MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
What a beautiful moment in the season, as the leaves begin to turn and splendor is all around us. I reflect on this moment where beauty and challenges are in the air and very much a part of the work at this point in the semester. Consider the multiple efforts to inform, support, reach and to ensure retention and success for students, who are entering midterms weeks, and also the celebrations, including our SGA’s Halloween celebrations, and the lunch hour dance lessons. It is crucial to reach out and connect students to services, including advisement, tutoring, and to take time during office hours to ensure that all is going well in all of the classes.
October 23 is the first day of registration for the Spring 2024 semester. I understand from the Provost and VP for Student Development and Enrollment Management how much was done to ensure that we are offering classes for our students’ progress at times that are accessible. A survey taken by over 1,000 students guided some of the decisions, as did the contributions of colleagues overseeing programs. I truly appreciate our collective efforts as we continue to bring enrollment back to pre-pandemic levels and retention in the right direction.
You received an electronic copy of this year’s operational plan this week. During our Stated Meeting of the College, we shared our Hostos: Elevating Justice, Strategic Plan 2023-2028. Progress will be reviewed in January 2024, and again, constituencies from each division will be consulted as we assess where we are and what else we might need to do to continue our path to success.
Thank you for your kindness, always, and for the hard work being done at Hostos each and every day. I close by reminding us to respect one another and our differences in hope and solidarity with the people of Israel.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

“Kindness”
By Naomi Shihab Nye
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to gaze at bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT KATHY DISLA
|
Dear Caimans,
I hope that your semester is going very well and you are doing well in all of your classes.
I just wanted to take some time to thank those of you who have assumed leadership of the clubs and started planning and holding events. With 50 clubs on campus, I am sure that the College will be alive and well. The SGA and the club leaders truly hope that every student who enrolled for Fall 2023 will take advantage of the opportunities to network, learn, share, and party with us.
That being said, I want to announce that the SGA, in collaboration with the Urban Unity
Club and several other clubs will be hosting the Turn Up Hostos: Costume Party on Friday, October 13, from 5-8 p.m. So turn up! Come one and all. Dress in your scariest attire, take pictures in the 360 machine, and participate in a talent competition for incredible prizes.
I also want to say that the SGA members met with Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis and her cabinet members on September 28, the day that we learned that the cafeteria had closed its doors. As a group, we raised our concerns with the administration about being in a food desert and having limited healthy and nutritious options both on and off campus, and we were assured that the College will do all that they possibly can to correct the situation as soon as possible. I want to let every student know that the SGA will continue to support our campus food pantry and work to have food at every event that we sponsor and ask the club leaders to do the same. As a student myself who works at the College and takes classes, I understand how long a day can be, particularly without food. If you are facing a personal challenge, please come and visit one of the SGA offices on the 5th floor of the C-building, and we will try to help you out.
Finally, I want to remind you all that the SGA, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, will sponsor 18 scholarships this semester of $500 each. We will have six merit-based scholarships, six need-based scholarships, and six hardship scholarships. All of the scholarships will be posted within the next few days on the Hostos website here: https://hostos.academicworks.com/. Please apply and take advantage of these great opportunities.
I hope to see you all at the upcoming events, at the SGA booth, in my office, or around the campus.
Stay well and thrive,
Kathy

MS. MACKENZIE SCOTT’S GIFT: PRESIDENT’S INITIATIVES
|
Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director
Dear Students and Colleagues,
The Hostos Campus Climate Initiative is continuing its Community-Building Circles with the New York Peace Institute and all students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. The first circle was held last month and I found it to be a personally rewarding experience to engage in these dialogues with my fellow Hostos community members. The circles are a great way for us to come together to learn and listen to one another about our views and experiences and discuss important issues that affect our community. The next two circles are scheduled for October 24 (Room C-361) and November 14 (Room C-391) from 3 – 5 p.m. If you did not have the opportunity to attend last month, be sure to come out for the next session.
Register here to attend.
The Hostos Research Center is delighted to host its next Open House on Thursday, October 26, at 3:30 p.m. with a special research presentation by Professors Marcelo Viana Neto and Matthew Balousek, and the team of students who participated in Hostos’ very own game design studio - Other Possible Games. This will be an interactive presentation where attendees will have the opportunity to play the game our students created and provide feedback to the team. This will be an incredible opportunity to hear from our faculty and students about the game design experience and how it is benefitting their academic and professional development. Our first Open House was very well received and highly engaging with students, faculty and staff in attendance. I look forward to seeing you at the next Open House!
Sincerely,
Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D.

