MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
As another week comes to its close, I rejoice in the multiple activities going on at the College to support the student experience, academic progress, mental health and transfer opportunities, and the special events designed to support diversity, equity, tolerance and peace of mind and with the world. Consider the following opportunities offered just this past week and on an ongoing basis:
- Dancing in our Dance Studio, C152, mid-Wednesday, sponsored by our Health and Wellness program— which is quite unique and simply splendid.
- The Writing Center and Scholarships Office offer a number of workshops on personal statements that will assist students in applying and competing for scholarships.
- The monthly Open House sessions at the Hostos Research Center, supported by presentations by our faculty and students.
- A staged reading of the play “Homeward,” written by someone known to us all, the talented Anna Pond. Produced by Professor Ángel Morales, with some of our very own students performing.
- Pause and Paint For Stress Relief and Relaxation.
- Let’s Talk About It! College Outside the Classroom, hosted by the Counseling Center, covering topics such as expectations, relationships, managing conflicts, maturity and communication
- Music is…Family Feud — a friendly competition between staff and students to help raise awareness around stress reduction and self-care.
There are so many more announcements every week. I encourage students and faculty alike to discuss and to participate, as applicable, as we look for a fully supportive outside-of-the-classroom experience and celebration of the human spirit, as frequently as schedules allow. Please continue to support and attend when possible. I am ever so grateful to my generous colleagues and proud of our persevering and hardworking students. Bravi!
Mil gracias y bendiciones,

"The Negro Speaks of Rivers"
By Langston Hughes
I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human
veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and
I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.
I’ve known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA)
PRESIDENT

|
Remarks from College-Wide Senate Meeting, October 19:
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Kobe Jacobs, and I will be serving as the interim president of the Student Government. Though we’re working through internal changes, we still stand tall. Right now, there are 50 registered active clubs. On Friday the 13th there was a Halloween costume party sponsored by the SGA, hosted by the Urban Unity Club. There was a turnout of over 150 students. Shout-out to Dean Sterling for coming through to aid in serving food. It was a fun and successful event. In our future endeavors, one of our members, Brian Carter, is hosting his consecutive collaboration with the Counseling Center to provide mental health awareness in the form of a workshop series. The Student Government Association is also planning to provide financial support and volunteer services to the Single-Stop program to provide food for families during the Thanksgiving holiday. We have our SGA Assembly coming up, as well. It’s where we get to directly connect with students and present all of our past and future plans. Hostos has renewed vitality and we’re excited to keep doing our part in retaining this life.

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT (OIERA)
|
Submitted by Director of Assessment AJ Stachelek, Ed.D.
What Time Is It? It’s Time for a Midpoint Check-in!
As Director of Assessment, my main goal in this position is to “build a culture of assessment” here at Hostos Community College. While this goal is incredibly important for the success of students, I have discovered that the word “assessment” may at times intimidate some and often turns off the many. The problem as I see it is that “assessment” has become a checklist to satisfy external entities, rather than an opportunity to improve. At this midpoint of the semester, I invite faculty to capitalize on the learning students have already demonstrated to move from the word “assessment” to the word “reflection.”
As a faculty member, I spent a lot of time creating midterm progress reports (whether on slips of paper or Succeed@Hostos). No matter how well I thought I had explained, simplified, and outlined the requirements in the syllabus, students were inevitably uncertain of their standing in my course (good or bad). They could not identify where they were struggling, or where they were successful.
The experience I was having with my students was not an isolated incident. When reading the book by Saundra Yancy McGuire titled “Teach Students How to Learn,” I learned that students develop skills to “do school” rather than to learn. In fact, many of the strategies students used even worked in high school, achieving A’s and B’s with minimal effort. The issue that occurred when they came to Hostos is that the methods to “do school” never supported them in learning how to learn, a requirement in their college classes.
The good news is that the midpoint is exactly the point at which it is possible to reach students and let them know that prior strategies are no longer working, and to provide them with new ones! This midpoint check-in not only helps motivate students to try some new study skills, but it provides them with sufficient time to improve as well. I know when I discovered the strengths and weaknesses across student learning in my course, I was also able to recognize gaps in my teaching. When the majority of my students were confused, I realized that I needed to reevaluate how I was going about teaching a particular learning objective and try a new approach. This midpoint check-in process provided me with enough time to pivot in my course as well. I hope everyone takes advantage of this opportunity to look deeply into student learning and share these insights with students and other faculty.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Observed each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities and recognizes supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices that benefit employers and employees. Accordingly, we celebrate the 50-year anniversary of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a landmark federal law aimed to protect and empower people with disabilities in the US by prohibiting employment discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Moreover, Section 504 of the aforementioned Rehabilitation Action also requires educational institutions to provide equal access and reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities, such as ramps, interpreters, and modified tests.

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?

Facilities and Cafeteria Updates
It is a constant challenge to keep buildings that are over 30 years old running well and to ensure the college community has clean, safe, and well-functioning facilities. However, our facilities team has been doing just that. Our custodians are keeping the spaces clean, our maintenance staff are ensuring that the spaces are in good shape, and engineering has been keeping the building systems in good working order. Even with greater numbers of people on campus, cleaning standards remain high and our custodians remain responsive to the community’s needs. With the cooler temperatures creeping upon us, heat across the campus spaces have been turned on. If there is an issue, whether it be a space that needs custodial attention, a room is too hot or cold, pests are spotted, or an elevator is not working, let us know and it will be addressed right away.
As some of you may have experienced recently, a few of the elevators in the B and C buildings have not been cooperative. They had to be taken out of service in order to have certain parts replaced. Much like the buildings housing them, the elevators are old and their parts wear out. We do our best to get them repaired as soon as possible. However, when repair services and parts need to be ordered, we are reliant upon our vendors and delays happen. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation when this occurs.
We also appreciate your patience as the search for a cafeteria vendor continues. Hostos is working with Bronx Community College and LaGuardia Community College on developing a RFP for a food vendor to service all three colleges. In the meantime, Procurement is working with Canteen, our vending machine vendor, on installing machines in the cafeteria that will provide healthy and nutritious food items, coffee, beverages, and snacks. We anticipate having those in place in the early half of November and will continue to keep the community updated.

CEWD Awarded $815,304 to Provide No-Cost Workforce Trainings
The Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) was awarded a $815,304 Pathways to Industrial and Construction Careers (PInCC) grant from the Human Resources Administration (HRA) to provide Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training and Job Readiness Bridge Workshops at no cost to students. Over the course of two years, CEWD will provide CDL Class B training to 100 participants and Job Readiness Bridge Workshops to 108 participants. The program is being funded as part of a $2.4 million grant that was awarded to the City University of New York (CUNY) to support five CUNY campuses: LaGuardia Community College, Kingsborough Community College, Bronx Community College, York Community College, and Hostos Community College.
This project is funded by the U.S. Economic Development Agency under the Good Jobs Challenge Initiative. The Good Jobs Challenge Initiative was created to meet the needs of both American workers and industry by breaking down silos in workforce training systems. The grant is a new workforce program that focuses on connecting Human Resources Administration (HRA) clients to trainings and jobs within the industrial, transportation, and construction sectors in New York City. The mission is to connect participants to stable employment with family-supporting wages and advancement opportunities. Over the next two years, participants will be provided with support services through HRA, partner organizations like CUNY, and the Consortium for Workers Education (CWE).
