Friday, October 10, 2025 | Vol. 11, No. 7 | | MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | | |
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
These are just a few words to say thank you and express my sincere appreciation for the good work in organizing and participating in meetings to celebrate our diversity and culture these past few weeks. I note in particular that there are three new flags, selected by our students, displayed in the C-Atrium: Antigua and Barbuda, Algeria and Togo. The Hostos family shines with the talent of some of our younger members. On October 7, we were delighted to welcome artist Kayleen Berry, a Puerto Rican artist originally from the Bronx, the daughter of proud father Public Safety Officer De Jesus. Just yesterday we held a very successful Golf Outing, raising more than $160,000 in student scholarships. Many more events on the academic side included an ACEN accreditation visit for Nursing, and Honors presentations by students. As the semester progresses, I also would like to extend good wishes for the midterm season.
I note that life is thriving at Hostos in the form of seeing so many of our students and colleagues engaged in social and academic interactions throughout the buildings. As autumn leaves begin to turn, we rejoice in having reached this level of beauty and maturity and we prepare for the peace that the holidays at the end of the semester will bring us all.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

Can Any Beauty in the World Match This?
By Hafiz, c.1320-1389
When the sun within speaks, when love
reaches out its hand and places it upon
another,
any power the stars and planets might have upon us,
any fears you can muster can become so rightfully insignificant.
What one heart can do for another heart,
is there any beauty in the world that can match this?
Brotherhood, sisterhood, humanity becomes the joy and the emancipation.

New NextGen Public Health Scholar Selected for 2025-26
It gives me great pleasure to announce that a new NextGen Public Health 2+2+2 Scholar has been selected for the 2025-26 academic year. Congratulations to Alicia James for this wonderful achievement! Alicia’s journey at Hostos began in the Community Health Worker certificate program offered through the Continuing Education and Workforce Development Division, which then led her to enroll in the associate in applied science degree program with a concentration in community health. Inspired by her past non-profit work experience and her personal trajectory as a caregiver to her father, Alicia will now have the financial support and resources of the NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program to achieve her goals. The program is a unique partnership between Hostos and Columbia University that prepares exemplary Hostos students for careers in public health and epidemiology. Alicia aspires to build a career in public health research and policy development to advance legislation and evidence-based services for older adults and the caregivers that support them in underserved communities. Alicia will graduate from Hostos in May 2026 and transfer next fall to the Columbia University School of General Studies where she is set to make great strides in advancing her education. In reflecting on the impact of this incredible opportunity, she shared, “I am deeply honored to be selected as a 2025-26 NextGen Public Health Scholar, an opportunity I could have never imagined. I am more determined than ever to complete my education and view this as a pivotal step toward advancing my career in human services. I plan to build on my past experiences and academic foundation to make a meaningful impact in public health, with a focus on aging populations and expanding access to mental health resources.”

Celebrating and Developing Multilingualism at Hostos
The Hostos Strategic Plan: Elevating Justice, Goal 4: Academic programs that balance intellectual growth and workforce preparedness, cites among five strategies, the “measure and develop[ment]” of “foreign language and technology competencies across majors.” The pairing of these two skill sets was intentional, since each aligns with career preparation and our institutional commitment to advancing socio-economic mobility (technology skills will be addressed at a later date).
A quick search on Indeed.com yielded >20K jobs in the New York metro region that require Spanish language skills, from RNs to paralegals, HR specialists, senior care specialists, outreach staff, communications directors, translators and interpreters, and teachers, and more. Customer service and hospitality jobs including flight attendants and tour guides, require or prefer multilingual competencies. Conversations with peers at four-year colleges about career preparation in law, business and health care among other fields confirm the value of multilingual competencies to employers — and the need to more loudly celebrate and market these skills.
At Hostos, English Language Learners, or ELLs, are 10.2% of total enrollment in Fall 2025. That is not far from the 12.2% of total enrollment in Fall of 2015. Among First-Time Freshmen (FTF), there are 50 (~5% of all FTFs) ELLs enrolled in ESL credit-bearing courses. An additional ~200 students are enrolled in pre-matriculation CLIP and a number of “high-level” ELLs are enrolled in pre-matriculation CUNY Start. The majority of our students speak a language other than English at home, and many have studied (in) a language other than English.
Hostos supports the development of multilingual competencies: In addition to courses in modern languages, a new model for awarding credit for prior learning (based on a placement test administered by faculty in the Modern Language Unit) will be reviewed by governance this fall. Credits earned for a two-course sequence anticipates the foreign language requirements in bachelor and graduate level degrees.
Spanish for Healthcare is offered at Hostos and at partner high schools; a version of the course in French is in development. The Education Department has developed a degree in Bilingual Education that will prepare students to teach in dual language and transitional education settings. The NYC Public Schools website lists more than 300 Dual Language and Transitional Language programs across the five boroughs; ELLs comprise 15% of the city’s K-12 population. The majority integrate English with Spanish, and there are programs in Haitian Kreyol, Polish, French, and Arabic, among others.
The invitation, then, is to integrate the development of multilingual competencies with existing and new curriculum to support career development and students’ academic pathways — and their participation in a polyglot, humanistic and global society.

