MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
|
Dear Students and Faculty,
As we consider this point in the semester, with midterms behind us and work ahead to ensure a successful end of the semester, this is a note to encourage thoughts and actions about next semester and the registration process that has already begun.
Enrollment has grown steadily over the past few semesters, with a small increase in FTE this semester based on the delays in the FAFSA application process. More than ever, everyone’s collaboration has been so much appreciated. The work done in academic departments and the steady growth in enrollment of continuing students has made all the difference. I know colleagues have begun to remind their students of the importance of early and thoughtful scheduling. Student success and perseverance are supported by thoughtful discussions of the next academic steps as the Spring 2025 semester is planned. Mil gracias!
If schedules permit it, I encourage students and colleagues to join activities at the College. This month, we have the opportunity to attend one of the performances of the latest play directed by Professor Ángel Morales, the Industry Summit on Education, and the Poetry and Peace gathering.
Thank you for the hope and collaboration.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

“Río Grande de Loíza”
By Julia de Burgos
y busca de mis ansias el íntimo secreto;
desde que alzome al mundo el pétalo materno;
contigo se bajaron desde las rudas cuestas,
a buscar nuevos surcos, mis pálidos anhelos;
prendida en lo más ancho de tu viajar eterno;
me estaré derramando para abrir surcos nuevos;
o si acaso, cansada de morder corazones,
me estaré congelando en cristales de hielo!
¡Río Grande de Loíza!… Azul. Moreno. Rojo.
Espejo azul, caído pedazo azul de cielo;
cada vez que la noche se te mete en el lecho;
Translation by Jack Agüeros
Rio Grande de Loiza!... Elongate yourself in my spirit
and let my soul lose itself in your rivulets,
finding the fountain that robbed you as a child
and in a crazed impulse returned you to the path.
Coil yourself upon my lips and let me drink you,
to feel you mine for a brief moment,
to hide you from the world and hide you in yourself,
to hear astonished voices in the mouth of the wind.
Dismount for a moment from the loin of the earth,
and search for the intimate secret in my desires;
confuse yourself in the flight of my bird fantasy,
and leave a rose of water in my dreams.
Rio Grande de Loiza!... My wellspring, my river
since the maternal petal lifted me to the world;
my pale desires came down in you from the craggy hills
to find new furrows;
and my childhood was all a poem in the river,
and a river in the poem of my first dreams.
Adolescence arrived. Life surprised me
pinned to the widest part of your eternal voyage;
and I was yours a thousand times, and in a beautiful romance
you awoke my soul and kissed my body.
Where did you take the waters that bathed
my body in a sun blossom recently opened?
Who knows on what remote Mediterranean shore
some faun shall be possessing me!
Who knows in what rainfall of what far land
I shall be spilling to open new furrows;
or perhaps, tired of biting hearts
I shall be freezing in icicles!
Rio Grande de Loiza!... Blue. Brown. Red.
Blue mirror, fallen piece of blue sky;
naked white flesh that turns black
each time the night enters your bed;
red stripe of blood, when the rain falls
in torrents and the hills vomit their mud.
Man river, but man with the purity of river,
because you give your blue soul when you give your blue kiss.
Most sovereign river mine. Man river. The only man
who has kissed my soul upon kissing my body.
Rio Grande de Loiza!... Great river. Great flood of tears.
The greatest of all our island’s tears
save those greater that come from the eyes
of my soul for my enslaved people.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTÍNEZ
|
Happy Fall Harvest
The air is crisp and the warmth of cozy sweaters has returned. It’s time to celebrate the harvest season! November brings a time of reflection, gratitude, and gathering together. As we embrace the beauty of fall, with its golden leaves and cool breezes, we’re also gearing up for the final stretch of the semester. Like farmers, it’s time to harvest the hard work we’ve put in throughout the year and keep growing! Your SGA is here to support you as we prepare for the final push toward finals. Let’s make this November a time of growth and gratitude, both in our studies and community!
I hope everyone continues with the Hostos pride as the semester wraps up! There are many new things to keep an eye out for. Something SGA is working on is charging stations! Many of us remain on campus for many hours at a time, and we may either not charge our phones fully or just not have our chargers with us. We are working on locations to have the stations put in place. Our goal is to make sure that everyone has convenient access to power so you can charge your devices and keep your focus on what matters most: your academic success. These charging stations will be placed in high-traffic areas, making it easier for students to recharge while on the go. SGA is committed to improving campus life, and this initiative is just one of the many ways we’re working to enhance your experience!
A heads up to all clubs and faculty who do wish to join. We will be hosting a Best Door/Room Holiday competition! So keep an eye out for the flyer to know more details! There will be first, second, and third prizes for the best-decorated door or room! We are putting so many events in place at SGA, clubs, and departments! Hostos will never have a moment of just nothing. We want everyone to be involved in some form or shape of any kind.
As we embrace the spirit of November, let’s remember that this month is an opportunity to reflect, give thanks, and continue making an academic and personal impact. Every challenge is a chance to strengthen our resolve, every moment of gratitude brings us closer, and every act of generosity helps build a more connected community. Whether you’re preparing for finals, contributing to our campus drives, or simply appreciating the beauty of the season, know that you are part of something bigger. Let’s keep lifting each other, celebrating our progress, and making this fall a time of achievement, unity, and growth. We’re in this together. Let’s make every moment of this harvest season count!
Sincerely,
Dainma Martínez

