A POEM

“Gift”

By Czeslaw Milosz

A day so happy.

Fog lifted early, I worked in the garden.

Hummingbirds were stopping over honeysuckle flowers.

There was no thing on earth I wanted to possess.

I knew no one worth my envying him.

Whatever evil I had suffered, I forgot.

To think that once I was the same man did not embarrass me.

In my body I felt no pain.

When straightening up, I saw the blue sea and sails.

CUNY AAS Redesign: Curricular Improvements Informed by Assessment of Hostos’ AAS Outcomes

In 2022, CUNY Central initiated the AAS Redesign project; two years later, the project is approaching its scheduled end. Hostos faculty, working with OAA leadership, made good use of the funding to revise and strengthen AAS degree programs.

The impetus for the AAS Redesign project was an analysis of CUNY’s associate degrees conducted by Bain, a consulting firm. Student outcomes, including graduation rates, transfer rates, employment rates, and wages, were among the metrics. The initial reports were problematic in numerous ways (for example, while students admitted into Nursing AAS programs have high graduation rates, employment rates, and wages, many more students are coded as Nursing students and are not eligible to apply to the clinical programs).

Among the faculty-led changes informed by the Bain reports are:

  1. Aging & Health AAS will be converted to an AS degree that transfers to Lehman, reflecting academic/transfer opportunities and labor market demand for bachelor and graduate degrees in gerontology;
  2. Office Technology AAS, medical office manager track, curriculum has been revised to better align with industry needs (including the addition of a hands-on/virtual office component) and to reduce duplicative course work;
  3. Digital Design & Animation AAS has revised an Independent Study course to be specifically designed as a career and transfer exploration and preparation course. The next steps may include making this course a required degree component;
  4. SDEM and the Allied Health Department have redesigned the way in which students interested in applying for Nursing AAS are admitted to Hostos (as Liberal Arts AA Pre-Nursing). Once enrolled, students’ progress is closely tracked (with support from OIERA), and SDEM and Allied Health have implemented a detailed communication plan to ensure students are advised and provided with information about academic/career options if they are not eligible to apply to Nursing. Implemented in Spring 2023, the new process is yielding positive results regarding student retention.

Many thanks to the faculty and staff who conducted a deep dive into their respective curricula and to implement lasting changes to Hostos’ AAS programs.

COIL Connects Hostos Students to Students in Honduras

Professor Amy J. Ramson, Esq., COIL Coordinator

Public Policy & Law Unit, Behavioral and Social Sciences Department

COIL Connect, the preeminent organization supporting the international growth of COIL Virtual Exchange at the institutional level, invited Hostos Community College to participate in an innovative Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiative funded by the US Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and led by Jon Rubin of COIL Consulting, which seeks to develop bilingual, Spanish-English COILs. Hostos was chosen because, under the leadership of Professor Amy Ramson, the College has been actively developing COIL exchanges and a community of practice and, as a Hispanic Serving Institution, possesses one of the highest percentages of Hispanic students of COIL Connect’s 361-member institutions. Since 2021, the initiative has established connections between seven U.S. universities and five Honduran universities, contributing to a more inclusive form of internationalization. This project will build upon its past success. COIL Connect selected Professor Elyse Zucker, an Associate Professor in the English department whose areas of specialty include 19th and 20th Century literature, psychoanalysis, environmentalism, food studies and jazz, to collaborate with Menelio Bardales Domínguez, a Professor at the National School of Forestry Sciences in Honduras. They developed a shared syllabus on the topic of green sustainability through professional development sessions, which were held from April 26 to May 31, 2024, entitled "Fundamentals of COIL Design and Facilitation for Universities in Honduras and Central America — A Regional Partnership Initiative with the United State." We are proud to have been selected to participate in this institutional initiative, which furthers Hostos’ mission’s pillar of diversity and multiculturalism and honors our students as global citizens who are bilingual and successfully navigate more than one culture.

Brightspace Transition Updates

Dr. Babette Audant, Dean of Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness

On Monday, April 29, Kim Siegenthaler, CUNY Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Innovation, shared updates about the Brightspace transition with faculty. Her message includes milestones (summarized below) and details about support, evaluation, training, and helpful links (see below). For additional updates, resources, and access to archived communications, please visit the Hostos Brightspace Hub and the CUNY LMS Transition website.

Recent updates:

  • CUNYfirst was successfully integrated with Brightspace on April 3. This integration includes feeding enrollment data for Transition Groups 1 (BMCC, SLU, SPS, Hostos, John Jay, MEC, and Queens) and 2 (Baruch, Bronx, Guttman, KCC, NYCCT, QCC, and York) into our new Learning Management System (LMS). Transition Groups 1 and 2 faculty now have access to their course shells within Brightspace.

  • Students in Transition Groups 1 and 2 may begin to explore Brightspace features and take an asynchronous Brightspace Orientation for Students course, which will complement Hostos’ revised “Are You Ready?” course.

  • A Brightspace Student Guide has been developed (in partnership with CityTech) and distributed.

  • A new inquiry process is established to streamline the support process for colleges with questions about our implementation.

  • Our Tool Evaluation Committee has completed an initial review of folio tools and is now exploring Achievement tools.

