MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | |
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
We have reached the last publication of “El Semanario” for this academic year. Wishing all successful finals and a good summer. Below I share my remarks from the All College Meeting held this past Monday, May 15.
ALL COLLEGE MEETING
Welcoming Remarks
May 15, 2023
Hostos Community College
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
It is a joy to gather at the conclusion of a year of challenges and yet significant achievements. This academic year we transitioned to predominantly in-person, both in the classroom and participation outside of the classroom, for intellectual and cultural activities. As always, our main concern is the well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and administration, as we offer high-quality instruction and student and academic support services. This is how we live our mission at Hostos.
I thank colleagues and students for joining us this afternoon as I look forward to presentations by College Senate Chair Ialongo, SGA President González and members of the President’s Cabinet. Mil gracias, Executive Chief of Staff Kreymer, for your dynamic moderation of this meeting. Congratulations to all as we celebrate colleagues recognized today for their collaborative spirit with a “manos a la obra/all-hands-on-deck” award.
Throughout this academic year, we continued to reach out and keep the college community informed, as we have done since fall 2020 by means of the Hostos Weekly / El Semanario Hostosiano entries about our collective work; work so many of us have shared. This work has been supported as well by those on the ground, our generous laborers and custodians, Conference Center, Information Technology and Public Safety colleagues. Thank you, mil gracias, does not begin to express the gratitude and the pride I feel.
The Strategic Planning Team took on the responsibility to provide a just and equitable educational experience as the guiding principle of the evidence-based, participatory process to offer mission-aligned ways our campus community and external stakeholders can collaborate toward our shared interests in student success for all. Dean Audant will offer a brief summary of the process and content, as we also look forward to final discussions with the College Senate and our Foundation. Let me just add that I am most proud of how the plan balances supporting students intellectually and practically.
We celebrate this afternoon having come together as a college community on multiple occasions to prepare for the Aspen Institute Prize for Community College Excellence 2023, preparation of documents, and interviews; the engaged and inclusive Strategic Planning process and the powerful draft final plan created as a result of multiple voices at the table; having our Middle States Self-Study selected as one of the documents to be shared with colleagues at other institutions of higher education as they prepare for their own self-study process; the planning and opening of the Hostos Research Center, promising precisely the opening of doors to research opportunities for our students and faculty; preparing and submitting a successful $1 million congressional earmark in support of our students’ transfer opportunities; the successful submission by colleagues in OAA of a title V grant that will go far in years to come to support academic initiatives; the very successful Gala Celebration of the 55th Anniversary of the Founding of the College, and the multiple celebratory activities to mark this important moment for all of us.
Making retention gains represented a major focus, too - building on our innovation in developmental education, Gateway courses, cohort offerings, and advisement investments produced an 8.2% improvement in fall-to-spring retention, resulting in a 7.3% increase in enrollment as compared to Spring 2022. Bravi!
As discussed previously, our Strategic Plan (2023-2028) will extend more intentionally our horizon beyond graduation, with a strong focus on employment and transfer to help students embrace their paths forward from the time they arrive to well after they leave us. To that end, the generous support from The MacKenzie Scott Gift and the seeds planted with our ongoing initiatives will go far. We celebrate early wonderful results in engagement and participation in initiatives that go from Families United in Education, Hostos Research Center’s innovations, Workforce Initiatives in non-credit and credit opportunities, Educating in Diversity programming, NexGen Public Health Scholars, and other 2+2+2 transfer opportunities, Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus, Student Symposium, Research grants and scholarships that have strongly supported our efforts this last year and past summer.
I know you've heard me say this before. Still, it is worth repeating that my particular passion, a passion I share with many colleagues at Hostos, is giving students the opportunity to pursue a liberal arts foundation while also articulating pathways that lead to jobs and careers that help our students earn a good living.
As always, I close my remarks by reflecting on Pablo Neruda’s Nobel Laureate speech: his understanding of the connection we have with others and the responsibility we have to one another as we try to move forward as human beings in this life’s journey. Here is a brief excerpt from Neruda’s speech, words some of you have heard me read many times before:
All paths lead to the same goal; to convey to others what we are…
but in this dance or in this song, there are fulfilled the most ancient
rites of our conscience in the awareness of being human and of
believing in a common destiny.
I wish us all a rewarding end of the academic year with love and hope. As we continue our aspirational work, may your path bring joyful opportunities to support and encourage our students’ and each other’s journeys.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

"Sonnet 42"
Julia Álvarez
Sometimes the words are so close I am
more who I am when I’m down on paper
than anywhere else as if my life were
practising for the real me I become
unbuttoned from the anecdotal and
unnecessary and undressed down
to the figure of the poem, line by line,
the real text, a child could understand.
Why do I get confused living it through?
Those of you, lost and yearning to be free,
who hear these words, take heart from me.
I once was in as many drafts as you.
But briefly, essentially, here I am…
Who touches this poem touches a woman.

