MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | |
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
Happy International Women’s Day! We have been celebrating and will continue to celebrate at Hostos in multiple ways. Just this week, the presentations and poetry readings for “Race and Gender in the Poetry of Dominican Women: Aída Cartagena Portalatín to this Day” was an hour of reflection and engagement by faculty and students. Thank you so very much to our wonderful readers.
On February 29, the “Countdown to Commencement” began. It was a delightful Hostos moment alongside outstanding graduating students such as Orlando Soto, with colorful cupcakes, coffee, and treats served in the A-Atrium for an hour, which reminded us all to take time to mentor our students about filing for graduation.
Diversity celebrations continue. Please be sure to put on your calendar the dates that appear in announcements. Hostos is a place to respect, honor, and embrace all our brothers and sisters in our common humanity. I also encourage you to sign up and participate, if you are so inclined, in one of the bachata lessons available from now through April 16, 2024, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the dance studio (C-152).
With midterms on our heels, dear students, stay focused on your studies. If you need help, it is readily available in the Hostos Academic Learning Center and/or the Writing Center.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

"How Do I Love Thee, Let Me Count the Ways"
By Elizabeth Barrett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
This poem is in the public domain. Prominent Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning first published the poem in 1850. The poem was part of a sonnet sequence called “Sonnets from the Portuguese.”

Recently, many of us have championed various initiatives aimed at improving CUNY. Among these, the Student Empowerment Day saw students unite to advocate for increased funding to support college students with disabilities. Similarly, during Higher Education Action Day, many participants rallied together to campaign for tuition-free and fully funded college education.
The SGA had the privilege of attending the New York State Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislators conference in Albany. During our time there, under the University Student Senate (USS) umbrella, we lobbied for several important causes. These included advocating for free MetroCards for all CUNY students, and securing $4 million in funding for mental health and disability services, among other initiatives. If you're interested in joining our efforts and making a difference, we encourage you to share your story with us here.
As the City University of New York (CUNY) evolves, the Student Government Association (SGA) is committed to advancing alongside it. Keep an eye out for our new banners, and expect a lineup of fresh events and opportunities for students every month. Despite the challenges of current times, where many initiatives are being delayed or eliminated, we remain steadfast in our advocacy. At Hostos Community College, we are more determined than ever to thrive and excel. Hostos represents the essence of the South Bronx — it's a beacon of life and opportunity for the community. Hostos is life and we will continue to blossom with it!
Sincerely,
Dainma

Dear Hostos Community,
As we enter the month of Ramadan, I extend warm greetings to all members of our diverse campus community who observe this sacred time. Ramadan holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide, marked by fasting from dawn until sunset, increased prayer, and acts of charity. It is a time of spiritual reflection and communal solidarity. In recognizing Ramadan, we affirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where all community members feel valued and respected. Let us embrace Ramadan's values of compassion, empathy, and generosity. Let us be mindful of our Muslim colleagues and classmates, offering them support and understanding as they observe this important time. Transfer Services: Student Spotlight
Gloria Santiago: From Hostos to Lehman and Back Home to Hostos!
I graduated from Hostos in 2019 and continued my studies at Lehman College’s Social Work program. During my time at Hostos and Lehman, I was part of the work-study program and was able to work and develop professionally as a Student Service Intake Assistant in SDEM. Once I graduated from Lehman in May of 2022, I was offered a Student Services College Assistant position at Hostos and shortly after became the SAP Appeal Coordinator for the SDEM Student Appeals Office. I enjoy working with students and helping them overcome their academic barriers so that they can continue their path to graduation! As a first-generation student, I understand the adversity students face, and my personal story drives me to help them even more. I am grateful for the path and people who led me here and so I pay it forward.
Here I am, a two-time CUNY graduate – and I am proud to be the first in my family to do so!

Impact of PEG Cuts: Hostos Community College
CUNY community college presidents were asked to prepare a one-page document that could be shared with New York City Councilmembers explaining the impact of the NYC government’s PEG cuts. Here is what President Cocco De Filippis submitted on behalf of Hostos to the City Council requesting its support in preventing further cuts to CUNY:
Program to Eliminate the GAP (PEG) cuts over the past several years have made Hostos Community College’s spending and staffing protocols more considered and stringent. The College places students’ academic journeys as the highest priority so teaching and learning have been maintained as best as possible. The College has relied on federal stimulus funds to offset revenue shortages, but those funds will soon be fully depleted. When cuts had to be made, we ensured that the majority were taken from administrative services and not the academic side of the College.
The vice presidents of every division at Hostos have been asked to carefully consider any new programming or replacement of vacant positions, to be conservative in their spending so as to not place the College in a position where we cannot meet our obligations now and in the outer years. College staffing needs are thoroughly reviewed to determine only the most critical positions necessary in order to maximize our human resources in this financially challenging time. Division leaders have been cautioned to keep Other Than Personnel Service (OTPS; i.e. resources allocated for non-salary expenditures) spending to strictly necessary items.
In the Student Development and Enrollment Management division, there has been no replacement of vacant positions in student support service areas even while enrollment numbers have been trending upwards. That means we have vacancies in Financial Aid, Admissions, and Advisement departments that remain unfilled.
In General Institutional Services, we have double-digit vacancies in Custodial Services, meaning that the division is currently operating with the bare minimum of staff. The IT department has also seen several reductions in staff over the years and is operating with a minimal crew supporting the campus community, and the campus network, handling increased security issues, and working on successfully incorporating CUNY-wide IT and IT-related initiatives.
At this point, further PEG cuts will mean more drastic cuts in student services because there is nothing else left to cut. This will impact student assistance in multiple ways, ranging from recruitment and admissions to advising and learning supports. Academic programming may also be affected as we are forced to look for even greater efficiencies, i.e. less faculty and fewer course offerings. We may soon face a time when we will not be able to fill vacant faculty positions, thus impacting students’ learning experiences and career paths.
Hostos is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation, and many of our students come to us unprepared for the jump from high school to college. Despite that, we help these students succeed, earn degrees, and find careers that would not otherwise be open to them. And because our student body is 95% people of color and two-thirds female, we are proud to say that Hostos helps to close the racial and gender gaps in higher education.
Hostos’s enrollment is increasing, which is a good sign, but we are still not back to where we were pre-pandemic. That means we need support from the City, not additional PEG cuts that undermine our ability to attract, retain, and serve our students. Restoration of some of the PEGs that produced permanent reductions would be a step towards getting the College back to a more stable position, allowing us to advance our efforts in serving our students and community. We greatly need your support so that we may continue to do our work of educating and training students for the jobs and the New York City of tomorrow.
