA residents follow a different procedure. Residents experiencing issues with heat or hot water should call the NYCHA Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or report the issue via the MyNYCHA mobile app or web version. They should also contact NYCHA when:

  • The apartment temperature is out of range.
  • They have hot pipes and cold radiators.
  • A window is not closing properly.
  • Steam is leaking into the apartment.
  • The building’s front entrance door does not fully close.

View this NYCHA Journal entry for a list of helpful tips to keep apartments warm during the winter season.

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“The Joy of Forgiveness”

By Susan T. Aparejo

The joy of forgiveness

lightens one’s burden,

It showers happiness,

Showers our heart with

blessedness, so we wake up

in a lighter mood of wellness.

Just try, unload your baggage,

Throw away such garbage,

Let our heart fly and set a voyage,

Feel free to take out such bondage,

And stop our physique from its wreckage.

The joy of forgiveness is the key,

To live on earth peacefully,

And wake up the morning readily,

A fresh air dominates comfortably,

So sweet a conscience of harmony.

I forgive you and you forgive me,

Another flow of peace release,

Another love and acceptance dominate,

Let the trust once again surface,

As we give each other a chance,

We mean forgiveness at hand.

IT Helps Welcome New Students at FYE Events

The Information Technology Department was pleased to play an integral role in the First Year Experience events held on Saturday, January 18 and Wednesday, January 22. During Saturday’s orientation event, created by the FYE Committee and led by the committee co-chairs, IT staffed a table in the A-Atrium to showcase the various technical support services available to students. IT staff assisted new students in claiming their email addresses and provided guidance on important IT topics.

At the Wednesday event “Ready for the First Day,” led by Sarah Brennan and supported by the Office of Academic Affairs, IT conducted classroom presentations across each of the five sessions held that day, with approximately 25 students attending each session. Before the end of each session, IT ensured that students had access to their emails and systems. The goal at both events was to familiarize new students with the various systems and resources available at Hostos and CUNY, creating an overall smooth onboarding experience with the College’s technology and IT department. The focus included:

  • Understanding the services available through Hostos and CUNY accounts.

  • Learning how to look up their Hostos email information.

  • Accessing and logging into the Hostos Single Sign On (SSO).

  • Knowing how to reach IT for technical assistance.

  • Providing physical bookmarks with QR codes for quick access IT resources pages.

  • Ensuring new student data was preloaded into the college’s ID system to facilitate an efficient and swift ID Card printing process.

CEWD Student Spotlight

R., a justice-involved father, knew that earning his General Equivalency Diploma (GED) was the first step toward creating a better future for himself and his family. R. enrolled in the CEWD’s CUNY Fatherhood Academy (CFA). CFA is a free program that provides fathers, ages 18-30, with GED preparation classes, college and career readiness courses, parenting seminars, tutoring, and counseling.

The support and encouragement R. received from instructors and program staff were instrumental in helping him stay focused, even when faced with setbacks. One of the most difficult moments in his journey was missing a scheduled GED test due to restrictions imposed by his probation officer. R. refused to let this temporary setback derail his progress. He persevered, balancing community service, probation, house arrest, and numerous court visits while completing the CFA program.

R. was able to successfully earn his GED in just 16 weeks. Now that he has his GED, R. is setting his sights on the future. He hopes to attend college and is considering pursuing a degree in business.
