El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

Thanksgiving is upon us and time to reflect about family and our world family is a priority. I hope you get to enjoy breaking bread with your loved ones and to renew energies for the last push. The last few weeks of classes and preparation for finals and term papers will engage our time.  As you do that, don’t forget to work with students to pre-register for next semester, to support their completion of their studies this semester and to engage with hope on the next steps towards a better future.

Let us not forget as well to think of our Native American brothers and sisters, their exemplary contributions, and their trials and tribulations. The first Thanksgiving was intended to thank them for their kindness. Let us not forget how unkindly they have been treated over the years, and contribute in our deeds and words to world hope, not fear; world kindness, not hatred. Love and hope begin at home.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

A POEM TO HONOR NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

“Remember”

By Joy Harjo

Remember the sky that you were born under,

know each of the star’s stories.

Remember the moon, know who she is.

Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the

strongest point of time. Remember sundown

and the giving away to night.

Remember your birth, how your mother struggled

to give you form and breath. You are evidence of

her life, and her mother’s, and hers.

Remember your father. He is your life, also.

Remember the earth whose skin you are:

red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth

brown earth, we are earth.

Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their

tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,

listen to them. They are alive poems.

Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the

origin of this universe.

Remember you are all people and all people

are you.

Remember you are this universe and this

universe is you.

Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.

Remember language comes from this.

Remember the dance language is, that life is.

Remember.

MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTINEZ

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is having a shining Friday and that this week has brought positivity toward whatever negativity you are experiencing!

This past week, as always, we’ve had some amazing turnouts. The first was a discussion on the latest novel, “The Laughter,” by author, journalist, and professor Dr. Sonora Jha. Students and faculty were able to come together and have the opportunity to get questions answered about the book, as well as having the good fortune of Dr. Jha signing the book.

Our wonderful SGA and Transfer Services had a fantastic collaboration called “Taco Transfer Tuesday.” So many students came around to mingle and discuss their 4-year transfer plans! For their part, the Black Student Union had their meet and greet of the semester, a beautiful event during which students came around to speak about what Black power is.

As of November 15, we updated two of our flags: the Puerto Rican flag and the LGBTQ+ flag. This is the first time that flags have been replaced at the College. The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Bronx Council on the Arts, had an amazing opening for “Born In The Bronx,'' an exploration of the origins and growth of Hip Hop, a global phenomenon that began in the South Bronx in the 1970s. Johan Kugelberg and Joe Conzo, Jr. assembled a remarkable collection of images and artifacts.

Next week, on Tuesday, November 21, there will be another huge event: the SGA/PTK/SLA Thanksgiving Giveaway.  The SGA, in collaboration with Hostos One Stop, will give bags of holiday items to students on campus for the Thanksgiving holiday. Officials of the Phi Theta Kappa-Alpha Kappa Tau Chapter (PTK) and members of the Hostos Student Leadership Academy (SLA) will also participate. Keep an eye out for a link to register.

I would like to remind students once again that the SGA is supporting eighteen scholarships valued at $500 each. There are six merit-based scholarships, six need-based scholarships, and six hardship awards. All scholarships are now available on the Scholarships page: Our Opportunities - Hostos Community College Scholarships (academicworks.com). There are several additional scholarships available on the website.  As I often tell many students, please use the tools that Hostos has to offer since they are there for all of us. Take advantage of this opportunity!

As always, I hope that everyone will be able to attend our future events. I would like to conclude with a quotation:

Life is short. People are not easy to know. They're not easy to know, so if you don't tell them how you feel, you're not going to get anywhere, I feel. – Nina Simone

Sincerely,

Dainma Martínez

Strategic Plan Goal 4: Commitment to Foreign Language Competencies

The 2023-28 Hostos Strategic Plan Goal 4, Strategy 4 commits us to “[m]easure and develop foreign language and tech competencies across majors,” recognizing that both foreign language and tech competencies significantly improve students’ employability across all sectors. Several efforts are supporting foreign language competencies, which many of our students develop during their time at the College and obtain before coming to us:

  • Spanish for heritage speakers is well-established at Hostos, and, in Fall 2023, French for heritage speakers is undergoing the curriculum approval process.

  • The Office of School/College Partnerships is finalizing a three-college (Hostos, Bronx CC, and Lehman) partnership to offer high school English Language Learners (ELLs) a pipeline to college that includes ESL and English composition. This is in addition to the well-established SIELP (Summer Intensive English Language Program) offered by OSCP.

  • In support of Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), CUNY is forming a multi-campus committee to evaluate the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB), which is currently offered to high school students across New York State. The aim is to award credit for the Seal, and to allow students to place into higher-level foreign language courses at Hostos and other CUNY colleges.

