El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, November 7, 2025 | Vol. 11, No. 11

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

We are on the other side of midterms, contemplating the end of the semester, and all of the work that still needs to be done. As I meet with students to discuss their progress, I am encouraged by their sense of hope and optimism as they meet so many other challenges and continue with resolve, persistence and determination. All that you are doing, that you can do to support their progress, is greatly appreciated by them and by all of us, the Hostos family.

I have received multiple thank you notes about the warm reception colleagues received when they attended the Chancellor’s State of the University Address at Hostos. Thank you all who were involved in creating such a welcoming environment. It was a proud moment for CUNY and for Hostos. We have a powerful story to tell. Our story is about maintaining an environment that is open, inclusive, accepting of all; an environment where all can learn and can engage with hope, respect and love for others. As we begin to consider the blanket of winter that is soon to be covering us, the time is ripe to reflect on peace on earth and among all of us, every day, in every gesture, as we embrace having created and continuing to support a place where learning and kindness thrive, for all.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEM

This World Is Not Conclusion

By Emily Dickinson

This World is not Conclusion.

A species stands beyond-

Invisible as Music-

But positive as Sound-

It beckons, and it baffles-

Philosophy-don’t know-

And through a Riddle, at the last-

Sagacity, must go-

To guess it, puzzles scholars-

To gain it, Men have borne

Contempt of Generations

And Crucifixion, shown-

Faith slips-and laughs and rallies-

Blushes, if any see-

Plucks as a twig of Evidence-

And asks a Vane, the way-

Much Gesture, from the Pulpit-

Strong Hallelujahs roll-

Narcotics cannot still the Tooth

That nibbles at the soul-

Hostos Research Center Welcomes New HRC Scholars Cohort

The Hostos Research Center (HRC) is pleased to announce that the Hostos Research Scholars Program has selected a new cohort of HRC Scholars for the 2025-26 academic year. The initiative was launched in Spring 2025 in collaboration with the CUNY Graduate Center and engaged a cohort of 22 students in mentored research experiences provided by 11 Hostos faculty and six PhD students. This wonderful collaboration yielded many positive results as our students increased their understanding of the research process and development of new skills and established affirming and supportive relationships with their mentors. Last spring all the HRC Scholars made oral poster presentations detailing their progress and lessons learned at the HRC Scholars Mini Conference. We are excited to welcome a new cohort of 15 HRC Scholars this academic year, along with our dedicated Hostos faculty and a new cohort of PhD students from the Graduate Center. We look forward to the new research developments that will emerge through this collaborative mentorship journey. We look forward to celebrating their accomplishments in the spring at the next HRC Scholars Mini Conference to be held in May.

On November 11, we celebrate and recognize the bravest of our citizens: the many people who have served or continue to serve in our military and as first responders to protect our safety, freedom, and liberty. Veterans Day honors those who honor our country with its highest form of service. To all our servicemembers, Hostos expresses our enduring debt of gratitude for everything you have done, and continue to do, on behalf of this country and to your respective communities. “My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place — police, firefighters, and members of our armed forces.” – Sidney Sheldon, Writer.

Honors Program News

Submitted by OAA Fellow Kristopher Burrell

On October 20, three Hostos Honors Program students, Beranny Matos, Veronica Rosa, and Jorge Sanz, along with Honors Program Committee member, Professor Catherine Monchik, attended the Global MindED: Inclusive Success Network Conference hosted at the United Nations. The conference is intended to “connect students with internships, apprenticeships, experiences, and job opportunities, equipping them with personal and professional knowledge to fulfill their ambitions.” The opportunity to attend the event was largely the result of connections Jorge Sanz made while attending another prestigious conference, the Concordia Summit hosted by the Libra Group, a contributor to the Hostos Honors Program, back in September of this year. Jorge’s networking skills resulted in the chance for three students and a mentor to attend Global MindED free of charge.

The students enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to attend the conference. Beranny said that attending the meeting was both “eye opening and encouraging.” She “was able to learn from a variety of leaders, educators, and peers who are all committed to making education and employment possibilities more inclusive and approachable.” In addition to the informative and engaging seminars, the program attendees were able to get to know one another better and even inspired each other. Jorge made a positive impression on Beranny and the conference audience when asking a question of Dave Toole, Chairman of Outhink AI, in a panel titled, “Reshaping Education for an AI Driven Future,” when he disclosed that he had consulted ChatGPT to figure out what to ask him. Jorge, Beranny, and Veronica were able to meet Carol Carter, the Founder and CEO of Global MindED. She personally introduced Jorge to a number of leading professionals in attendance. It was a wonderful day for everyone.

The students hope to attend the Annual Global MindED Conference in Denver, in June 2026. We hope the opportunity can be secured, so our students can continue to build upon the connections they have been so proactive in making already.

Ms. Brown-Reynolds Upskill Journey From CHW Certificate Courses to Earning a Master’s Degree

When Ms. Brown-Reynolds joined the Community Health Worker (CHW) Program at Hostos Community College’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) in May 2023, she was ready to take her passion for helping others to the next level. By the time she completed the program in September 2023, she had gained not only new professional skills but also a renewed sense of purpose and direction for her career.

With a strong foundation already in place, a bachelor's degree in health services administration, Ms. Brown-Reynolds saw the CHW program as an opportunity to deepen her understanding of community engagement, public health systems, and the importance of advocacy. “The CHW program opened my eyes to the power of community connections and how critical communication is in serving diverse populations,” she shared.

Shortly after completing the program, Ms. Brown-Reynolds began working as an Eligibility Specialist II for the Department of Social Services (SNAP-CR Unit), where she plays a vital role in assisting individuals and families in accessing essential benefits and support services. Her dedication and strong work ethic quickly stood out — and in May 2025, she received a well-deserved raise, recognizing her continued growth and contributions to the department.

Continuing her academic journey, Ms. Brown-Reynolds enrolled in Lehman College’s Master of Science program in Organizational Leadership, where she balanced part-time graduate studies with full-time employment. In August 2025, she proudly earned her master’s degree, marking another major milestone in her journey of professional and personal achievement.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Brown-Reynolds credits the CHW program for helping her strengthen the professional and interpersonal skills that continue to serve her today. “The program motivated me to continue striving for excellence,” she said. “It gave me confidence to take on new challenges and to lead with purpose.”