LGBTQIA+ History Month
As we enter the month of October, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight that October is recognized as LGBTQIA+ History Month, which is an annual month-long observance of LGBTQIA+ history, rights, and related civil rights movements. LGBTQIA+ History Month emphasizes role models, builds community, represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community, and sends an important message to our campus community members about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of the LGBTQIA+ community in American history. For more information related to the LGBTQIA+ role models and figures that celebrate their achievements, please refer to the following link: Home | LGBTHistoryMonth.com.
Additionally, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight two days this month related to the celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community: October 11 is recognized as National Coming Out Day, and October 16 is recognized as International Pronouns Day. Hostos’ LGBTQIA+ Consortium, in collaboration with Rainbow Hostos and the Office of Compliance and Diversity, will be hosting an event on October 16 in celebration of International Pronouns Day, located in the Atrium between the A and C Buildings, between 1-3 p.m. Please join us and participate in procuring and wearing a button that displays your pronouns, encourages respect and recognition of an individual’s right to self-identify, and endeavors to make the use of personal pronouns more commonplace in our community.

The Grant Office celebrated Faculty Scholarly Achievements
Submitted by Dr. Kelba Sosa (Grants Office) and Dr. Nelson Nuñez-Rodríguez (OAA Fellow)
The Grants Office celebrated Hostos faculty scholarly achievements, specifically recognizing faculty members who secured PSC-CUNY grants in the 2024–25 cycle, with a celebratory luncheon on October 8, 2025. Interim Provost Dr. Andrea Fabrizio offered greetings that recognized the hard work of our faculty community and the ongoing support of the Grants Office. The event was part of the Grants Office’s effort to support the Office of Academic Affairs’ commitment to fostering an intellectual climate that nurtures faculty academic interests. In doing so, the division aligns its efforts with the Hostos 2024–29 Strategic Plan, focusing on supporting faculty research and grant development. The diverse faculty research agenda supported by PSC-CUNY funding represents strong evidence of our faculty’s commitment to advancing knowledge and elevating our shared dedication to teaching excellence and research, as outlined in the Division’s Academic Implementation Plan.
Advisement Update
Submitted by Director Sidd Mohammed (ASAP) and Director Jason Pelosi (SSCU)
The advising units in Academic Affairs include Accelerated Study in Associates Programs (ASAP) and Student Success Coaching Unit (SSCU). The advising units work with students to advance their steady progress towards degree completion. At this time of the semester, ASAP is focused on helping students meet their monthly engagement benchmarks and fully utilizing transportation and textbook benefits before the deadlines. The unit is also preparing to launch classroom visits this month in collaboration with faculty to strengthen student and faculty engagement. The Student Success Coaching Unit (SSCU) has prioritized having intentional conversations with first-time first-year students in regular meetings throughout their first term. These four meetings will focus on adapting to college, registration planning, academic progress at the mid-point and end of the semester. Finally, the advisor/faculty liaison model continues to bring advisors together with academic leaders to discuss degree requirements, advising challenges and address degree program changes as well as updates to advising trends and practices.
Hostos Online Education Committee
Submitted by Dr. Nelson Nuñez-Rodríguez (OAA Fellow) and Director Carlos Guevara (Educational Technology and Center for Teaching and Learning)
Under the leadership of the Interim Vice President and Provost for Academic Affairs, the Hostos Online Education Committee (HOEC) begins the 2025–26 academic year by analyzing the current institutional online learning landscape. The rapid growth of fully online students highlights the need to create new programs and courses, while also uncovering gaps and opportunities in how best to serve this population. Ensuring that online students have full access to all college resources is a top priority. Moving forward, the EdTech Office — working in collaboration with HOEC — will redesign the information and resources for online students available on the college website. Additionally, the committee will continue to explore ways to strengthen and integrate existing resources, with the goal of developing a comprehensive vision and identity for Hostos Online Learning. The HOEC is co-chaired by OAA Fellow Nelson Nunez-Rodriguez and Director of Educational Technology Carlos Guevara.

CUNYWork
You may have heard the term CUNYWork floating around — so what exactly is it? CUNYWork is our new cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, designed to support two major areas across the University: Human Resources and Finance. Powered by Workday, this system will help close existing functionality gaps, streamline system management, modernize our processes, boost efficiency, and support future growth.
With CUNYWork, all campuses will be able to manage HR, payroll, and finance operations within a single, unified platform. By bringing HR and Finance data together, we’ll gain a more complete and accurate picture, helping to ensure stronger compliance and clearer audit trails.
We wrapped up the Planning Phase this past spring, during which teams from CUNY Central and the campuses collaborated to discuss business processes and requirements. We’re now in the Architect & Configure Phase, where our development and CUNYWork teams are designing how Workday will support CUNY’s specific needs and workflows.
Stay tuned for more information as we move forward in the development of this exciting new system!
