El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, November 15, 2024 | Vol. 9, No. 12

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

Dear Students and Faculty,

As we continue to enjoy the autumn leaves and a gradual change in the weather, we reflect on how far along we have come in the semester. This is a time to stay focused on supporting students and one another as we strive for a successful completion of the term and plan for a spring semester of continued growth and retention of our students.

A few weeks back, we were invited by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona’s office to submit a proposal to be considered for the “Raising the Bar, Postsecondary Success Recognition Program 2025.”  Two hundred institutions were invited to participate in the selection — 100 baccalaureate institutions and 100 community colleges. I am happy to share that we have submitted our application and are waiting to hear the selection outcomes in the spring. Additionally, the process of considering our answer to this year’s PMP response to CUNY made us reflect on our culture at Hostos that could be distilled, as we indicate, “At the core of this resistance is love. The warmth and humanity communicated through daily interactions with staff and faculty are among the qualities that define Hostos. Our students feel love; they return seeking it when challenges arise at four-year partner institutions, and we continue supporting their success…

I wish you another week filled with hard work and hope as we prepare for the Thanksgiving break.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTÍNEZ

It’s Sunny… and Cold!

Hello, Hostos! I know the weather has been sunny yet breezy lately, but the SGA is here to support your needs. I understand we’re all going through challenging times, but remember, Hostos has resources available to help. Don’t hesitate to speak up; your voice is powerful, and it’s the key to getting the support you need.

Remember that Hostos offers counseling services for those who may feel overwhelmed or need someone to talk to. The Counseling Center provides a safe, confidential space to discuss any academic, personal, or emotional challenges. Professional counselors are ready to guide and support you, offering resources and strategies to help you through difficult times. Reach out — they’re here to help you stay focused, balanced, and supported throughout your journey.

Also, a reminder that the Baby Clothing Drive is still active! We’re collecting essential baby clothing to support Hostos families, especially those facing financial challenges. We’re accepting new or gently used clothing for babies aged newborn to 4T, including onesies, pajamas, socks, bibs, and warm layers. This drive is a wonderful chance for our campus community to come together and support parents in need. Every donation counts, no matter the size! You can find clearly labeled drop boxes in Allied Health, room A-307; Early Childhood Education, room A-107; and the SGA President's office, room C-534. Drop-off times are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Let’s make a positive impact by helping provide comfort and care for the next generation in our community!

Remember, your voice matters, and you’re not alone here at Hostos. There is always someone ready to support you.

I leave you with these words: “La oportunidad de llegar, tú verás si te montas en ella. Agárrate fuerte y ya no te sueltes.” (Once you get the opportunity to make it, you go for it. Hold onto that and don’t let go) – Celia Cruz

Sincerely,

Dainma Martínez

Virtual Student Employment Session Provides Information on Available Opportunities

To provide Hostos students with vital information on how to apply for part-time job opportunities and guidance for international students, Director Sofia Oviedo and IVP Althea Sterling hosted a virtual student employment information session that brought together a wonderful team of Hostos staff representing various departments. This session showcased various on-campus employment/internship opportunities available through the Career Services Office, Financial Aid Federal Work-Study, Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus, Human Resources (Hostos part-time positions), Title V Peer Mentors, Supplemental Instruction Mentors, Transfer Services Peer Mentors, and CUNY-wide internship programs. Staff provide detailed guidance on the types of positions available, pay rates, maximum work hours allowed, and how to apply for the various opportunities. This was truly a “manos a la obra” effort, and kudos to all the department representatives who provided this vital information to our students!

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT (OIERA)

Submitted by AJ Stachelek, Ed.D.

The Importance of English and Mathematics Gateway Courses for Student Success

As discussed in a previous El Semanario post, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Assessment is engaged in research as part of the College Completion Innovation Fund Grant project titled “Learning from Student Decision-making Patterns to Improve Degree Program Completion and Student Engagement.” While our research focuses on the course-taking patterns for the degree programs with the highest enrollment, such as Business Management AS and Early Childhood Education AAS, the research model can be expanded to look at results more broadly across all programs. This post, for example, presents data about cohorts of students across all majors who graduated in three years (150% completion rate) between 2018 and 2023. More specifically, the data is about the students’ first-year Gateway English and Gateway Mathematics Required Common Core course completion.

