El Semanario Hostosiano / The Hostos Weekly: A Campus-Weekly Bulletin from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

Friday, October 17, 2025 | Vol. 11, No. 8

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

How quickly time flies by when we are all so busy. Just think of all the good work that has taken place and all of the work that still needs to be done. Spring schedules will soon be distributed. It is time to encourage our students to begin to think about pre-registration as we provide support for the successful completion of the mid-terms and end of the semester. As I meet with students, I am always encouraged by their sense of hope, optimism and gratitude for all everyone is doing to support their progress.

There is no denying we are facing challenges, but also that we continue moving forward in the spirit of our mission, with acceptance, inclusivity and a responsible budget to support sound academic programs and valuable education. Our collective story is about maintaining an environment that is open, inclusive, accepting of all; an environment where all can learn and can engage with hope, respect and love for others. As we begin to consider the blanket of winter that is soon to be covering us, the time is ripe to reflect on peace on earth and among all of us, every day, in every gesture, as we embrace having created and continuing to support a place where the air is clear and safe to breathe, to learn and to work.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEM

Remember

By Joe Harjo

Remember the sky that you were born under,

know each of the star’s stories.

Remember the moon, know who she is.

Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the

strongest point of time. Remember sundown

and the giving away to night.

Remember your birth, how your mother struggled

to give you form and breath. You are evidence of

her life, and her mother’s, and hers.

Remember your father. He is your life, also.

Remember the earth whose skin you are:

red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth

brown earth, we are earth.

Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their

tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,

listen to them. They are alive poems.

Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the

origin of this universe.

Remember you are all people and all people

are you.

Remember you are this universe and this

universe is you.

Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.

Remember language comes from this.

Remember the dance language is, that life is.

Remember.

“Letters to Students” Book Presentation at Hostos Research Center

All members of the Hostos community are invited to attend a special book presentation of “Letters to Students: What it Means to be a College Graduate,” with Dr. Robert A. Scott, who will share with us the profound insights, wisdom, and guidance that he and his co-author, Dr. Drew Bogner, have written as letters to students. The book and the presentation will speak to the enduring value of a college education in preparing students not only for success in the workforce, but more importantly, for the life lessons that are learned, and the preparation for meaningful engagement in our communities that it provides. Dr. Scott is President Emeritus and University Professor Emeritus of Adelphi University, where he served for 15 years, an expert on higher education governance and leadership, author of numerous articles and essays, and advocate for the transformative power of higher education.

Join us on Wednesday, October 22, at 11 a.m., in the Hostos Research Center for this enlightening presentation. A select number of books will be given to students.

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT (OIERA)

Submitted by Assistant Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness Babette Audant, Ph.D.

First-year Outcomes as Foundations for Three-year Graduation

At Hostos, as at other higher ed institutions, we track First Year Experience and first-year outcomes because of the close correlation between success in students’ first semesters and their chances of graduating in three years or less. The goal of analyzing the data is not to distinguish the students who succeed from those who don’t, but rather to inform how and where we, as staff and faculty, communicate clearly to students about priorities and opportunities, and how we support student learning, their ability to meet financial needs, and their sense of belonging.

For community colleges nation-wide, the gold standard measure of “completion success” is 3-year, or 150% time, graduation. While community colleges are still sometimes called “two-year colleges,” based on the amount of time an associate degree is designed to be completed under ideal conditions (15 credits completed for each of four sequential semester), the 150% standard is recognition that the majority of students are not enrolling and completing college under “ideal” conditions (baccalaureate-granting institutions, also called senior or four-year colleges, also track 150% completion rates or 6-year graduation). Nationally, the rates for community colleges are ~33% for the Fall 2018 - 2021 cohorts. Hostos’ three-year graduation rate for the same cohorts was 16.7%.

What does this mean in more concrete terms?

  • 4521 first-time freshmen (FTFs) enrolled at Hostos in Fall 2018-2021.
  • First year retention across these four cohorts was, on average, 53.4%.
  • Second-year retention was 30.3%.
  • 54.4% completed Gateway English in Year 1, and 42.7% completed Gateway Math in Year 1.
  • Only 9.4% completed 30 or more credits in their first year, and 22.6% completed 20 credits or more.
  • 8.4% entered Hostos as English Language Learners (ELLs).
  • 757 graduated in three years or less.

Looking more closely at the 757 students who graduated in 150% time/3 years, OIERA created dashboards that allow us to disaggregate the data along always imperfect yet illustrative variables:

What do these data indicate about three-year graduates? Starting with the far right column, three-year grads who started Hostos as first-time freshmen (FTFs) in 2018-2021 were less likely to be ELLs in Year 1 than the FTFs on average (5.7% ELLs in Year 1 vs 8.4%). More than one-third completed 30 or more credits in their first year, and more than 80% completed 20 or more credits in their first year — a pace sustained until graduation. Among all students, the relationship between Gateway completion and 3-year graduation remains strong. Notably, although Black male students are underrepresented among three-year grads, their first year outcomes surpass all other intersections of gender and race/ethnicity. Male three-year grads of all races/ethnicities have stronger first year outcomes than female three-year grads in all categories included here, while male FTFs overall have lower first year outcomes than female students overall, suggesting that first year success is an even stronger predictor of retention for male students, even among the already smaller number of male students who initially enroll in college.

None of this takes away from the significant and hard-won gains in the past year in Gateway completion rates achieved with intentional coordination of advisors, faculty, the integration of Navigate alerts and access to academic and non-academic supports. The retention gains we see with the Fall 2024 cohort are extremely promising (nearly 60%), an early suggestion that comprehensive First Year Experience has a measurable impact. And, where we see bifurcated, or bimodal, outcomes among all students who enroll Hostos, the gap between those who make it to graduation and those who pursue other goals is greater among male students. The intention is that analyses like these shared above inform interventions that ultimately — as past results suggest — improve outcomes for all students while addressing inequitable outcomes gaps.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Thank You for an Amazing Hispanic Heritage Month!

Thank you again for the warm welcome into community spaces which celebrate culture, justice, education, and service. I am deeply thankful to our partners and friends for inviting my office to share these meaningful cultural celebration moments.

  • On October 10, 2025, we joined Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo in collaboration with the September 11th Memorial & Museum for “Honoring the Puerto Rican Victims of 9/11: Commemorating the Installation of the Puerto Rican Flag at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.” This memorable addition honors the legacy, sacrifices, and contributions of Puerto Ricans to New York City and State.
  • That same day, we attended El Diario La Prensa’s El Awards, paying tribute to distinguished Latino professionals for their contributions and successful career achievements. Congratulations to all the honorees, especially our own Dean Carlos Rivera from SDEM, who was recognized at the full house gathering.
  • On October 14, 2025, we joined Lincoln Hospital’s Hispanic Heritage Celebration honoring the contributions of Latino Trailblazers.
  • We also extend our gratitude to NAICA for their cordial invitation to their annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
  • Finally, thanks to the Dirección de Cultura Dominicana en el Exterior, elected officials, and community-based organizations for their kind invitations to meetings, forums, and cultural heritage celebrations commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month.

We deeply appreciate these partners for welcoming Hostos into their spaces and for allowing us to stand alongside them in service to our communities. These moments remind us that Hostos is strongest when we walk together — with educators, leaders, and neighbors — toward a brighter and more inclusive future.

Lastly, please note that applications for the Summer 2026 Professional Development & Study Abroad Program in the Dominican Republic are now open. To register, or for additional information, please email Mr. Gerson Peña at GPENA@hostos.cuny.edu.
