El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, October 11, 2024 | Vol. 9, No. 7

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

As I write these words, I reflect on how much work has transpired. Midterms are practically here. Despite challenges, we continue to move forward, basking in the light of our own humanity, as Pablo Neruda would say.

We are coming to the close of activities for Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, Italian Heritage, and other observances honoring the Jewish holidays. That is just this month for the Hostos family. I give a special thank you to all of our colleagues for continued diligence and for the smiles that greet me and all who come to visit. A colleague from Medgar Evers College recently commented about the warmth she had experienced just walking down our corridors and meeting students and staff.

Enjoy the long weekend as we prepare for the second half of the term, student and academic support activities and advisement and pre-registration for winter and spring sessions. That being said, when you return, for those of you who are close to graduation: it is essential that thoughtful planning and advisement take place. Also, if you intend to continue your studies in a baccalaureate institution, please make every effort to apply early, by December, particularly to those competitive, need-blind institutions.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

A POEM TO INVITE REFLECTION

“I Pastori (The Shepherds)”

By Gabriele D’Annunzio

September, let us go. It is time to migrate.

Now in the land of the Abruzzi my shepherds

leave the pens and go towards the sea:

they go down to the wild Adriatic

which is green like the mountain pastures.

They have drunk deep at alpine springs,

so that the taste of native water

may remain in exile hearts as comfort,

to charm their thirst for long upon the way.

They have renewed their staffs of hazel.

And they go along the ancient drove-path to the plain,

as if by grassy, silent river,

upon the traces of the early fathers.

O voice of him who first

knows the trembling of the sea!

Now on the shore at its side marches

the flock. The air is without motion.

The sun so gilds the living wool

that it hardly differs from the sand.

Sea-washing, trampling, sweet sounds.

Ah why am I not with my shepherds?

D’Annunzio, Gabriele. “I Pastori (The Shepherds)” in Teaching with Fire: Poetry that Sustains the Courage to Teach. (San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 2003).

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT (OIERA)

OIERA: Closing the Loop on Our Assessment of Our Own Processes

If there’s anything the spring cyber event taught us, it is the importance of contingency planning. While the COVID pandemic shut us down physically and required a swift migration to Teams, Zoom and other virtual working and learning spaces, the spring events disrupted links between digital platforms, databases and folders. Combined with increasingly centralized IT at CUNY, the (small) OIERA team was forced to face an opportunity to rethink prior practice. It has also been an opportunity to lean on the team’s integration of new skill sets (i.e., Director of Assessment and Associate Professor Anders Stachelek, Ed.D. is one semester shy of completing a Masters in Data Analytics at Baruch; Associate Director Vitus Tindana is teaching himself R and Python via YouTube and other open sources).

What does this mean in more concrete terms? For example, an assessment of the past three cycles of student evaluations made clear that technology and communication challenges resulted in either just in time, delayed or truncated evaluation periods and/or faculty access to evaluations needed for portfolios. The solution is two-fold: first, to move up the timeline for preparing student evaluations for release in coordination with IT (to one full week before release), and the preparation of completed evaluations to be accessed by Chairs and disseminated to faculty for upload to portfolios (to three weeks after the close of the evaluation period). The second change is to identify, as with all regular/required OIERA processes, a contingency plan in case platforms/software/storage are compromised.

Senior Director Piotr Kocik is leading this initiative, as well as related cross-training of the OIERA team and his efforts will make OIERA’s processes more transparent (while continuing to keep data secure, of course). It’s a timely change and one that will make the unit stronger. It’s also an appropriate “closing the loop” response when we turn the assessment lens on ourselves!

OFFICE OF COMPLIANCE AND DIVERSITY

Submitted by Chief Diversity Officer, Title IX Coordinator, and 504/ADA Coordinator Philip Oliveri, Esq.

LGBTQIA+ History Month

As we enter the month of October, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight that October is recognized as LGBTQIA+ History Month, an annual month-long observance of LGBTQIA+ history, rights, and related civil rights movements.  LGBTQIA+ History Month emphasizes role models, builds community, represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community, and sends an important message to our campus community members about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of the LGBTQIA+ community in American history.  For more information related to the LGBTQIA+ role models and figures that celebrate their achievements, please refer to the following link: Home | LGBTHistoryMonth.com.

