My Dear Colleagues and Students,

Welcome back from what I know was a restorative and yet productive spring break. We have so much to work for as the next eleven days of the semester before final exams remind us. This is the time to ensure that we complete our course work, get all of the support we need in preparation for exams and consider the celebrations ahead for our graduates and how those of us who are continuing students have registered for summer and fall semesters. Persistence and dedication win the day!

As we continue our journey, I remind you to ensure that you are applying for the financial support you are eligible to receive. For instance, The FY 2025 Budget introduces substantial increases in TAP benefits. Additionally, students who meet eligibility requirements may qualify for Part-Time TAP, covering up to 11 credits per semester. Please see our press release here for more information.

I wish you dedication and persistence as you engage fully with your studies in the next couple of weeks to ensure that you have done your part in accessing all that a life-transforming higher education can offer. We are here for you!

April Showers Bring May Flowers!

Welcome back, Hostos! The Student Government Association is delighted to see that this spring has been as inspiring for you as it has been for us. We've been bustling with events in the weeks leading up to spring break, including our annual Multifaith Symposium. This gathering brought together students, professors, and staff to explore the diverse spiritual expressions on our campus. Local religious leaders from our community also joined us, sharing their experiences bridging gaps and fostering unity around common goals.



As a reminder, graduation approaches, and many more events are on the way! One grand event that I know many will be excited about is Spirit Week! Monday through Friday will have a different theme, from Twin Day to Hostos Spirit Day, so keep an eye out for flyers.

It is critical to address the responsibility and accountability of our renowned educators. Professors clearly have a platform worthy of respect, but it is critical to remember that this respect should never be exploited or abused. We entrust teachers with shaping minds and encouraging academic advancement, thus, it is critical that they maintain the highest standards of conduct. Academic freedom is crucial but should never be used to justify unethical actions. I am thrilled to work with the Senate committee to create actionable methods to hold professors accountable for their behavior. Let us work together to establish a climate that values integrity and fairness, ensuring that our educational institutions continue to be beacons of excellence.

Hostos Research Center Announces 2024 Adelante Awardees

The Hostos Research Center and Committee on Sponsored Programs and Grants (HRC-CSPG) is pleased to announce the 2024 ADELANTE Awardees, who will soon be embarking on the development of their funded research projects over a one-year period. Nine grants, ranging from $6,000 to $10,000, were awarded along two tracks. Track 1 projects will address research, need-based, creative/transformative interventions in all disciplines, and Track 2 research/intervention projects will address issues affecting the South Bronx community. Each project will also engage a Hostos student research assistant who will receive faculty mentoring and hands-on research experience. Students Invited To Virtual Information Session For NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program

Students are invited to attend a virtual information session on Monday, May 6, to learn how this program provides a pathway to careers in public health by providing full tuition coverage, stipends, and other supports, at Hostos and our partner Columbia University. Representatives from Columbia University will be in attendance and available to answer your questions about studying at Columbia and the incredible career prospects in public health and epidemiology. Senator Rivera and the 52nd Precinct Host Electronic Disposal Event, May 9

Dean Garcia Reyes Engages in Bronx Community Events and Advisory Councils

The Dean attended the Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson’s State of the Borough Address on April 18 at Cardinal Hayes High School, and two other community events hosted by Borough President Gibson. For those interested in learning more about the Bronx Borough President Community Resources – Advisory Councils, please contact David Coulibaly, Director of Community Services, at dcoulibaly@bronxbp.nyc.gov. 

The Advisory Councils under the Bronx Borough President offer a platform and direct access to city government for some of the borough's most underrepresented groups. These councils, including the African Advisory Council, Bronx Clergy Task Force, Disability Advisory Council, Domestic and Gender-based Violence Advisory Council, HIV Roundtable - LGBT Policy Task Force, Public Housing Advisory Council, and Veteran Advisory Council, collaborate with Borough President Gibson and her team. They focus on community issues, advocacy, and improving the quality of life through meetings, public events, and various activities.

We Encourage the Community to Participate in Upcoming Events

The Office of Community Relations encourages everyone to engage in several impactful events aimed at community development and personal growth:

1. Restorative Justice Community Building Circles Training: A comprehensive training session designed to teach the principles of restorative justice through community building circles. The training is set for May 2024. Interested participants can apply here. The deadline to apply is TODAY!