As 14 CUNY colleges prepare to transition to Brightspace this summer, students, faculty, and staff will benefit from continuous support, which is available 24/7/365 to everyone at CUNY. Through the Brightspace Virtual Assistant, anyone logged into Brightspace can reach a support agent anytime via chat, email, or phone. In addition to the training provided by Hostos’ Educational Technology (EdTech), training resources include:

  • CUNY Central’s faculty training sessions are currently being offered to prepare and train for Brightspace. Workshops are currently available through June.

  • Watch videos of instructors to learn about Brightspace.

  • Join the Brightspace community for support and guidance if needed.

Student Leadership Academy

Leadership Retreat

The Leadership Retreat, a longstanding tradition of the Student Leadership Academy (SLA), has undergone a remarkable evolution since its inception in 2009 as HALO (Hostos Athletics and Leaders Organize), later transitioning to SOAR (Students Organized and Ready). Initially conceived as a partnership between SLA and Athletics, the retreat aimed to foster camaraderie among student leaders through team-building exercises and high-adrenaline challenges like the high ropes course and the towering 60-foot climbing wall. By 2012, the focus shifted to a collaboration between SLA and SGA, expanding the retreat's scope to prepare approximately 50 students annually for leadership roles on campus and beyond. However, the global pandemic disrupted this trajectory, forcing cancellations in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

This year marked a triumphant return to the wilderness for the Leadership Retreat, albeit with a smaller group at the YMCA Camp of the Pines in New Jersey. Despite the scaled-back program, participants delved into activities aligned with the CUNY Star Model for Leadership Development, facilitated by camp experts. From mastering outdoor survival skills to conquering team challenges, the weekend was packed with transformative experiences. Highlights included cozy evenings around the campfire, exhilarating scavenger hunts, and nerve-wracking feats on the high ropes course and climbing wall. Through reflection and shared experiences, students emerged with newfound communication prowess, collaborative spirit, and a broader perspective on their place in the world. Reflection videos from several students offer glimpses into this transformative journey here.

We look forward to a joyous celebration of our graduates' hard work and success.

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“won’t you celebrate with me”

By Lucille Clifton

 won’t you celebrate with me

what i have shaped into

a kind of life? i had no model.

born in babylon

both nonwhite and woman

what did i see to be except myself?

i made it up

here on this bridge between

starshine and clay,

my one hand holding tight

my other hand; come celebrate

with me that everyday

something has tried to kill me

and has failed.

Cafeteria Vendor RFP Progress

The Hostos, Bronx, and LaGuardia Community College Food Services Contract was released to the public in early April. All interested proposers had to follow through with mandatory site visits to each campus at the start of May. Thirteen (13) vendors confirmed for the site visit at Hostos Community College, scheduled for May 2 at 2 p.m. Procurement Director Devon Hariprashad provided the tour, focusing on the cafeteria and dining space.

Post-site visit, all vendors have until 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, to send any questions to the College RFP Administrator. To keep the process fair and transparent, the colleges will then issue an addendum with answers to all submitted questions.

We are excited that there are many interested vendors and look forward to their proposals. The Proposal submission deadline is June 20 at 11 a.m. It will be a waiting game until proposals are submitted and the three colleges’ Food Services Committees can begin reviewing them.

CEWD Student Spotlight

Seiaka Touray's pursuit of a career in healthcare is best described as a journey of resilience and determination. When he was a high school freshman, a life-altering accident suddenly paused Seiaka’s education. However, after meeting the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) assigned to his surgery, he identified a new career pathway as a CRNA. Seiaka earned his GED and began his educational journey.

While pursuing an associate's degree in Dietetics and Nutrition Science at CUNY’s Bronx Community College, Seiaka enrolled in Hostos CEWD’s Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certificate Program. He successfully completed our PCT program in Spring 2023. After earning his PCT certificate, he was hired as a Patient Care Associate (PCA). “Everything the instructors taught was relevant in the exams and at the job," said Seiaka. The knowledge he gained from Hostos CEWD’s PCT Certificate Program helped him transition into his role as a PCA.

Seiaka also credits CEWD’s PCT program with preparing him for his nursing coursework and making it less challenging. “I’ve been recommending the PCT program at Hostos to other students interested in nursing,” said Seiaka. “It’s a great way to get exposure to the basics because the degree is very, very challenging.” He is currently pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Nursing at St. Paul’s School of Nursing and anticipates graduating in Summer 2025. Seiaka remains focused on his long-term career goal—becoming a CRNA.

Hostos’ 2024 Annual Benefit Highlights the Impact of Scholarships

The Division of Institutional Advancement is grateful for the College’s supportive attendance at the 2024 Annual Scholarship Benefit. The money raised will provide emergency scholarships and support programs that enrich the student experience at Hostos.

The four honorees shared inspiring words, encouraging us to think about the future with hope and recognize our important role in shaping a more just world. Closing out the program, nursing major Erika Francis reminded us all of the immense impact of scholarships, and alumnus Ifeanyi Obinali ’15 illustrated the spirit of community by using the success he has obtained since Hostos to give back and uplift current students. “I am a firsthand beneficiary of a lot of the scholarships and experiences made possible by your generous support…These moments and experiences… [are], frankly, the reason I am speaking to you today.”

We extend thanks, also, to the 26 local partners who supported us through sponsorship. A special thanks to our Premier Sponsor, Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and our Diamond and Benefactor Sponsors, Trane Technologies, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Montefiore Einstein.