Academic Assessment for the Academic Year 2023-2024
The goal of this week’s contribution is to provide an update about where we are in terms of the timeline for academic assessment for this academic year. Regarding the assessment of degree programs and academic department functions, the A-PART will continue to be used to document such work. On the plus side, based on faculty feedback, this process has been simplified on the A-PART level and scaffolded on the side of assessment.
The A-PART is comprised of three sections. In the first section, the goal is to track faculty progress towards tenure and promotion, as well as recognize faculty for their participation in professional development and service at the College and CUNY levels, as well as within external organizations. The second section focuses on the departmental activities aligned with the “Hostos Elevating Justice 2023–2028 Strategic Plan,” in which the substantial activities of the department are mapped to the six goals and/or the Office of Academic Affairs’ Academic Implementation Plan through its overarching categories of Teaching Excellence, Curriculum Innovation, and Student Success. These activities are quickly identified by looking at resources allocated to the faculty in the department to support major initiatives, whether through faculty release time or grant funding. In the final section of the A-PART, the primary focus is still on reporting assessment at the degree program or general education level. A new tool designed to support and enhance assessment is the Program Learning Outcomes Template which outlines the process of conducting three meetings across a semester to 1) select the program learning outcome to be assessed and the courses in which it will be assessed, 2) devise a methodology of assessment by determining the assignment and way of measuring student learning of the outcome, and 3) aggregate the data to make a plan of action to improve the learning of this outcome.
As of this week, all academic departments now have access to a draft version of the A-PART document in which they can populate the activities they are planning for this academic year, finalizing these activities and begin recording results from the start of the Fall semester rather than remembering the work at the end of the academic year. Furthermore, every degree program must assess one Program Learning Outcome (PLO) each academic year, and hopefully, the new template will facilitate this process.

LGBTQIA+ History Month
As we enter the month of October, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight that October is recognized as LGBTQIA+ History Month, which is an annual month-long observance of LGBTQIA+ history, rights, and related civil rights movements. LGBTQIA+ History Month emphasizes role models, builds community, represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community, and sends an important message to our campus community members about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of the LGBTQIA+ community in American history. For more information related to the LGBTQIA+ role models and figures that celebrate their achievements, please refer to the following link: Home | LGBTHistoryMonth.com.
Additionally, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight two days this month related to the celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community: October 11 is recognized as National Coming Out Day, and October 18 is recognized as International Pronouns Day. Hostos’ LGBTQIA+ Consortium, in collaboration with Rainbow Hostos and the Office of Compliance and Diversity, will be hosting an event on October 18 in celebration of International Pronouns Day, located in the Atrium between the A and C Buildings. Please join us and participate in procuring and wearing a button that displays your pronouns, encourages respect and recognition of an individual’s right to self-identify, and endeavors to make the use of personal pronouns more commonplace in our community.

Internship Success Stories
Internship with HOPE Leads Student to Professional Job
By Corin Perez de Cruz, A.A.S. in Early Childhood Education
I completed my internship at the Holistic Oasis for Parents Education (HOPE) program. Career Services helped me with effectively applying for jobs. I received invaluable guidance and support to succeed during my job interview, as the staff at Career Services were passionate and proactive in helping students with the entire process of placement and registration for internships, resumes, Grow with Google, job applications, and expanding their experience in the job market. Thanks to my internship experience, I got the job! My position at MID BRONX CCRP is as an Assistant Teacher, and my responsibilities include supporting classroom instruction, classroom management, grading and assessment, individualized student support, and collaborating with colleagues. Through my internship, I gained a deep understanding of the importance of work-based learning and its impact on students’ educational journeys. This knowledge and hands-on experience were instrumental in landing this position and will undoubtedly contribute to my continued growth.
Senior Center Internship
By Quanisha Walker, A.A.S Aging and Health Studies
I completed my internship with Advisory Board Member Ms. Antoinette Emers. She is an advocate and has nine different senior centers located in the Bronx, East Harlem, and East New York, Brooklyn. Working with Ms. Emers gave me the full hands-on experience I needed while I completed my hours. Career Services helped me with everything, including my resume, mock interviews to prepare for future interviews, and tips on how to conduct successful interviews.
Thanks to my internship experience with Antoinette Emers, I have a better knowledge of advocacy and know in what direction I would like to head after I graduate, which is Social Work and Advocacy. Having been admitted to Lehman College, I will pursue a career in Social Work and take it from there.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT (SDEM)

