El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, March 1, 2024 | Vol. 8, No. 6

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

The air is already fresher, bringing some warmth and many ideas to our college community as we close a week that saw significant engagement on intersectionality and Latinos, Black at Hostos discussion on race and higher education, and a joyous ribbon cutting to mark the opening, albeit belatedly because of the weather, of the Student Advisement Center at 429 Grand Concourse.

As we move forward together in support of the community, please participate as much as your schedule permits in the rich array of diversity at Hostos, from the performances at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture, or reading the latest issue of the Hostos WAC Reader on Queer Pedagogy, or consider the article discussed at our Committee on Sponsored Programs and Grants “Employing Multilevel Intersectionality in Educational Research: Latino Identities, Contexts, and College Access” or pick up a copy of Sonora Jha’s “The Laughter” one of the featured book presentation speakers at Hostos last fall.

The census numbers were shared last Semanario, and we are growing steadily, but as the poet says, “we have miles to go before we sleep…” The efforts are gargantuan, we all know, but the rewards are immense. Mil gracias for all you do.

With appreciation,

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

A POEM

“Wisdom”

By Makeda, Queen of Sheba (ca. 1000 B.C.)

Wisdom is

sweeter than honey,

brings more joy

than wine,

illumines

more than the sun,

is more precious

than jewels.

She causes

the ears to hear

and the heart to comprehend.

I love her

like a mother,

and she embraces me

as her own child.

I will follow

her footprints

and she will not cast me away.

We're thrilled to continue with a new series of workshops this spring. Mid-Year 2023-24 Operational Plan Progress

This year’s operational plan is the first implementation plan informed by “Hostos: Elevating Justice, Our Strategic Plan 2023-2028.”

The 2023-24 operational plan executive summary highlighted ten important college-wide priorities for 2023-2024 — areas of action where we will build infrastructure to make a measurable difference in students’ lives. These include:

1. An integrated first-year experience (Goal 1, Strategy 1) - Research Brief 2/2024

2. Mandatory advisement (Goal 1, Strategy 2)

3. Maximized financial aid accessibility and access (Goal 1, Strategy 4)

4. Support for more equitable tenure and promotion for faculty and staff (Goal 2, Strategy 2)

5. Strengthened inclusion, belonging, and equity of experience for students experiencing inequitable outcomes (Goal 2, Strategy 5)

6. Enhanced Gateway English and Math experience (Goal 3, Strategy 1) - Research Brief 2/2024

7. Strengthened support for Liberal Arts degrees and options (Goal 4, Strategy 2)

8. Tech and foreign language competencies across majors (Goal 4, Strategy 4)

9. Expanded student experiential learning, career exploration, and job placement supports (Goal 4, Strategy 3; Goal 4, Strategy 1; Goal 6, Strategy 1)

10. Increased college pathways and credits that count toward majors upon transfer (Goal 5, Strategy 2)

Progress towards the activities included in the 2023-24 operational plan is tracked in several ways:

  • Mid-Year Progress Updates: In January, Hostos divisional leaders and the units within each division documented progress in brief, narrative format in the College-wide operational plan template that serves as a detailed document of annual college-wide effort towards strategic goals. An exception is the Office of Academic Affairs that tracks mid-year progress on the fully aligned Academic Implementation Plan (AIP); final OAA operational plan results will be documented on the college-wide operational plan template. Details are found in the full OP mid-year progress report.

  • Research Briefs: OIERA supports tracking of the Strategic Progress Indicators (SPIs) and is systematically defining how each SPI will be operationalized. Research briefs provide an opportunity to dig deeper into analyses of SPIs: The two bolded priorities above (Goal 1, Strategy 1 and Goal 3, Strategy 1) are the subjects of research briefs drafted by OIERA to provide a more detailed and actionable view of these SP Strategies. The first brief focuses on student participation in First Year Experience. Comprised of data about Fall 2023 FYE participation, the brief will be updated at the end of 2023-24 with Spring 2024 participation data and submitted as part of the final 2023-24 operational plan report. Links to both research briefs will be shared in next week’s El Semanario

The second research brief focuses on the Fall 2022 First Time Freshmen Gateway attempt and completion rates and will be repeated with subsequent Fall cohorts of FTF. Already, a report has been created that provided leaders in SDEM and OAA with a list of Fall 2023 FTF who did not attempt, withdrew, or did not complete Gateway courses. This analysis will be repeated each semester to inform a targeted communication campaign by SDEM.