Additionally, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight two days this month related to the celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community: today, October 11, is recognized as National Coming Out Day, and October 16 is recognized as International Pronouns Day. Hostos’ LGBTQIA+ Consortium, in collaboration with Rainbow Hostos and the Office of Compliance and Diversity, will be hosting an event on October 16 in celebration of International Pronouns Day, located in the Atrium between the A and C buildings, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Please join us and participate in procuring and wearing a button that displays your pronouns, encourages respect and recognition of an individual’s right to self-identify, and endeavors to make the use of personal pronouns more commonplace in our community.

Hostos Honors Program Students Participate in the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit

Professor Ernest Ialongo, Honors Program Co-Director, Chair of College Senate, Chair of Behavioral and Social Sciences Department

The Concordia Annual Summit, held annually in New York City during September, is a prominent platform for fostering collaboration between public and private sectors. This influential gathering convenes heads of state, government officials, leaders of non-profit organizations, and entrepreneurs to address pressing global issues. For the second year in a row, students from the Honors Program at Hostos received an invitation to attend the summit, and, for the first time, one of our members, Ms. Deneisha Noble, represented the College as a panelist in a session entitled "Empowering Youth: Overcoming Obstacles to Leadership in Civil Society." The student attendees included Ms. Adria Sebisaho, Ms. Erika Mata, Ms. Keyla Rodríguez, and Ms. Noble. We invite you to see photos and videos of the event on our Instagram account (@hostos_honors).

Students have gained significant advantages by participating in the Summit as attendees and presenters. They have established valuable connections with speakers, engaged in constructive debates and discussions, and expanded their knowledge by learning about innovative concepts.

For students interested in joining the Honors Program at Hostos, please contact one of the following: Ms. Karla Contreras, Honors Coordinator, at kcontreras@hostos.cuny.edu; Prof. Ernest Ialongo, Co-Director, at eialongo@hostos.cuny.edu; or Prof. Cynthia Jones, Co-Director, at cjones@hostos.cuny.edu.

POEMS FOR THE COMMUNITY

“America”

By Claude McKay

Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,

And sinks into my throat her tiger’s tooth,

Stealing my breath of life, I will confess

I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!

Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,

Giving me strength erect against her hate.

Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood.

Yet as a rebel fronts a king in state,

I stand within her walls with not a shred

Of terror, malice, not a word of jeer.

Darkly I gaze into the days ahead,

And see her might and granite wonders there,

Beneath the touch of Time’s unerring hand,

Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand

Mandatory Trainings for 2024-2025

New York State Law and CUNY’s policies on Sex-Based Misconduct Prevention and Workplace Violence Prevention require employees to complete the ESPARC and WVP compliance trainings at least once every year. All part-time employees, including adjuncts, are responsible for completing both training courses by the end of the current semester to ensure the University logs their completion. All full-time employees will have until Friday, May 30, 2025, to complete both courses.

Additionally, the state-mandated Gender Based Violence Training will only be available on Blackboard for all HR professionals, as well as designated managers with at least one direct report. If employees receive an automated email notification regarding GBVT, they are required to complete it by Friday, May 30, 2025, if they are a full-time employee, or by the end of the current semester if they are a part-time employee. If you do not receive an email notification regarding GBVT, then you are not required to complete it.

Active employees are automatically registered for the trainings in Blackboard. Employees can sign into their CUNY Blackboard account and navigate to My Organizations to view and complete both the ESPARC and WVP trainings. Employees also required to complete the Gender Based Violence Training will find the course listed under My Organizations in Blackboard as well. If you are not required to complete the Gender Based Violence Training, you will not see it available in Blackboard.  Step-by-step instructions for completing the trainings can be found on the course Announcements page. New hires will have access to their courses on the next business day after becoming an active employee in CUNYfirst.

All employees are expected to be in compliance with these mandatory trainings in accordance with NY State and City Law. If you experience any technical difficulty, please reach out to Annie Pena in Human Resources at x6817.

We recommend that you complete the required trainings promptly in order to avoid receiving repeated email reminder regarding compliance. Thank you for your cooperation.