Accessibility Resource Center (ARC)
The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that 11.1% of students enrolled in undergraduate higher education in the US have a disability. Experts believe that number might be even higher, but students with disabilities don’t always report needing assistance, making it harder to measure and provide the support required. Hostos Community College is committed to providing equal access to all academic programs, resources, and opportunities our campus and university offer.
Hostos ARC continues to provide academic support, accommodations, student leadership opportunities, mentoring, career development, and faculty/staff training on Universal Design. ARC encourages every student with a disability to visit our office or any Hostos student struggling academically and wishes to understand more about their learning style and innovative ways to maximize their learning potential. Some of the programs and supports provided by ARC are as follows:
1) Assistive technology loan and training
2) In-person and virtual mentoring
3) Inclusive athletics
4) Student leadership and learning opportunities
5) Learning assessment and guidance
6) Accommodation counseling
7) Faculty/Staff training in UDL
The services are not limited to the above, and we pride ourselves on being a resource for students to guide them to the best campus, University, or community partner to provide the assistance they need. ARC understands that students have much on their plates, and we want to help.
ARC is happy to share that our University has recognized the services outlined above, and ARC will be featured on CUNY TV discussing best practices and enrollment and marketing strategies, making Hostos a prime destination for all students with or without disabilities seeking to begin their college career in NYC. The segment was filmed on Tuesday, September 26, and the airdate will be announced soon.
Health and Wellness
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want to remind the Hostos community that the Health and Wellness Center is here to support students, faculty, and staff experiencing intimate partner violence through our Domestic Violence Program (DVP) program.
DVP is committed to promoting and enhancing healthy lifestyles, healthy relationships, and the emotional and spiritual wellness of our students, staff, and faculty. Throughout the year, an assortment of services, activities, and resources are offered to impact their wellness and the wellness of Hostos Community College. These services also include assisting victims and survivors of domestic violence in connecting to the appropriate community resources.
For assistance or for additional information, please contact the Domestic Violence Campus Liaison, Fabián Wander, LCSW, via email at fwander@hostos.cuny.edu or call 718-518-6567.
CUNY EDGE
CUNY EDGE, in collaboration with One Stop and our external partner, LIFT NYC, facilitated a benefits workshop for students. During this workshop, CUNY EDGE students learned about the benefits and services these programs offer. Topics ranged from how to access the new applications for Food Stamps and Cash Assistance, Food Pantry access, Housing Assistance, Legal Assistance with issues such as housing eviction, immigration, child support, and much more. Additionally, our CUNY EDGE student parents learned about the financial and career coaching that the LIFT NYC community organization provides, free of charge; and as an added incentive, they can earn a $150 direct cash payment from LIFT after every three months of coaching.
We look forward to providing these workshops to our students so that they can leave feeling empowered and equipped with valuable knowledge and resources that will help them reach their goals.

A POEM TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY
“On Broadway”
By Claude McKay
About me young careless feet
Linger along the garish street;
Above, a hundred shouting signs
Shed down their bright fantastic glow
Upon the merry crowd and lines
Of moving carriages below.
Oh wonderful is Broadway — only
My heart, my heart is lonely.
Desire naked, linked with Passion,
Goes trotting by in brazen fashion;
From playhouse, cabaret and inn
The rainbow lights of Broadway blaze
All gay without, all glad within;
As in a dream I stand and gaze
At Broadway, shining Broadway — only
My heart, my heart is lonely.

Jeanne Clery Report
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) is a federal law that requires colleges and universities participating in federal financial aid programs to maintain and disclose annual campus crime statistics and security information on and around their campus. The U.S. Department of Education enforces the Clery Act and may level civil penalties against institutions of higher education if they are not in compliance. The purpose of the Clery Act is to ensure that higher education institutions are enacting crime-related policies and publicly reporting statistics on criminal offenses for the campus and adjacent areas. Clery Act reports by school can be found on the Federal Student Aid website via this link.
The Jeanne Clery Report for Hostos Community College contains crime statistics for the previous three calendar years as well as information regarding campus security such as emergency procedures, crime prevention, university law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, sexual assault prevention, disciplinary procedures, and other topics related to security on campus. The report may be accessed through the Hostos Public Safety Department’s site under the Annual Security Report web page.