  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): KPIs represent indicators of progress toward the collective activities of this plan. These are largely pulled from the CUNY Performance Management Process (PMP). KPIs are tracked annually. OIERA is working with the Communications Office to design a KPI public dashboard. Beginning in Spring 24, OIERA will build dashboards on Tableau to support the analysis of KPIs.

Women’s History Month

Dear Hostos Community,

As we usher in the month of March, we also embrace the celebration of Women’s History Month. It is a time for us to reflect upon and honor the invaluable contributions of women throughout American history. From leaders and activists to educators and artists, women have played a critical and vital role in shaping the fabric of our society.  Despite facing adversity and discrimination, women have enriched every aspect of our lives through their achievements, resilience, and determination. This month, let us take the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the exceptional women who paved the way for progress and equality. Let us also acknowledge the ongoing struggle for gender equity and continue to advocate for a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Warm regards,

Phil Oliveri

Hostos Community and Careers Update

Submitted by Lisanette Rosario, Director of Career Services

As we progress through this semester, I'm excited to see our Hostos community thriving, especially through the enriching experiences provided by our Career Services Office in collaboration with our campus colleagues and student leaders.

This week, we celebrate the achievements of our students and alumni, who, with the guidance of Career Services, have taken significant strides in their professional journeys. Recently, we've had some noteworthy achievements. Richard Beard joining Hostos IT and Laura Cuevas taking on a full-time role as CUNY CARES Campus Supervisor showcase the effective collaboration between our staff and students, embodying the spirit of Manos a la Obra. These students have achieved significant career milestones while remaining dedicated to serving Hostos and the broader CUNY community.

Moreover, the engagement of our community in events such as the Love Your Careers event, the NAICA Hiring Hall, and the FYS workshop has confirmed and accentuated the observations of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and CUNY’s own Chancellor in December’s Special Board Meeting (12:54-13:09), reaffirming the importance of career services in retention, equitable development, and student success.

I am particularly heartened by the story of our alumnus, Mahamadou Touray, whose recent hiring at East Side House Settlement (ESHS) as a Teacher Assistant exemplifies the transformative power of education and student services at Hostos. Mahamadou noted about his experience, “[It is a] very nice company with good benefits, and I am happy to have gotten a job there.” His resume, cover letter, thank you letter, and interview skills were developed through his time with Career Services and academic internship. His success highlights the effectiveness of our career support services, interdepartmental collaboration, and events such as the Career Expo, where ESHS will share additional employment opportunities for Hostos students and alumni.

POEMS TO INSPIRE OUR COMMUNITY

“won’t you celebrate with me”

By Lucille Clifton

 won’t you celebrate with me

what i have shaped into

a kind of life? i had no model.

born in babylon

both nonwhite and woman

what did i see to be except myself?

i made it up

here on this bridge between

starshine and clay,

my one hand holding tight

my other hand; come celebrate

with me that everyday

something has tried to kill me

and has failed.

Guide for Work Order Requests

With March now upon us, spring is right around the corner, bringing multiple celebratory events. Many, if not all, will require our amazing Facilities and Custodial staff. Below is a guide to requesting facilities services.

  • For emergency situations, please call Public Safety (x6888) or 911.
  • For immediate or urgent needs, please call the relevant extension only to report the following conditions or needs; do not create a work order!

  • Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (x4190)
  • Unusual Odors or Malodors (x4190, x4349, or x6888)
  • Leaks, Floods or Spills (x4488, x6888)
  • Bathroom Supplies (x4488)
  • Electrical Outage (x4488)
  • Health and Safety Concerns (x4349)
  • Exterminator Requests (x4488)

  • For Non-Urgent Work Order Requests, there are designated individuals in each division or department who are authorized to submit a Facilities work order request. Please speak with the respective designated individual in your division/dept regarding the submission of your service need.

  • All non-emergency requests for service must be submitted through the work order system. Use the Facilities Work Order System to request non-urgent repair, cleaning, and maintenance tasks such as light bulb replacement, moving furniture, installation of shelving, painting, or floor restoration. The work order system organizes tasks for each member of the Campus Operations staff, so please do not make service requests to individual members of the engineering, maintenance, or custodial staff.

Please note that Campus Operations does not provide furniture assembly services; assembly services must be procured from the furniture vendor.

Campus Operations is more than happy to help the College community. Please do your best to provide advance notice so they can provide you with the best service possible.
