MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As I write these brief words, I reflect on recent conversations with our students about our mid-point assessment of progress in our studies. Diligent work continues, engaging a wide-ranging representation of colleagues in so many areas.  All are to be thanked for the goodwill and the important work which will continue throughout the academic year.  Mil gracias.

The fall continues with celebrations of the season which include many opportunities to rejoice about being human in the company of all our brothers and sisters in the human family.  Let hope, generosity and engagement continue to guide your work as our path forward together makes progress.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

A POEM TO WELCOME PUERTO RICAN HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS

“A La Mujer Borrinqueña”

By Sandra María Esteves

My name is Maria Cristina

I am a Puerto Rican woman born in el barrio

Our men...they call me negra because they love me

and in turn I teach them to be strong

I respect their ways

inherited from our proud ancestors

I do not tease them with eye catching clothes

I do not sleep with their brothers and cousins

although I`ve been told that this is a liberal society

I do not poison their bellies with instant chemical foods

our table holds food from the earth and sun

My name is Maria Cristina

I speak two languages broken into each other

but my heart speaks the language of people

born in oppression

I do not complain about cooking for my family

because abuela taught me that woman is the master of fire

I do not complain about nursing my children

because I determine the direction of their values

I am the mother of a new age of warriors

I am the child of a race of slaves

I teach my children how to respect their bodies

so they will not o.d. under the stairway`s shadow of shame

I teach my children to read and develop their minds

so they will understand the reality of oppression

I teach them with discipline...and love

so they will become strong and full of life

My eyes reflect the pain

of that which has shamelessly raped me

but my soul reflects the strength of my culture

My name is Maria Cristina

I am a Puerto Rican woman born in el barrio

Our men..they call me negra because they love me

and in turn I teach them to be strong

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA)

PRESIDENT

Hello Everyone,

I would like to start off by wishing you a happy November. I hope everyone had a festive Halloween celebration. In the month of October, Hostos was able to celebrate so many wonderful events. For example, the blessing of the pets to honor Saint Francis and nature, with blessings given by our Campus Minister, El Padre Sheehan. We also had an amazing bachata dance class sponsored by Health and Wellness. The Public Policy and Law Unit had a beautiful event to talk about immigration rights and protections. The SGA’s collaboration with Urban Unity and many other clubs for our costume party was a huge success. Over 150 students came out to enjoy a night where faculty and students “monster mashed.” Finally, our recent event for honoring distinguished Latina leaders was such a powerful moment in which these pioneers came together to honor each other.

We at Hostos understand students' concerns over the cafeteria being closed. We at the SGA are working as fast as we can to provide what we, as students, require. As of now, we are in the process of finding a new CUNY food vendor. Soon the cafeteria will be back, and we will all be able to support it.

I would like to remind everyone that the SGA is sponsoring 18 scholarships of $500 each. There are six merit-based, six need-based, and six hardship scholarships. All scholarships have been posted on the Hostos website: Our Opportunities - Hostos Community College Scholarships (academicworks.com). Please apply and take advantage of all the resources Hostos has to offer.

I hope that everyone can take some time and participate in upcoming events, and hopefully to interact with me and get to know me better. My office is always open to students and staff. I would like to leave off with a quote:

“If you're gonna be somebody, you need to be a leader, not a follower. Be strong-minded, the impossible is always possible.” - Selena Quintanilla.

Regards,

Dainma Martínez

Perkins Mandate and Expanding Opportunities for “Special Populations” at Hostos

The Perkins Grant, a federal funding program managed by the state that supports career and technical education (CTE) includes among its goals the expansion of opportunities for “special populations.” Among the special populations identified by Perkins is “youth with a parent who is a member of the armed forces and is on active duty,” a population served by Hostos Office of Veterans Affairs (HOVA).

HOVA, led by Director Ricardo García, is a unit housed in the Division of Student Development and Enrollment Management (SDEM). The office serves individuals who self-identify as veterans, active service members, and members of military-involved families. Currently, ~60 students are served by HOVA, or ~1.25% of our matriculated enrollment. This rate is surely an undercount, and HOVA communicates regularly with students to share information about the resources offered by the office.

In the 2024 Perkins application, we included a goal to expand support for “youth with a parent who is a member of the armed forces and is on active duty,” as well as other cohorts served by HOVA. As a first step, a meeting will be convened in November with internal partners (including representatives from SDEM, OAA, and DIA) to review what is in place and where we have opportunities to grow capacity, as well as an opportunity for Mr. García to share information as it relates to various stages of the student experience (recruitment, admission, progression/retention, completion/transfer/employment).

The initial meeting will be followed up by a second one in the spring. External partners will be invited to discuss strategies to strengthen and build partnerships with resources outside of Hostos to better serve this special population, identify activities to be supported by Perkins, and thereby increase access to Hostos.