The research model analyzes course-taking data for six cohorts of First Time Freshmen (Fall 2015 through Fall 2020) and aggregates the data to observe patterns across the semesters during which they were enrolled at Hostos. This includes completion of gateway English and mathematics during their first academic year.

Based on this analysis, in their first academic year of the 1275 three-year graduating students:

  • 77% completed ENG 110
  • 73% completed ENG 111
  • 59% completed the non-STEM gateway mathematics course
  • 16% completed the typical entry-level STEM gateway mathematics course (MAT 150)

This analysis shows that a large percentage of three-year graduates achieve these milestones early in their academic trajectory. These courses likely support their learning in subsequent courses, providing students with a solid foundation in communication and quantitative reasoning skills. What remains unclear is whether the completion of these courses is indicative of the students’ college readiness to succeed in these courses or if these courses helped prepare them to be successful in college courses. Across the cohorts, there were variations of how Hostos delivered developmental education that makes it difficult to answer such questions.

Future analysis may enable me to explain how these results intersect with college readiness and placement. Nevertheless, the importance of early success in these courses remains strongly correlated with success in graduation (which implies a correlation with retention!). For this reason, we (advisors, faculty, and staff) should continue supporting students enrolling and successfully completing these courses as soon as possible.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

On November 20, we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance — a somber occasion to honor those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence, recognize those who have survived all forms of anti-transgender violence, and to raise awareness about the harassment, discrimination, and violence that transgender people continue to experience. Hostos reiterates its commitment to promoting safety and inclusion for transgender individuals as we continue to improve lives and enrich communities as an educational agent for change. It is important to treat one other with dignity and respect (including using each individual’s personal pronoun of choice), no matter your personal beliefs, and to promote a sense of belonging, acceptance and inclusivity.

Registration for ACUE Cohort 3: Effective Online Teaching Practices is Open!

Hostos and the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) are partnering to bring faculty and staff the high-quality and research-backed professional learning course, “Effective Online Teaching Practices.”

Through an engaging learning design and guided by expert facilitation, course takers will learn practices that can be implemented with students right away. These evidence-based practices have been shown to increase student retention, strengthen belonging and achievement, and close equity gaps. ACUE’s courses are consistently rated as engaging and relevant by faculty and staff nationwide and lead to the only nationally recognized Certificate in Effective Teaching Practice Framework, endorsed by the American Council on Education.

At the end of Fall 25, faculty who complete the cohort-based program earn a nationally recognized Certificate in Effective College Instruction, the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE). Each faculty member who completes the training will also receive $500 and be recognized at a pinning ceremony.

Applications due December 6. More info here.

POEMS FOR THE COMMUNITY

“Let America Be America Again”

By Langston Hughes

Let America be America again.

Let it be the dream it used to be.

Let it be the pioneer on the plain

Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—

Let it be that great strong land of love

Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme

That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty

Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,

But opportunity is real, and life is free,

Equality is in the air we breathe.

Date | Time: Thursday, November 21, 2024 | 9:30 - 11 AM

Location: B-501

Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century — and she continues the fight to this day... With unprecedented access to this intensely private mother of 11, Peter Bratt’s film “Dolores” chronicles Huerta’s life from her childhood in Stockton, California to her early years with the United Farm Workers, from her work with the headline-making grape boycott launched in 1965 to her role in the feminist movement of the ’70s, to her continued work as a fearless activist. Featuring interviews with Gloria Steinem, Luis Valdez, Angela Davis, her children and more, “Dolores” is an intimate and inspiring portrait of a passionate champion of the oppressed and an indomitable woman willing to accept the personal sacrifices involved in committing one’s life to social change. There will be a discussion before and after the screening.