Veterans Day
On November 11, we celebrate and recognize the bravest of our citizens: the many people who have served or continue to serve in our military and as first responders to protect our safety, freedom, and liberty. Veterans Day honors those who honor our country with its highest form of service. To all our servicemembers, Hostos expresses our enduring debt of gratitude for everything you have done, and continue to do, on behalf of this country and to your respective communities. “My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place — police, firefighters, and members of our armed forces.” – Sidney Sheldon, Writer.

The Behavioral Sciences Unit Hosts Successful Liberal Arts Options Event
Submitted by Professor Ernest Ialongo, Chair of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department
The Behavioral Sciences Unit within the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department recently hosted its third Liberal Arts Options Event on Wednesday, October 30, in B-501. The event drew a significant crowd of over 70 students eager to explore the various behavioral sciences concentrations available to Liberal Arts majors.
The event offered students a comprehensive overview of the four key concentrations offered by the unit: Psychology, Psychology Research, Interdisciplinary Studies in Human Behavior and Social Institutions, and Social Work. Attendees received informative packages to guide their registration process. Notably, the event highlighted the seamless transfer opportunities to four-year institutions within the CUNY system. For example, because of an affiliation agreement, the Social Work concentration provides a direct pathway to Lehman College's B.A. in Social Work degree program, making it easier for students to continue their education and achieve their academic goals after graduating from Hostos. In addition, several students, who were already enrolled in the program, remained after the activity, and were assigned faculty mentors, on the spot.
Several esteemed faculty members were present to share their personal journeys to becoming psychologists and licensed social workers. These included Professor Marta Rivera (Unit Coordinator), Professor Oliver Crespo, Professor Antonios Varelas, Professor Kate Wolfe, Professor Karen Steinmayer, Professor Felipe Pimentel, and Professor Stacey Cooper. Their firsthand experiences offered students a unique perspective on the field.
To reach a broader audience, the Behavioral Sciences Unit plans to host a virtual version of this event on Monday, November 18, at 3:30 p.m., via Zoom. This online event will provide students with another opportunity to explore their academic options and connect with faculty members.

Special Message
As Veterans Day is upon us, we would like to take this opportunity to commemorate the service of our former military members who have answered their nation's call to serve and did so with distinction. We honor their service and recognize the sacrifice of those valiant men and women who have given so selflessly to our beloved nation. While we honor these men and women who have served we also like to especially thank those who continue to serve in our Armed Forces and keep us out of harm's way. We must continue to keep utmost in our mind the servicemembers' families. These loved ones who, alongside their servicemembers, have also had to sacrifice precious moments, holidays, and time away from each other that we as civilians all take for granted. May it be of some comfort to know that today and every day, we as a nation honor and salute their service to our country and us. We must always remember the cost assumed by our military members and their families while in uniform and for this commitment to our safety we owe these men and women a debt of gratitude for the many privileges that we enjoy and are afforded to us by this powerful and bountiful nation. Enjoy this Veterans Day with your loved ones, and always thank those who selflessly serve our country.

POEMS FOR THE COMMUNITY
“The Power of One”
By Ashish Ram
One song can spark a moment
One flower can wake the dream
One tree can start a forest
One bird can herald spring
One smile begins a friendship
One handclasp lifts a soul
One star can guide a ship at sea
One word can frame the goal
One vote can change a nation
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes out darkness
One laugh will conquer gloom
One step must start each journey
One word must start each prayer
One hope will raise our spirits
One touch can show you care
One voice can speak with wisdom
One heart can know what’s true
One life can make the difference
You see, it’s up to you!!
