MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | |
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
We are on the other side of midterms, contemplating the end of the semester and all of the work that still needs to be done. As I meet with students to discuss their progress, I am encouraged by their sense of hope and optimism while they meet so many other challenges and continue with resolve, persistence, and determination. All that you are doing, that you can do to support their progress, is greatly appreciated by them and by all of us, the Hostos family.
We have a powerful story to tell. Our work has again been recognized by the Aspen Institute’s selection of Hostos as one of the 150 community colleges of excellence out of over 1,000 who have been invited to compete for the 2025 prize. Our story is about maintaining an environment that is open, inclusive, and accepting of all; an environment where all can learn and engage with hope, respect, and love for others. As we begin to consider the blanket of winter that is soon to be covering us, the time is ripe to reflect on peace on earth and among all of us, every day, in every gesture, as we embrace having created and continuing to support a place where it is safe to learn and to work.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

“Sólo el colibrí te zumba en las mañanas”
By Marcos Reyes Davila
En Memoria de Juan Mari Brás
Querido don Juan
don Pepe Ferrer Canales,
¡Bendito seas!

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA)
PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTINEZ
| |
|
Hello Everyone,
Happy Friday! I hope that everyone has had moments in the week that bring some positivity towards whatever negativity you might be facing. This past week we had such amazing turnouts at events. The first was the Scotland Trip Debrief. During this event, students and faculty were able to see a video presentation and listen to remarks made by Hostos students about their August 2023 trip to Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. Previous Hostos students who had participated in the Festival came together to join the recent members of the company to share anecdotes.
Another great event was “Addressing Anti-Blackness at Hispanic-Serving Institutions” with keynote speaker Jasmine Haywood, Ph.D. This conference provided an opportunity for collaboration as well as development among students, educators, and administrators from all backgrounds. Attendees were able to share what they learned and plan the next actions to continue the work on their campuses.
SGA held its 2023 Fall Assembly, where students and faculty were able to join the Association as they gave Hostos an overview of what has been accomplished, those initiatives that are currently underway, and those that are on the horizon. We were fortunate to be joined by Vice President La Toro Yates from Student Development and Enrollment Management.
Once again, I would like to remind students that the SGA is sponsoring 18 scholarships of $500 each. There are six merit-based, six need-based, and six hardship scholarships. All scholarships have been posted on the Scholarships website: https://hostos.academicworks.com/. There are many other scholarships on the website. As I always say to all students, please use the resources that Hostos has to offer, as they are put in place for all of us. Take advantage!
Another reminder to all students: Please check your Hostos email. It is very important that all students check their email at least once a day. Hostos sends out many events every day that you might find interesting, so please be on the lookout.
There are two major events taking place soon. The first is Taco Transfer Tuesday on November 14. During this event, students can speak about their transfer plans to a 4-year college representative while also enjoying a taco. Another major event is the SGA/PTK/SLA Thanksgiving Giveaway on Tuesday, November 21. In partnership with One Stop, the SGA, along with officers of the Phi Theta Kappa-Alpha Kappa Tau Chapter (PTK) and members of the Hostos Student Leadership Academy (SLA), will distribute bags of holiday supplies to students on campus for the Thanksgiving holiday. Keep an eye out for a registration link.
As always, I hope that everyone can make time to attend upcoming activities. I'd like to end with a quote:
You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it. – Maya Angelou
Regards,
Dainma Martínez

Hostos Rides in the 2023 Tour De Bronx!
On Sunday, October 22, members of the Hostos community rode in the Tour De Bronx bike ride, the largest free bike ride in New York City. The Hostos group included tour veterans and first-timers, but all enjoyed it. Eugenio María de Hostos t-shirts were generously provided by the Office of the President so our riders could represent the college in style.
Described as an unforgettable adventure, our Hostos community members rode through the borough on bike, including underneath the Hostos Bridge on the Grand Concourse, through the South Bronx, along nature trails and waterfront parks, including Roberto Clemente State Park, Woodlawn Cemetery and Orchard Beach, culminating in a celebratory festival for riders at the Botanical Garden.
Riding with friends is always fun, and what better way to see the Bronx?
Congratulations to all of our Hostos riders who participated!