Update on Infrastructure Projects
As the spring semester wraps up, it’s time for another update on some of the infrastructure work taking place on campus:
- The façade work on the south wall of the A building (adjacent to the park) resumed in April as the weather and temperatures became more conducive to masonry work.
- The 9 Air Handlers Project is progressing in the old wing of the A building and has a target completion date of December 2023.
- The repairs to the 429 Grand Concourse space continue. The walls have been repaired and are in the process of being repainted. Once the work on the walls is completed, the floor repairs will commence. The furniture vendor will also be inspecting the furniture to determine their condition and if replacement is necessary.
- As for the Pedestrian Bridge between the A and C Buildings, temporary stabilization for any loose exterior metal ceiling panels underneath the bridge should start by the end of May 2023. Open areas will be closed up, and loose panels will be secured. A more permanent renovation of the metal panel system will follow once a design is completed.

Two CEWD Alumni will Graduate with Honors from Hostos in Spring 2023
This semester, two CEWD alumni that enrolled in the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program in Community Health at Hostos will graduate with honors. In March 2021, Hawa Abraham began her journey at Hostos by enrolling in CEWD’s Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate Program, which has an existing credit articulation agreement with the A.S. degree program in Community Health. Upon enrolling at Hostos, she received nine (9) credits for prior learning toward her Community Health degree. In 2022, Ms. Abraham was hired as a CHW apprentice by Montefiore Health Systems. She is graduating with a 3.9 grade point average. She has been selected to participate in the Hostos NexGen Public Health Scholars Program, which will allow her to complete a Bachelor’s degree at the Columbia School of General Studies and a Master’s degree at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health.
Kacey Witter was already enrolled in the A.S. degree program in Community Health at Hostos when she decided to accelerate her academic progress by also completing CEWD’s CHW certificate. Ms. Witter earned nine (9) college credits upon completing the certificate, which helped her realize her goal — to graduate a semester early. She is graduating with a GPA of 3.9.

Hostos Student Wins Prestigious Transfer Scholarship, Selected from 1,700 Applicants
Congratulations to Fatima Bah, one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. She is a Mathematics major at Hostos and has been an active member of the community throughout her years of study. A member of the Student Leadership Academy and a Kaplan Educational Foundation Scholar, Fatima will fully transfer to Cornell University in Spring 2024 as a Civil Engineering major. Besides being an active tutor in her areas of study, and a full-time mother, she has been a Plan Examiner Intern at the NYC Department of Buildings and a Research Assistant at the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) at Hostos.
The Cooke Foundation scholarship aims for recipients to complete their undergraduate education with as little debt as possible. Out of 1,700 applicants from 448 community colleges nationwide, only 60 students received the scholarship. The award, which is last-dollar funding after all institutional aid, can provide as much as $55,000 per year toward tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. Additionally, Cooke Scholars are welcomed into the thriving Cooke community and network, receive comprehensive education and career advising, and are eligible for internship and graduate school funding from the Foundation.
Hostos Represented at New York State Summit Against Hate
Hostos Community College Dean Ana García Reyes, Chief Diversity Officer Philip Oliveri, and Governmental Affairs Director Eric Radezky represented Hostos Community College at the “New York United: Stronger Together Against Hate” summit, held on May 10. The inaugural summit brought together community leaders and government partners to stand against hate, violent extremism, and discrimination across New York State. Governor Kathy Hochul provided opening remarks. Former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was the keynote speaker. Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado offered closing remarks. The summit was jointly presented by the New York State Division of Human Rights, Division of Criminal Justice Services, and Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. State, local, and federal partners, community-based and faith leaders, and advocates gathered to share policies, programs, and practices to build safer and stronger communities where hate has no place. Speakers also shared their strategic and extensive efforts to address hate-motivated crimes, prevent the spread of violent extremism, and promote unity and reconciliation.
“Issues involving hate and discrimination must be addressed as these have a devastating impact on our communities. I commend the Governor and her partners for addressing the issue,” said Dean García Reyes.