A next step will be led by the Career Services Office: identifying industry-specific foreign language requirements and recommendations and communicating these to faculty, advisors, and students.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

On November 20, we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance — a somber occasion to honor those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence, recognize those who have survived all forms of anti-transgender violence, and to raise awareness about the harassment, discrimination, and violence that transgender people continue to experience. Hostos reiterates its commitment to promoting safety and inclusion for transgender individuals as we continue to improve lives and enrich communities as an educational agent for change. It is important to treat one other with dignity and respect (including using each individual’s personal pronoun of choice), no matter your personal beliefs, and to promote a sense of belonging, acceptance and inclusivity.

A POEM TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY

“I Cry”

By Tupac Shakur

Sometimes when I'm alone

I Cry,

Cause I am on my own.

The tears I cry are bitter and warm.

They flow with life but take no form

I Cry because my heart is torn.

I find it difficult to carry on.

If I had an ear to confiding,

I would cry among my treasured friend,

but who do you know that stops that long,

to help another carry on.

The world moves fast and it would rather pass by.

Then to stop and see what makes one cry,

so painful and sad.

And sometimes…

I Cry

and no one cares about why.

Cafeteria Vendor Search Update

Hostos, LaGuardia Community College, and Bronx Community College are working on a collective RFP for the Cafeteria Food Operation. The Procurement Directors from each college recognized that input from representatives of college constituents is essential to the development of an RFP that captures the needs and priorities of the campus communities. To that end, Hostos has formed a Food Service Committee to become involved in the process. The committee is comprised of two student representatives from the SGA, one of whom is Brian Carter, Assistant Dean of Student Life Johanna Gomez, and Professor Charles Drago.

As one of their first steps, the trio of Procurement Directors is developing a survey for their campuses with input from their respective food service committees. The survey will be distributed to the college community in late November. A notification will be sent out once it is ready.

Three vending machines have been placed inside the Cafeteria dining space. The coffee, snack, and soda machines were activated on Monday, November 13. You can now conveniently get beverages and snacks while you’re eating, socializing, or studying in the dining area. All three machines accept credit/debit cards as well as cash. A Farmer’s Fridge will be installed at a later date in front of the Cafeteria.

Open Enrollment Reminder

The annual health benefits open enrollment period is from November 1, 2023, through November 30, 2023. Changes made during the open enrollment will take effect on January 1, 2024. Employees who do NOT wish to make any changes to their current plan do NOT need to do anything.

If you are considering making changes to your health benefits plan/options, you may review the Benefits Open Enrollment materials here.

All required forms must be completed and returned to Hostos’ Human Resources no later than November 30, 2023.

Spotlight on Students Transitioning from CEWD to Degree Programs: Education Department

Two Community Health Worker Credit Articulation Agreements

The Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD), the Division of Academic Affairs, and the Education Department established two credit articulation agreements that grant up to 9 credits to students who complete CEWD’s Community Health Worker (CHW) certificate and enroll in either the AS in Community Health or the AAS in Aging & Health Studies. CEWD alumni who complete the CHW certificate program can receive credit for Introduction to Community Health/HLT 110 (three credits); Interpersonal Relations/HLT 103 (three credits); and Medical Terminology/HLT 124 (three credits). To date, six (6) students have received college credits through these agreements.

Student Spotlight

Kacey Witter was already enrolled in the A.S. degree program in Community Health at Hostos when she decided to accelerate her academic progress by also completing CEWD’s CHW certificate. Ms. Witter earned nine (9) college credits upon completing the certificate, which helped her realize her goal — to graduate a semester early. She graduated in Spring 2023 with a 3.9 GPA.

Child Development Associate Credential Credit Articulation Agreement

CEWD and the Education Department established a credit articulation agreement that grants up to six credits to students who complete CEWD’s Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and enroll in the AAS in Early Childhood Education. CEWD alumni who complete the CDA credential can receive credit for Child Development/EDU 116 (three credits) and Field Experience in Early Childhood Education I/EDU 113 (3 credits). To date, three students have received college credits through this agreement.

CEWD Helps Early Childhood Education Degree Students Earn Industry-Recognized Credentials

To help support the Education Department’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) degree students, CEWD began offering ECE students the following Teacher Assistant certificates at no cost to them: Dignity for All Students Act, School Violence Prevention, Training in the Needs of Students with Autism, and Training in the Recognition and Report of Child Abuse and School Violence Prevention. These certificates ensure ECE degree students are eligible for employment with the NYC Department of Education upon graduating from Hostos. Since FY 2019, 302 ECE degree students have participated in one or more of CEWD’s Teacher Assistant Certificates.

We would like to thank the Education Department for partnering with CEWD to make these opportunities available to students. It has been a pleasure collaborating with them.

The Semanario will be going on a brief pause for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return on December 8, 2023.
