Friday, October 24, 2025 | Vol. 11, No. 9 | | MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS | | |
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
These are just a few words to say how delighted I am to know that Spring 2026 registration began on Monday, October 20. This is a good time to work together — faculty, students, and advisors — to ensure that all support is in place for a successful completion of classes in the fall semester, and that students engage in planning for the next. We are offering 1051 sections, 65% in person and the rest online, asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, etc. There are 187 sections that start after 5 p.m. and 60 over the weekend. Thank you all for ensuring our continuing students find the right classes at the time most convenient.
I note that life is in full bloom at the College with so many of our students and colleagues engaged in social and academic interactions throughout the buildings. Hope and engagement are thriving at Hostos.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

“Phenomenal Woman”
By Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

| | MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT NICHELLE HEMPHILL | | |
Hello, Everyone!
As Student Government President, I share this message not just as a leader, but as a witness to the incredible momentum we’re building together, one that is rooted in compassion, advocacy, and collective pride.
This month, we launched the Winter Coat Initiative in partnership with the Children’s Center, ensuring that families in our community stay warm and supported. It’s more than a donation drive; it’s a statement that no child should face the cold alone.
We also collaborated with Health and Wellness to host a reproductive health event, creating space for education, empowerment, and open dialogue. In a time when access and autonomy are under threat, this event reminded us that knowledge is a form of care.
On October 30, we’re partnering with the Counseling Center to offer resources and support that focus on mental health and student well-being. Because healing and success go hand-in-hand. Also on the 30th, SGA is hosting Hostoween, a celebration of creativity, community, and campus spirit. Costumes, connection, and joy — come through! We have more information at our booth on the C-building’s third floor. Follow us on Instagram as well (@sgacares)!
We’re excited to have welcomed Puerto Rican artist Kayleen Berry to campus, whose presence reminded us of the power of storytelling, resilience, and representation. Her visit sparked conversations that will echo far beyond that day.
We also celebrated the Hostos Scholarship Fund Golf Outing, a joyful event that raised critical funds for students who dare to dream. Every swing was a step toward equity and opportunity.
Looking ahead to November 6, we will host a Paint and Sip event, blending creativity and community in a space where students can unwind, express, and connect. Again, learn more about it by visiting us at our booth and following us on social media!
And finally, I want to take this opportunity to recognize October as Italian American Heritage Month— most definitely a time to honor the contributions, culture, and legacy of Italian Americans. Let’s continue to uplift all heritages that make Hostos a mosaic of brilliance.
More soon,
Nichelle

Afternoon of Peace & Poetry
The Office of the President and the Writing Center are delighted to announce an afternoon of Peace & Poetry on Tuesday, December 9, at 1 p.m. in the Savoy Multi-Purpose Room that will provide an opportunity for our very own Hostos poets — students, faculty, and staff — to come together to share their favorite poem or an original creation. For the past two years, the Peace & Poetry event has generated great joy amidst dignified reflection as our community joins together in sharing poems that resonate with our lived experiences, and our hopes and dreams for the future. Earlier this year the first publication, a compilation of the original works submitted by the poets who participated in the events was created, and will now continue to be issued as a biennial publication.
This year, we are adding a bilingual flair and inviting submissions of poetry in Spanish, as well as other languages spoken by members of our community. This will be a truly “Hostos” way of ushering in the end of the semester as we look to the holidays ahead. The announcement with the submission link can be found here. All who are interested in participating are invited to submit their poetry selection by Friday, November 14, 2025, for consideration. All members of the Hostos community are invited to join in this beautiful celebration as we gather to enjoy a delicious lunch and reflect on the inspirational power of poetry to nurture and uplift us.

Engaging with AI: Technical and Existential Opportunities
In the 2023-2028 Hostos Strategic Plan: Elevating Justice, Goal 4: Academic programs that balance intellectual growth and workforce preparedness, cites among five strategies, the “measure and develop[ment]” of “foreign language and technology competencies across majors.” The pairing of these two skill sets was intentional, since each aligns with career preparation and our institutional commitment to advancing socio-economic mobility (foreign language competencies were addressed on 10/10/25); this week the focus is on the development of technology skills, or, a related tangent.
At the time the Strategic Plan was written, the intention was to assess and strengthen technology skills within the context of particular degree programs and courses, and in relation to disciplinary context and employer expectations. This remains an important consideration that needs to be addressed and, since then, concerns about and appropriate roles for artificial intelligence, or AI, have eclipsed conversation about other discipline-appropriate technologies. Throughout Hostos, faculty and staff are exploring and discussing how AI changes (and in some cases, interrupts) learning, examining pedagogical strategies, outcomes measures and how we communicate the value of education to students. What are the benefits of engaging with course content, sustaining curiosity and unknowing, and risking failure? While these are the reasons most of us spend our lives in higher education, for at least some of our students, who are making daily choices about how their time and energy is allocated, completing the work may sometimes become the priority and AI makes this possible in new ways.
Institutionally, there are multiple sustained conversations taking place about AI including CTL’s (Center for Teaching and Learning) three-part workshop series about AI in the classroom. The English Department has developed one AI-enabled composition course and is working on another five that actively engage AI as a writing tool. Many faculty are creating assignments that invite students to use AI and practice the difference between appropriate and inappropriate applications. Documentation of these assignments, courses and strategies is something that OIERA can assist with (and yes, I’m sneaking in an invitation to participate — please reach out if you have something in mind!), whether it be the development of draft policies to include on syllabi or considerations about what it means to give exams in online asynchronous courses or how to assign work of any kind that thwarts unwanted use of AI and rewards students for slowing down and taking time to think critically.
These are technical questions and deeply existential ones as many of us do our own explorations in how AI can be a powerful tool that supports research, or saves time otherwise spent on administrative tasks, leaving more time for reflection, writing, or engaging with students - and how AI can be understood as part of an ongoing and accelerating evolving integration of humanity and the machines we build. As we adapt, inquire, engage and discover the ways in which AI is applied, excluded and engaged with across Hostos, we are creating opportunities to actively share, assess and sustain conversations about what these tools could and should be used for, as well as their limitations, illuminations and hallucinations.