National Native American Heritage Month

November is federally recognized as National Native American Heritage Month. During this month, Native North Americans and Tribal citizens are honored and celebrated for their rich and varied cultures, traditions, history, and societal contributions. This month gives us the opportunity to become more educated about Native Americans and Tribal citizens, increase our knowledge of unique challenges faced by this population, and better understand how historical trauma (such as colonization and genocide) has impacted Native Americans. As the original inhabitants of North America, Native Americans and Tribal citizens are both members of U.S. society and have been integral to its development.

Additionally, November 24 is recognized as Native American Heritage Day. In 2009, President Barack Obama signed The Native American Heritage Day Resolution, designating the Friday after Thanksgiving as Native American Heritage Day and stating: “I encourage every American to join me in observing Native American Heritage Day…It is also important for all of us to understand the rich culture, tradition, and history of Native Americans and their status today and to appreciate the contributions that First Americans have made and will continue to make to our Nation.”

Late Start

Ten Late Start sections were opened for the Fall 2023 semester. Eighty-one percent (81%) of seats were filled based on 244 enrollments across 301 available seats. Late Start is a concept that allows students who have not enrolled by the first day of classes in a regular semester to enroll in classes that start later. The time frame for Late Start class sessions is slightly longer than regular semester class sessions. Students enrolled in Late Start sections finish their coursework at the same time as students enrolled in the regular 15-week semester. Academic departments that participated in this pilot included Behavioral and Social Sciences, Education, and English. Courses from the following disciplines were offered: community health, early childhood education, English, political science, and sociology.

Succeed@Hostos Mid-Term Alert Progress Survey

The October 2023 Mid-Term Alert Progress Survey brings attention to students taking hard-to-pass courses. Hard-to-pass courses are identified by 25% or more of students, historically earning grades below C, including W grades and incomplete grades. By completing the progress survey for their students, faculty have promoted and connected students with the success networks that are available on campus to help them. Advisors, service providers, and students have received notifications related to the student's academic performance and are called to engage in activities that help keep students on track and successful. Mid-term progress surveys were open through October 30.

More on the Blackboard Organization “Forum for Issues and Trends in Education (FITE)”

OAA has created a Blackboard organization named “Forum for Issues and Trends in Education (FITE).” All faculty and staff are welcome to self-enroll in the organization and make use of the resources and discussion board conversations. The first open forum topic regarded Artificial Intelligence, and there are discussion boards available for the community to engage with each other. Other open forum topics are to be added regarding the COACHE faculty preferences survey response data and the transition to Brightspace.

"What's Going On"

Mother, mother

There's too many of you crying

Brother, brother, brother

There's far too many of you dying

You know we've got to find a way

To bring some lovin' here today, yeah

Father, father

We don't need to escalate

You see, war is not the answer

For only love can conquer hate

You know we've got to find a way

To bring some lovin' here today

Cybersecurity Reminders

Cybersecurity Awareness Month has come to a close, but don’t let your awareness lapse. As you polish off those remaining Halloween treats, please remember cybersecurity is not just IT’s responsibility, it is the entire community’s responsibility. Everyone is encouraged to continue practicing these safety tips:

1) Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your accounts and devices. MFA is an additional security step for proving your identity beyond just your password when you log in to an account or device. Different forms of MFA can include:

  • Answering security question(s) that you have selected/created during the account set up.
  • The account may send you a code or PIN via text or email that you have to enter.
  • Biometric identifiers like facial recognition or fingerprint scan.
  • Using an authenticator app to approve your sign-in.
  • Possession of a separate physical item, like a key fob, that verifies your identity.

2) Use strong passwords and a password manager.

  • Each of your accounts should be protected with its own unique password. “Unique” means your passwords should not look alike — don’t reuse passwords or add a single character (symbol, letter, or number) to a previous password.
  • Each unique password should be long; NCA recommends at least 12 characters.
  • Each unique password should be a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, number, and special characters. Some websites and apps may even allow spaces.
  • Use a password manager to manage all of your unique passwords, which then allows you to only remember one password. (And keep your password manager safe by securing it with MFA.)

3) Ensure your software is up-to-date.

  • Check for software updates regularly. Keeping your software current keeps your systems functioning at their peak and can reduce the likelihood of cyberattacks.
  • Get the updates directly from the software developer. Be cautious of pop-ups that say you should update your software as they may contain malware or send you to click through an unsecured website. Use a reputable pop-up blocker to limit scammers.
  • Set up automatic updates if possible so you don’t have to remember or check for them.

4) Recognize and report phishing attempts.

  • Review messages and the sender’s email address carefully — does the message seem odd? Is the email address or sender name not one you recognize?
  • Take the time to think before you click.
  • Reach out to IT if you think the message is suspicious and/or a possible phishing attempt.
  • Change your password if you have experienced a cyberattack.

Incorporating the above tools and practices can significantly decrease your chances of becoming a cybercrime victim. You can find out more information on how to keep yourself safe on the Hostos IT Cyber Security Awareness webpage and on the CUNY CIS Information Security site.
