MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
As the first week of classes comes to an end, I am delighted to have you all back on campus. A special thank you to all who came together to receive our students. Enrollments are up. “Manos a la obra” (All-hands-on-deck) is at its best at Hostos. In case you didn’t get a chance to see it before, I am sharing with you my communications from last Friday, welcoming the campus community to a new semester.
WELCOME TO THE FALL 2023 SEMESTER AT HOSTOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE!
In-person or virtually – or, more than likely, both – you will begin or continue your studies in your chosen field. Your determination to bring new meaning and opportunity to your life has impelled you to take an active part in shaping your life, your vocation, and your destiny.
The College has provided a path to a brighter future and served as a source of life-transforming education since its founding in 1968. Our graduates pursue meaningful careers in the Bronx, in the greater New York area, throughout the United States, and around the world.
A few examples will give you an idea of the diversity of interests possessed by Hostos students – and of their undeniable talents, skills, and dedication.
Class of 2013 Hostos Community College alumna Kay Bell was recently named the 2023-2025 Bronx Poet Laureate. Author of two poetry collections, Bell promotes the history of poetry in the Bronx and ignites a passion for creative expression through various community engagement events in the borough.
2023 Hostos graduate and men’s basketball player Tionne Palmer received a full scholarship to Lincoln University, an HBCU (Historically Black College and University) in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
This summer, ten Hostos students flew to Edinburgh, Scotland, to participate in Festival Fringe as part of the International Collegiate Theater Festival (ICTF). These stalwart troupers performed “What You Will,” a modern take on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, written by James Zager and directed by Angel Morales.
Fatimah Bah, Yassine Gaye, José González, and Andre Watson, all graduates of the College’s Kaplan Leadership program, are continuing their academic studies at Cornell University, Princeton University, Rice University, and Yale University, respectively.
April witnessed the opening of the Hostos Research Center. The Center has long been a dream of mine because I’ve seen the crucial role research can play in the lives of both students and faculty. The Center supports such activities as developing research, writing grant applications, and creating professional development opportunities. The HRC will also host special research presentations, career fairs, and networking events.
Hostos takes pride in its history and in its namesake: Don Eugenio María de Hostos, the Puerto Rican philosopher, educator, man of letters and fighter for the independence of Puerto Rico. The College arose from the vision and activism of many Puerto Rican, Latino, and other supporters who believed the South Bronx deserved its own community college. We are proud of the quality of teaching and learning at Hostos, and of our work with community agencies to promote educational, labor, economic and community development initiatives. To that end, we offer programs designed to promote engagement both on campus and in our communities.
The Hostos catalog presents a rich offering of career and academic programs, including allied health sciences, digital design and animation, education, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, theater arts, and many other disciplines. Our talented and highly accomplished faculty, staff, and administrators support the goals of new and returning students alike.
A new academic year brings exciting new opportunities for students, and I know this will be a challenging and rewarding experience for you. You are here to excel – and we are here to help you do exactly that.
I wish you all the very best, whether this is your first day at Hostos or your final semester on the road to graduation.
It is a joy to welcome you to Hostos.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

A POEM TO REFLECT ON THE VALUE OF EDUCATION

“On the Other Side of the Door”
By Jeff Moss
On the other side of the door
I can be a different me,
As Smart and as brave and as funny or strong
As a person could want to be.
There’s nothing too hard for me to do,
There’s no place I can’t explore
Because everything can happen
On the other side of the door.
On the other side of the door
I don’t have to go alone.
If you come, too, we can sail tall ships
And fly where the wind has flown.
We’ll find what we’re looking for
Because everything can happen
On the other side of the door.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT KATHY DISLA
|
Hi Caimans,
I hope your first week has been great! To drive our collective purpose, this academic year, we have adopted the acronym Hostos SGA C.A.R.E.S. Here are the details:
C for Community: Work to get the clubs to be more active so that students have more activities to participate in. Also, promote athletic activities, volunteer events, and workshops to help create a greater sense of community for the students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
A for Awareness: Create a campaign to raise awareness about areas of the College, such as the offices that provide services, that some students might not know about (such as the swimming pool), and also identify individuals on campus who can help when students face personal or academic challenges.
R for Resources: Informed by Awareness, develop brochures, posters, and other materials to share with students about different offices (resources) like Hostos One Stop, the Scholarship Office, Career Services, etc. R also stands for Referendum, which is a plan that our group will work on this year to raise the current Student Activity Fee a little bit so that we may provide additional financial resources and services to students and the College.
E for Empathy: To listen to and consider the student body's concerns by putting ourselves in the other person’s shoes and thinking about how each individual must feel about opportunities and challenges on campus. This should allow us to work on programming for the great diversity on our campus and work with the clubs to help them create programming that will explore their values, traditions, and beliefs while also being empathetic to the community.
S for Service: As part of its mission, the SGA is responsible for serving the campus and the community. We hope to continue to partner with campus organizations that do volunteer work but also to enhance our service to the student body by giving campus tours, serving at our information booth, and even speaking on panels and supporting campus-based and community events.
This is still a work in progress, but through our conversations as a group and with you, and the student body, we believe that this is a good place to start.
Muchas gracias,
Kathy

Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director
Dear Students and Colleagues,
I hope that you have had a great first week of classes. As we begin this new semester, I am delighted to report that the new cohort for the NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program for 2023-24 has been selected. Please join me in congratulating Ansumana Jammeh and Renata Tedaldi, who this fall begin their academic journey to fulfilling their dreams of becoming public health professionals. Both students are majoring in liberal arts and sciences, with strong academic backgrounds, high levels of integrity and perseverance, and are deeply committed to advancing public health efforts that will make a difference in promoting the health and well-being of underserved communities. This is a well-deserved achievement for both of our students.
This fall also marks the launch of the expansion of Hostos’ transfer pathways programming with the support of a major federal grant that is funding transfer opportunities to four-year colleges through partnerships with City College and Queens College. Eleven students have been selected for this incredible opportunity, and along with our new cohort of NextGen Public Health Scholars, will receive financial support, resources, and guidance to ensure their educational success and preparation for the next stage of their academic and professional careers. There is much to celebrate at Hostos, and I look forward to sharing updates about Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives, including its achievements and new opportunities that can further propel our students to achieve their dreams.
Sincerely,
Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D.

Ensuring Equitable Access to Higher Education at Hostos: Making Good on Strategic Plan, Goal 1
Change is often easier to talk about and much harder to manifest because it requires a commitment to slowing down long enough to find the small solutions that make measurable outcomes. During the FA23 enrollment period, the Student Success Coaching Unit (SSCU) and the Registrar’s Office developed and set up what Professor Jacki DiSanto described as an “in-the-moment and collegial approach to helping our students: they created a Teams site that served as a triage site for student questions, issues, problems, and solutions. I was so glad I was included in the emails because I got to see how effective and committed our colleagues are to helping our students get the schedules they need.” Professor DiSanto added, “Graciano Matos [Senior Coach, SSCU] reached out to me because the coaches had been keeping waitlists; this led to our opening four additional [Health] sections…[the coaches] got the word out to students. Two sections were filled within 24 hours. The other two have healthy enrollments, and over 100 students were able to get a seat in a class that they needed. Additionally, questions and individual students’ needs were posted on this Team chat, and almost instantaneously, someone offered help or a lead. It was truly impressive.” The same system informed the addition of BIO230 sections, with Professor Julie Trachman in frequent contact with Mr. Matos and with the students on the waitlists.
The beauty of this real-time support is that courses are opened in response to student demand, and students know we are being responsive because someone is reaching out to let them know about a new section.
The first Goal of the new Strategic Plan is to ensure Equitable access to higher education at Hostos for our diverse student population, and a large part of that is removing barriers that prevent Hostos students from accessing the courses they need. These concrete steps of sharing data to inform actions are hard to quantify (yet) but are doing just that.

Affordable Housing Opportunity: Application Deadline is September 12
An affordable housing lottery is open for the new Estela buildings located at 414 and 445 Gerard Avenue, within walking distance from Hostos. Thirty percent of the 550 apartments in the two buildings have been set aside for this housing lottery in two categories, households earning 80% and 130% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments are available through the lottery, with household sizes ranging from one to five people and annual household income limits ranging from $57,429 to $198,250.
For more details on eligibility and to apply, please visit the NYC Housing Connect website to view the posting. If you have applied to other affordable housing lotteries through NYC Housing Connect in the past, you should already have an account set up, which will help streamline the application process.
The deadline to apply is September 12, so if you are interested, act fast and don’t wait until the last minute. It sometimes takes a few days to gather all the information needed for an affordable housing application.
If you have any questions about these items, please email Dr. Radezky at eradezky@hostos.cuny.edu.

POEM TO INSPIRE OUR COMMUNITY
Submitted by VP Yates, Ph.D.
“I, Too”
By Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Let’s Maintain Our Campus Pest Free!
We take this opportunity to remind our College community members to be proactive and help maintain a healthy, safe, and pest-free campus. Bugs, rodents, and similar pests continue to be active in our surrounding environment, but we can all play a role in making sure that we do not extend our welcome to uninvited pests.
If we eliminate any food and nesting sources for rodents, the pests that are on campus will have no choice but to go for the bait, gels, or traps set up by the exterminator. Below are some things we can do in order to prevent or limit any uninvited guests, such as mice, ants, squirrels, and other rodents:
- Pests love it when we leave crumbs, spills, and treats for them. Make sure messes are cleaned up promptly.
- Store food in air-tight containers and keep them in the fridge. Rodents have a remarkable sense of smell and can identify food even in tightly wrapped plastic or Ziploc bags.
- All appliances, such as toasters, ovens, stoves, microwaves, and refrigerators, should be cleaned daily.
- Garbage should be removed at least once daily.
- Be mindful of the accumulation of paper and cardboard boxes; rodents use these items for nesting.
- Notify facilities of any sightings of pests or pest droppings.
The exterminator is scheduled to come to campus weekly. If you have any sightings, please report them to Environmental Health and Safety Director Marya Shuksta at mshuksta@hostos.cuny.edu as soon as possible so the exterminator can attend to that area in their rounds. Thank you for your cooperation!
