MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | |
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
As I reflect on our work this academic year, I rejoice in the progress made by about 80 colleagues serving in working groups that are drafting our 2023–2028 Strategic Plan. We are coming close to the completion of the first draft. Working groups’ co-chairs have brought their recommendations for discussion to the Steering Committee. This document encapsulates so much of what we are at Hostos as an academic community of purpose, caring for our students and each other, and the communities we serve. I take the liberty to share one of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles as defined by working group 2:
“Justice is the act of dismantling barriers to resources and equal opportunities in society so that all individuals and communities can lead a full and dignified life. At educational institutions, this means eliminating structural barriers to students, faculty, and staff development. Eugenio María de Hostos said, 'if you want to know what justice is, let injustice pursue you.' At Hostos, we challenge ourselves to question our institutional practices and systemic structures that inhibit full access to justice for all. We fight to ensure those most pursued by injustice have a fair opportunity to achieve success in higher education and beyond.
We take this definition to heart at Hostos in all that we do: ensuring that our programs and curricula allow for our students to transfer; practicing teaching and learning methodologies that encourage retention and completion; celebrating and integrating into our courses and advisement practices and service an understanding that all are to be respected by the way we facilitate removal of barriers, and a just opportunity to advance.”
Thank you for all you do. I look forward to seeing you at the town hall discussions of the Strategic Plan draft taking place in person and virtually during the last week of March.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

“Eagle Poem”
By Joy Harjo
To pray you open your whole self
To sky, to earth, to sun, to moon
To one whole voice that is you.
And know there is more
That you can’t see, can’t hear;
Can’t know except in moments
Steadily growing, and in languages
That aren’t always sound but other
Circles of motion.
Like eagle that Sunday morning
Over Salt River. Circled in blue sky
In wind, swept our hearts clean
With sacred wings.
We see you, see ourselves and know
That we must take the utmost care
And kindness in all things.
Breathe in, knowing we are made of
All this, and breathe, knowing
We are truly blessed because we
Were born, and die soon within a
True circle of motion,
Like eagle rounding out the morning
Inside us.
We pray that it will be done
In beauty.
In beauty.

Important Announcements
Dear Students and Colleagues,
I hope that your semester is progressing well as we start the month of March with spring only a few weeks away. I am delighted to share that Hostos is initiating a Campus Climate Initiative with the support of a CUNY Transformation grant, which is designed to foster the continued development of a supportive and inclusive campus that promotes a greater sense of belonging for all Hostos community members. The Office of the President, in collaboration with the Office of Compliance and Diversity, will be holding a number of events and learning opportunities this semester that I encourage you to attend for your enrichment and to support the continued growth of our collaborative learning community.
Our first event is the Hostos Interfaith Symposium and Luncheon, a special event that aims to bring the Hostos community together to share and learn about the different forms of faith/spiritual expression in our community and how faith/spirituality can help to support us in times of difficulty. The event will present local faith leaders that will discuss how we can all come together to build a stronger community that supports and honors diverse forms of faith/spiritual expression. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join this important dialogue and opportunity for learning and growing together. Lunch will be provided.
Date: March 14, 2023, from 12 – 2 PM
Location: Savoy Multipurpose Room
Additional events are being planned, and a full calendar of activities will be shared with the college community to engage everyone’s participation in this important endeavor.
On the other hand, there is still time to submit student nominations for the Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Student Recognition Events. All faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate students that have overcome major challenges and nevertheless continued to maintain good academic standing.

Selected students and nominating faculty/staff members will have the opportunity to attend one of the scheduled celebratory events and receive a special recognition from President Cocco De Filippis. Each selected student will receive a certificate, book, and a $500 stipend.
For faculty and staff, this is a wonderful opportunity to nominate a student you know has made major strides in advancing their education at Hostos while facing major challenges that could have deterred them from moving forward. Student Leadership Academy (SLA)
In February, Jason Libfeld, coordinator of the Student Leadership Academy (SLA), joined members Yassine Gaye and José González on their visit to the United States Air Force Academy campus in Colorado Springs for the 30th Annual National Character and Leadership Symposium.
Yassine and José were guests of the Academy, stayed on the base with cadet hosts, and had a full Air Force Academy experience. As part of the two-day conference, they participated in leadership and teamwork seminars and briefings. This experience equipped our students with important knowledge about how leaders are expected to effectively execute a mission while creating an environment of inclusion, emotional intelligence, and clear communication. Speakers included military and business leaders, astronauts, Medal of Honor winners, political commentators, authors, and staff of the Center of Character and Leadership Development of the Air Force Academy.
The Hostos students stated that interacting with so many people from across the nation gave them tools to tackle the challenges they face day to day in their leadership roles as executives in the SGA and as ambassadors in the SLA community.

“Freedom”
By Langston Hughes
Freedom will not come
Today, this year
Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.
I have as much right
As the other fellow has
To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.
I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I’m dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow’s bread.
Freedom
Is a strong seed
Planted
In a great need.
I live here, too.
I want my freedom
Just as you.

2023 Fiscal Year Deadline for Requisition Submissions
As we prepare to end the 2023 Fiscal Year (FY) on June 30, 2023, kindly take note of the following important date:
The last day to submit fully-approved and valid budget-checked Purchase Requisitions in CUNYfirst is Friday, March 31, at 5 p.m.
Requisitions entered into the CUNYfirst eProcurement system after this date are subject to rejection.
This deadline does not affect any purchases intended to be paid from Research Foundation, Hostos Community College Foundation Funding, and CUNYBuy Marketplace (Complete Books, Edge Electronics, Proftech) requisitions.
Note: Equipment, furniture, or other items that cannot be delivered or rendered by June 30 will be processed in FY 2024. Please check and confirm with your suppliers that all goods and services will be delivered by June 30 before submitting your requisition in the system.
Timely submission of all requisitions will ensure purchases are charged to the appropriate budget categories and the college receives all goods/services that require a lead time of approximately six to eight weeks prior to June 30. Goods/services received by the college after June 30 cannot be charged to the FY 2022–2023 budget, as per the City of New York and CUNY’s procurement regulations.
Additionally, once goods/services are received, it’s imperative that departments submit their Receiving Reports in a timely manner to facilitate payments to vendors. All invoices received must be forwarded to the Accounts Payable Office immediately for processing.
This is to ensure the Office of Procurement can begin year-end closing, the process of completing the financial activity for the fiscal year ending June 30, as mandated by the City of New York and CUNY. It is imperative all college departments adhere to this deadline so the Office of Procurement can complete the fiscal year year-end process effectively and efficiently.
If you have any questions, please contact the following individuals:
Procurement: Devon Hariprashad at ext 7965 or email dhariprashad@hostos.cuny.edu
Budget: Fanny Dumancela at ext 4434 or email fdumancela@hostos.cuny.edu
Accounts Payable: Bernard Sanders at ext 6670 or email bsanders@hostos.cuny.edu
Thank you for your kind cooperation and attention to this important due date.