2. Train & Earn Department of Youth and Community Development Workforce Connect: This program provides essential skills training and employment opportunities. For more details and to view a list of providers, go here.

3. Healing the Hurt Conference: Scheduled for May 17, this in-person conference will take place at the UJA Federation of New York, located at 130 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022. Participate in the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and Empower NYC Youth

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) offers a valuable opportunity for New York City youth aged 14 to 24 to gain paid summer employment for up to six weeks during July and August. Enroll Early and Get Free Ice Cream on Wednesday, May 8!

On May 8, from 12 to 3 p.m., a Mr. Softee ice cream truck will be on campus to celebrate students who have enrolled for the Summer or Fall 2024 terms either before or on that date. Enrolled students can present their course schedule to receive a voucher from their advisor or the front desk staff in the Advisement 'M' building (429 Grand Concourse). 

Faculty members are encouraged to inform their students about this opportunity and are welcome to accompany their classes to the M building to motivate registration for upcoming semesters. 

This "Ice Cream Fiesta!" event involves a collaborative effort from all advising units on campus, including ASAP, SSCU, College Discovery, CUNY Edge, CUNY Start, CLIP, and Dual Degree programs. Director Siddique Mohamed of ASAP spearheads this initiative. "We look forward to gaining needed momentum in our Summer and Fall enrollments and we look forward to enjoying some ice cream with you and your students!"

STEM Waivers are Available for Students Enrolled in Eligible Course Sections

The College has received funds to waive tuition for select summer course sections to support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) course credit accumulation. The selected course sections are listed below.

To be eligible for a STEM waiver, students must meet all of the following requirements:

(1) Enroll in the class for the first time

(2) Be enrolled in an associate degree program

(3) Require the course for their major

(4) Were charged tuition as a New York City Resident

(5) Be enrolled in one of the waiver-eligible sections

The waiver is posted a few weeks after the start of the session when the Bursar has reviewed students’ accounts and confirmed eligibility.

Important Notes:

• Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements should not enroll in the waiver-eligible sections if other sections of the course are available.

• Students who are not eligible for the waivers but enroll in the waiver-eligible sections will be responsible for tuition charges.

• Students withdrawing from STEM waiver-eligible courses are subject to applicable charges if the withdrawal does not take place before the relevant deadline. Please visit the Registrar’s web page for withdrawal deadlines. STEM waivers do NOT apply to withdrawal charges.

• STEM waivers cover tuition only. Students are responsible for fees.

• Students should only register for courses which are needed for their major and for which they meet the pre/co-requisites.

• Students do not have to be financial aid eligible to receive a waiver.

CUNY K16 Pedagogy Fellowship

They were selected out of a pool of applicants of professors who frequently teach College Now (CN) and Early College (EC) courses from across CUNY.

K-16 Pedagogy Fellows attend Professional Learning sessions, adapt ideas to their own classroom and document their learning. They share and enact research-based pedagogical strategies to enhance student learning outcomes in CN and EC classrooms. In culmination, fellows will share their classroom practice and reflections with a community of other College Now and Early College Instructors and author an entry for a compiled resource library. 

Professor Colón-López says “The K16 fellowship has been VERY helpful in more fully understanding CUNY Central's goals for their "college readiness" - I am integrating some of this information for the SIELP curriculum. I've learned that I make assumptions about the types of skills students come to the course with.” Professor Cruz says he is “adding more structure to an existing assignment...[t]he fellowship helped me flesh it out.”

Feliks Gross Awards for Outstanding Research for Assistant Professors in CUNY, 2024

Academic Affairs is proud to share the news that Professor Victoria Muñoz has been selected to receive one of the 2024 Feliks Gross Awards for Outstanding Research for Assistant Professors in CUNY. The selection committee wrote, “Every year we select from a large group of highly qualified, academically impressive Assistant Professors from all CUNY campuses. This year was no different. Your award is richly deserved and the selection committee was honored to read of your accomplishments.” As a part of this honor, Prof. Muñoz will present her research in a talk alongside other awardees as part of the Feliks Gross and Henry Wasser lecture series, at which time the award will be officially conferred. Congratulations to Dr. Muñoz, Assistant Professor from the English Department.