Governor Hochul Warns Against Scams Targeting New York’s Inflation Refund Checks
This week’s update comes from the Office of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Scammers are sending text messages, voice messages, emails and direct mail to taxpayers falsely claiming that New Yorkers must submit personal payment information in order to receive a New York State inflation refund check, supposedly so revenue agencies can deposit money into a taxpayer's bank account. The New York State Tax Department and the IRS will not call or text New Yorkers with requests for any personal information. View an example of this text message so you know what to look out for.
Eligible New Yorkers do not need to apply, sign up or do anything to receive an inflation refund check. If you filed a tax return, are below the income thresholds and no one else claimed you as a dependent, you will receive a check. For more information on eligibility and other details, visit the New York State Tax Department's webpage at ny.gov/inflationrefund.
If you receive one of these messages appearing to be from the Tax Department, block the sender, delete the message, and report this scam to the Tax Department or IRS.
Report Scams
If you’ve been scammed or think you’ve received an email, phone call or text that seems suspicious, report it. For more taxpayer scam information, visit the Division of Consumer Protection's Taxpayer Scam webpage. For additional identity theft prevention and mitigation resources, call the Consumer Helpline at 800-697-1220 or visit the Division’s Identity Theft Prevention and Mitigation Program webpage.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Observed each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities and recognizes supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices that benefit employers and employees. Accordingly, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a landmark federal law aimed to protect and empower people with disabilities in the US by prohibiting employment discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Moreover, Section 504 of the aforementioned Rehabilitation Action also requires educational institutions to provide equal access and reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities, such as ramps, interpreters, and modified tests.

Proyecto Access Continues with Funding from NYSED
Great news! Earlier this year, Proyecto Access secured renewed funding from NYSED to serve 264 STEP students and 124 CSTEP undergraduates annually for the next five years. With a continued focus on academic excellence, mentorship, and community engagement, the Hostos STEP and CSTEP Summer Programs remain steadfast in preparing and empowering the next generation of STEM leaders. Overall, the CSTEP Summer 2025 Workshop Series provides a superb example of the type of dynamic and inclusive platform that was provided for 70 Hostos undergraduates to explore emerging STEM fields, apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, and build connections with professionals and peers. The 2025 summer series began with the “Cybersecurity Awareness Workshop” with visiting faculty from Miami Dade College. The series progressed to “From Data Preparation to Deployment: AI in Practice” with visiting faculty from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and an industry expert from Deloitte. The series finished with a workshop “Anatomy and Physiology: Exploring Human Biology.” With such a wonderful series of workshops offered in Summer 2025, we cannot wait to learn what CSTEP will plan for Summer 2026.

The Re-Inventory Process
Re-inventory is a process performed each calendar year (January through December), not fiscal or academic year. The asset management team, which is under the Procurement department, goes to each campus building starting in January to take stock of college assets and equipment, including loaner devices, and enters them into the CUNY inventory system. This process is mandatory and critical for the College’s compliance and inventory records.
This calendar year 2025, the asset management team has been able to begin the re-inventory process much earlier in order to meet the December deadline. Therefore, even though you may have had your loaner device/equipment scanned last year, they will need to be scanned again for the 2025 re-inventory.
As a reminder, the Asset Management team will have a table in the A-Atrium to scan Hostos loaner devices on the following dates:
Monday, October 27 | 10 AM - 3 PM
Tuesday, October 28 | 10 AM - 3 PM
Hostos loaner devices are any devices/equipment purchased through Hostos, whether with grant/research funds or tax levy funds. If you are not available to come in on the above dates, please contact Edita Makolli (emakolli@hostos.cuny.edu) to make alternate arrangements.
Your understanding and cooperation is essential and greatly appreciated.