Veterans Day
On November 11, we celebrate and recognize the bravest of our citizens: the many people who have served or continue to serve in our military and as first responders to protect our safety, freedom, and liberty. Veterans Day honors those who honor our country with its highest form of service. To all our servicemembers, Hostos expresses our enduring debt of gratitude for everything you have done, and continue to do, on behalf of this country and to your respective communities. “My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place — police, firefighters, and members of our armed forces.” – Sidney Sheldon, Writer.

HOVA Veterans Day Statement
By SFC Ricardo García, Hostos Veterans Coordinator
As Veterans Day is upon us, we celebrate this holiday in keeping with the true spirit of gratitude that we continue honoring all of our Veterans. I ask that you all join me in remembrance for those who have passed away during their service to the United States, may we always keep uppermost in our minds those departed brave men and women who have answered the nation’s call to arms and have, unfortunately, made the ultimate sacrifice while in service to our beloved nation. We must never forget the high cost borne by so many in uniform so that we the people can enjoy the privileges afforded to us all by this powerful and bountiful nation, which God has so fittingly bestowed his blessings upon. Please enjoy this Veterans Day with your loved ones, and let us always remember to thank those who have selflessly served our nation. On behalf of Hostos Community College and the Office of Veterans Affairs, we wish you all a happy Veterans Day.
Congratulations SFC Ricardo Garcia of Veteran Affairs
Congratulations are in order to our very own Veterans Coordinator, SFC Ricardo García, US ARMY Retired, recognized and honored as one of the 2023 Veteran Champions of the Year in Higher Education in the October issue of G.I. Jobs.
The publication is a leading Military and Veteran publication recognized throughout the nation. The publication stated that the Veteran Champions recognized “go above and beyond to help student veterans and their families succeed in education.”
Ricardo García served in the Army for 15 years as Sergeant First Class (E-7). He states the following, “My life’s work is dedicated to the US military men and women. Those who served and continue to serve in our armed forces and their families. I work and advocate tirelessly to ensure that the necessary resources and services are available and provided to all current and former military members who have selflessly served our nation. The best part of my job is the privilege to do work that I am deeply passionate about. Seeing the success these veterans achieve after utilizing available resources gives me great pride. Furthermore, the experience I gained utilizing, working with, and participating in these veterans’ programs has been extremely beneficial because after personally using these resources, it gave me great insight and intimate knowledge of how each program works. This knowledge allows me to determine how I can best service the veteran. I have worked closely with a multitude of VSOs to secure the services and resources for veterans and am well acquainted with many existing VSO programs available to our veterans.”
Congratulations on this prestigious honor. We salute you, Sergeant Ricardo García!

Student Activities
Student Activities will hold its second Flag Installation Ceremony for the Fall 2023 semester on Wednesday, November 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room (C-312).
During this event, we will add the flag of Cape Verde to the C-Building Balcony of Flags. In addition, we will be replacing two of the flags that are presently installed. To begin, the Rainbow Flag will be replaced by the Progress Pride Flag. The reason for this is that since its creation in 2018, the flag has slowly been embraced by the LGBTQ community as a newer, more inclusive symbol of pride. The second flag that will be replaced is the Puerto Rican flag. In its place, we will install the revolutionary Puerto Rican flag, which uses light blue as opposed to dark blue in the triangle. We will provide more in-depth information about the reasons why the flags are being replaced during the course of the event.
Transfer Services: Alumni Spotlight
Jeremy Quiñones graduated from Hostos in June 2020 with a Liberal Arts degree. He transferred to Lehman College to pursue social work. His goal is to become a licensed social worker and potentially work at a higher education institution.
His advice for transfer students is: “I would say refine your goals as much as you can and create a thoughtful plan around whatever your career may be trying to pursue. Sometimes the path ahead is not as straightforward as we may want it to be, but ultimately your destination can still be the same, regardless of what obstacles may block your path.”

A POEM TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY
“Can You See The Pride In The Panther?”
By Tupac Shakur
Can You See the Pride In the Panther
As he grows in splendor and grace
Toppling obstacles placed in the way,
of the progression of his race.
Can You See the Pride In the Panther
as she nurtures her young all alone
The seed must grow regardless
of the fact that it is planted in stone.
Can You See the Pride In the Panthers
as they unify as one.
The flower blooms with brilliance,
and outshines the rays of the sun.