Commencement Marshalls are Needed

All faculty and staff are invited to volunteer to serve as college or platform marshalls for the 2024 Commencement. It’s important to have the presence and continued support from the faculty and staff who have guided the graduates during their time at Hostos, to have you there to cheer for them as they cross the stage and guide them throughout the entire ceremony - let them know that your support endures through their momentous achievement. Volunteering as a Marshall not only celebrates the achievements of our students but also demonstrates your unwavering commitment to the students' success beyond the doors of Hostos. 2024 Honors Convocation

Academic Affairs was delighted to begin sending student invitations to the 2024 Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. All faculty and staff are encouraged to join the celebration by sitting on stage. Stage seating can be reserved by completing this online form. The Second Hostos Student Symposium was a Success!

The second Hostos Student Symposium, made possible by Ms. Mackenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives and the support of our ASAP program, was held on Thursday, April 18. By all accounts, it was a great success. More than 300 faculty, staff, and students participated throughout the day. The Symposium celebrated and recognized the academic work of over 100 students by giving them the opportunity to showcase their achievements, projects, creative work, and research from this academic year. The day’s activities began with an address from our inspirational keynote speaker, educator, and author, NoNieqa Ramos. Student presentations throughout the day engaged faculty members from all academic departments, and presentations ranged across fields, including  STEM, Allied Health, Game Design, Education, Literature, the Humanities, and Behavioral and Social Sciences. We heard from students at all different stages in their educational journey at Hostos – from those who are in the Honors, CSTEP, CRSP, and LSAMP programs to students who are in our high school programs, our First Year Seminar and Capstone courses, and students who are tutors in our Writing Center. Each project was presented with the support of one of the nearly 50 faculty mentors who worked with the students to prepare them to share their work at the Symposium. The wide variety and range of the topics speak to our students' intellectual engagement and our faculty's dedication. Presentation modes included panels, roundtables, and poster presentations. It took a great deal of care, time, and commitment from many faculty, staff, and administrators to make the Student Research Symposium possible; a heartfelt thanks is extended to everyone involved and those who could attend. We look forward to working with the college community on the 2025 Symposium.

Have you applied for FAFSA? TAP? There is still time to apply for TAP by filling out the FAFSA. Once submitted, New York State residents attending NYS campuses can link directly to the TAP application. For students who have already enrolled and submitted their FAFSA for the 2023-2024 academic year, TAP awards may be automatically prorated or adjusted based on the number of enrolled credits.

Attend a CUNY FAFSA workshop! Students and families are invited to join an online workshop. Information will be provided about the cost of attendance, the types of financial aid available, and the financial aid application process. Student Spotlight: Nakeem Hamilton is an athlete with a creative force!

Nakeem Hamilton graduated from Hostos Community College in May of 2019 with a degree in Liberal Arts Applied Science. He then attended Mercy College on an athletic and academic merit scholarship and graduated in 2021 with a dual major in Business Administration and Finance. Nakeem garnered the opportunity to play basketball professionally in Portugal before career-ending knee surgeries.

Personal/Artistic Achievements: Nakeen started his own entertainment company that now partners with Nonprofits and other small companies across the city to coordinate events and document them with photography and videography.

What am I doing now? Currently, I work for a major corporation as part of their field marketing and production team and manage my own entertainment company. Eventually, I will open my own studio and start recording much more heavy productions like movies, documentaries, etc.

Advice for Hostos students: Never believe that your dreams are too far. It’s never where you start, but it’s how you attack the process of reaching your destination. You must fall in love with the process of being great at whatever it is you choose. And lastly, listen and learn! A wise man learns from the mistakes of others; a fool learns from their own!

Transformational Initiatives Funding

At the beginning of the year, Hostos was informed that the FY2024 State-enacted state budget would include $50M for Transformational Initiatives for CUNY. The spending plan for the initiative program includes $20 million of direct campus allocations. The funds would allow campuses to invest in non-recurring initiative projects that align with the University’s Strategic Roadmap, such as investments to support innovation, help meet future workforce needs, enhance student support services, improve academic programs, increase enrollment, and modernize campus operations.

Hostos Community College was allocated $695,000 in Transformational Initiative funding to be used in FY2024 and FY2025 with all funds to be expended by June 30, 2025. The College identified six initiatives for the use of its allocation, all of which are in line with the College’s mission and the University’s Strategic Roadmap: 

1.    Providing access to higher education: Funding for Bridge Tuition Support - $100,000

2.    Food Pantry support - $75,000

3.    Modernizing and securing Hostos - $306,297

4.    Support of enrollment and retention - $75,921

5.    Meet student needs for flexible courses and programs - $77,450

6.    Support marketing and engagement efforts - $60,000

Hostos’ spending plan was submitted to the Central Office for review in early March to ensure alignment with “CUNY Lifting New York” and the appropriation language in the enacted state budget. We are happy to inform the community that our plan was approved. The College recently received the allocation, allowing us to initiate the proposed FY24 projects.

CEWD’s Bingo with a Twist

On Wednesday, April 17, the CEWD Vice President hosted “Bingo with a Twist.” It was a fun afternoon of bingo and games, including Hostos trivia. To read some of the Hostos trivia facts that were shared during the event, please click here. Over fifty (50) students, faculty, and staff attended the event.

Over 60 prizes were awarded, including items donated by various departments across the college. We would like to thank the Office of Academic Affairs, Athletics, Career Services, Communications, the Conference Center, CUNY Edge, the CUNY Fatherhood Academy, Duplicating, Facilities, the Hostos Library, the President’s Office, Receiving, the Student Government Association (SGA), Student Activities, the Office of the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Wellness Center, and CEWD staff for helping make this event a success.

Michael Potack and Family Establish Largest Endowed Scholarship in Hostos History

It is our great pleasure to announce that on April 10, we finalized the Randi Potack, Dorothy Hausberg and Judith Z. Potack Memorial Endowed Scholarship. This is the largest endowed scholarship gift in the history of the College!

This fund, established by one of our 2023 Gala honorees, Michael Potack, and his three sons, Robert, David, and Jonathan, will ultimately total nearly half a million dollars and fund countless scholarships for students in Hostos’ RN program—year after year—in perpetuity. The Potack’s gift and pledge will also earn a 25% current use match provided by CUNY, made possible by a New York State earmark. The match will make it possible to disburse more than sixty $2,000 scholarship awards for students pursuing an RN between now and June 30, 2025. 

The scholarships honor the memory of three beloved women whose care and concern for others have had a profound and enduring impact not only on members of the Potack Family but also on the Bronx community.

The Foundation is grateful to the Potack family for their years of partnership and their continued investment in Hostos students, as well as the improvement of healthcare through nursing. Mr. Potack has frequently expressed his admiration for Hostos students, acknowledging that this city, and especially his family’s business, Unitex Healthcare Laundry Services, owe a great debt to the people of the South Bronx immigrant community for their extraordinary hard work and determination. Hostos Presents: First-time Homebuyer Conference with SONYMA

On Saturday, April 6th, the Hostos Office of Alumni Relations, in partnership with the One Stop Program and the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA), successfully hosted a First-Time Homebuyer Conference at CUNY Hostos Community College.

More than 160 attendees, including NYC residents, Hostos students, faculty, and staff, gained valuable insights and information to guide them on the path to homeownership at the event.

A special thank you goes to Hostos alumnae SONYMA’s Libria Gibson-Obama and Hostos’ Madeline Cruz for their invaluable support and leadership in making this event possible. We would also like to express our gratitude to the dedicated volunteers, Hostos students Mariah Odom and Miriam Fidelis Jr., who contributed to the conference's success.

Undocumented Black Students’ Experiences Discussed at Hostos

Dr. Felecia Russell, author of "Amplifying Black Undocumented Student Voices in Higher Education," delivered a thought-provoking book talk at Hostos Community College on Friday, April 26. The event, attended by approximately 70 individuals, including students, administrators, staff, and faculty, provided valuable insights into the often-overlooked experiences of Black undocumented students in higher education. Congratulations to Professor Simona Prives

Media Design Assistant Professor Simona Prives held an exhibition titled "towards the noise of dark waters" at the Practice gallery in Philadelphia, from April 5 to 28. The show featured immersive video installations that constructed a multi-sensory reality through life-sized projections. Each piece started as a collage, combining densely layered drawings, ink paintings, and various forms of printmaking and photography, including both hand-shot and found images. Hostos Offers Free Preventive Dental Hygiene Services to the Public

The Dental Hygiene Patient Care Facility at Hostos Community College is a teaching unit that provides high-quality dental care, primarily cleanings and dental x-rays to the community, while adhering to the most current sterilization techniques. Several appointments will be needed and each may last three hours at a time.

Title: “The Hostos Neighborhood”: First Year Seminar: A New York State of Mind Photo Exhibit

Description: “The Hostos Neighborhood” is an exhibit of photographs taken by students in the First Year Seminar: A New York State of Mind. Sponsored by the Educating for Diversity: Ms.MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiative, ten students were each awarded a $25 prize for their images which will be on exhibit for the Hostos Community in the A-Atrium from May 3 - May 15. In creating their photographs, students recognized the infrastructural, cultural, and justice issues as part of the historical makeup of the South Bronx. With diverse imagery and text detailing what is beautiful and problematic, students provide a “visual voice” to the surrounding neighborhood and its people.​

Description: The day has arrived for the showcase, "Let’s Talk: Rethinking Authentic Learning & Assessment in the Age of AI." This event will allow attendees to explore strategies to strike a balance between leveraging AI advancements and nurturing the unique intellectual contributions of students, ensuring they are well-prepared for future challenges. This year’s showcase is planned in an interactive format. Presenters will introduce a topic for up to 10 minutes and then lead a 20-minute conversation or Q&A about the topic.

Description: With a deep love for nature and his rich cultural heritage, folk singer Hermes Croatto carries the torch lit by his father, Tony Croatto, the legendary composer and icon of Puerto Rican folk music. More than simply honoring his father's legacy, Hermes seeks to re-energize folk music and captivate a new generation. His enchanting voice and beautiful lyrics have already earned him a special place in the hearts of Puerto Rican audiences. He has collaborated with renowned artists such as Eduardo Cabra, Rec808, and Sie7e, infusing his folk music with a contemporary sound for the modern age. Description: The Office of Academic Affairs, ASAP, and SSCU are excited to announce our Early Enrollment Ice Cream Fiesta! This event is designed to encourage more students to complete their summer and fall enrollments on campus conveniently. Students who complete their summer and fall enrollments and show their schedule to an advisor on campus on May 8 can receive an ice cream voucher from their advising unit (i.e., ASAP, Coaching Unit, College Discovery, CUNY Start/Math Start, etc). Students redeem their vouchers on May 8 with the Mr. Softee ice cream truck parked outside the Advisement Building. No vouchers will be distributed prior to or after May 8. 

Title: Anti-Asian Hate Awareness Conversation with the Asian American Federation

Description: Join the Asian American Federation for a virtual presentation to understand the extent and effects of anti-Asian violence, the ways it continues to show up in our lives, and resources you can connect with. We will also explore how we as individuals and a community have been impacted by this violence. This presentation will be conducted by Daphne Thammasilam, the Associate Director of Programs at the Asian American Federation (AAF), a nonprofit committed to raising the influence and well-being of the pan-Asian American community through research, advocacy, and programming. Daphne oversees AAF’s mental health programming, nonprofit support work, and their anti-Asian violence campaign Hope Against Hate. She has over 4 years of experience managing multi-million dollar programming for the immigrant community.

This will be a wonderful way to cap off another productive year of research conducted by the HRC ADELANTE/IDEAS awardees, whose innovative and transformative interventions continue to elevate Hostos to new educational heights and provide our students with incredible learning opportunities that will advance their academic and professional development. Description: The Radiologic Technology Industry Summit is the fourth in a series of industry summits hosted by President Daisy Cocco De Filippis and Community Advisory Council Chair Elias Alcántara. The series brings together business and academia in the areas of Allied Health Sciences, Community Health, Arts Administration, Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Financial Services to establish a forum for the development of relevant curriculum that serves the needs of the employers in our service area and prepares our students to become successful professionals with rewarding careers.
