MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
|
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
Life has resumed with optimism as we continue to work with our students to ensure that they have settled into a routine that is conducive to learning and that supports persistence. This fall’s growing enrollment speaks to the value of what each of us is doing to ensure that our students are supported and encouraged in their journey to a better life by means of education. Thank you so much for all everyone is doing to come together to ensure that life thrives and learning is firmly supported.
As I write these words, we are poised to welcome the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month and other celebrations. Rosh Hashanah opens the Jewish New Year, which is followed ten days later by the holiest day of the year on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, known as the day of atonement. In the poems selected for sharing in this issue of our Semanario, we honor the diversity represented in the Hostos family, as we respect heritages and embrace our common humanity.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
President

“Cultivo una rosa blanca”
Por José Martí
Cultivo una rosa blanca
en junio como en enero
para el amigo sincero
que me da su mano franca.
Y para el cruel que me arranca
el corazón con que vivo;
cardo ni ortiga cultivo;
cultivo la rosa blanca
“I Have a White Rose to Tend”
By José Martí
I have a white rose to tend
In July as in January;
I give it to the true friend
Who offers his frank hand to me.
And for the cruel one whose blows
Break the heart by which I live,
Thistle nor thorn do I give:
For him, too, I have a white rose.
Translated by Manuel A. Tellechea
“The Late Year”
By Marge Piercy
I like Rosh Hashanah late,
when the leaves are half burnt
umber and scarlet, when sunset
marks the horizon with slow fire
and the black silhouettes
of migrating birds perch
on the wires davening.
I like Rosh Hashanah late
when all living are counting
their days toward death
or sleep or the putting by
of what will sustain them—
when the cold whose tendrils
translucent as a jellyfish
and with a hidden sting
just brush our faces
at twilight. The threat
of frost, a premonition
a warning, a whisper
whose words we cannot
yet decipher but will.
I repent better in the waning
season when the blood
runs swiftly and all creatures
look keenly about them
for quickening danger.
Then I study the rockface
of my life, its granite pitted
and pocked and pickaxed
eroded, discolored by sun
and wind and rain—
my rock emerging
from the veil of greenery
to be mapped, to be
examined, to be judged.

|
Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director
I hope that you are all settled into your classes and have enjoyed the welcoming and orientation activities that the College has offered over the last few weeks. I had previously shared the wonderful news that one of Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives, the NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program, had selected two students for this academic year’s cohort. This week I am delighted to share more good news! The Ms. MacKenzie Scott Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) Scholarship, an initiative that is implemented in partnership with the Continuing Education and Workforce Development Division, has been awarded to six new students who completed a continuing education program and enrolled in a Hostos degree program this semester. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support their enrollment and transition into a degree program, and they will now come that much closer to fulfilling their educational goals.
Please join me in congratulating the Fall 2023 Ms. MacKenzie Scott ACE Scholarship recipients: Lena Bradley, Natasha Garcia, Yasmina Gislaine Glele, Margarita Rosado Mendez, Charina Santos, and Tyesha Toro. This is a wonderful accomplishment for these new students and is a testament to the important work of Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives in providing our students with increased access to resources and opportunities that will provide the needed support and encouragement to advance in their educational and career development.
Sincerely,
Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D.

Using Data to Advance Just Practices and Moral Obligations: Revised Nursing Admissions Process
Hostos was founded, in part, to prepare residents of the South Bronx to meet the hiring needs of Lincoln Hospital and other Bronx-based healthcare providers seeking skilled workers, including Registered Nurses. The college, and the Allied Health faculty, more than met the call: graduates of our Allied Health degrees often achieve post-graduation employment rates of 100% and earn family-sustaining wages.
Not surprisingly, the Nursing AAS (Registered Nursing program) – like Dental Hygiene and Radiologic Technology – is highly competitive, with a limited number of seats and standards required by our accreditors. Over the past years, enrollment in the Nursing AAS degree plan has been approximately 20% (800–1000) of total Hostos enrollment, while only 100–120 students are in the clinical portion of the Nursing degree, to which they apply after completing the Nursing prerequisites. Among the hundreds of students completing prerequisites, an unknown percentage are no longer qualified to apply to Nursing, and without a plan or process for identifying and reaching out to these students, Hostos was not systematically able to connect students to advisors and discuss alternative academic and career pathways.
Led by VP La Toro Yates and Provost Shiang-Kwei Wang, SDEM and OAA, including Allied Health leadership, implemented a revised Nursing RN program admissions process in Spring 2023. They worked closely with Admissions, advisors, and the Registrar to define step-by-step processes to ensure we are informing students about the many resources available to them and systematically communicating when they are on track and when it’s time to talk about alternatives.
To support the revised admissions process, OIERA developed a computer script to analyze data about students admitted in Spring 2023 interested in applying to the Nursing program. Among the ~250 students, 75 individuals earned one grade that does not meet Nursing requirements, and 18 students are disqualified from applying due to their Spring 2023 course outcomes. SDEM, in coordination with Allied Health, is reaching out to students now to ensure they do not continue applying for financial aid without an opportunity to discuss options. The same analysis will be done each semester for all students interested in applying to Nursing. The goal is to communicate early and often to students and to provide immediate guidance and support.
OIERA’s next step is analyzing data for the hundreds of students interested in applying to Nursing before the change in the admissions process. The script is more complicated, and the data is messier, but the analysis is needed to identify those students with whom we need to engage, whether it’s time to redirect their dreams or to congratulate them on their way to joining the Clinical Nursing program.

Highlighting CUNY Policies You Should Know
Submitted by Executive Counsel and Labor Designee Eugene Sohn, Esq.
Jury Duty Policy
Employees summoned to jury duty must notify their immediate supervisor and the Human Resources Office as soon as possible that they have been summoned and must submit a copy of the jury duty summons at this time. While serving jury duty, employees must keep their supervisors updated on a daily basis regarding the expected duration of service. When returning from jury duty, employees are required to submit a copy of the completed jury duty certificate to their supervisor and the Human Resources Office. A completed jury duty certificate will include the employee’s name, dates of jury duty service and the signature or stamp of the appropriate court clerk. If all of the above requirements are met, full-time employees except for certain skilled trade titles will be paid for their time serving jury duty without charge to leave credits. For federal and out of state jury service (as opposed to local or New York state jury service) the same procedure applies, but employees who received pay while performing jury service must reimburse the college if they receive a per diem jury service allowance from the federal or out of state governmental jurisdiction. Reimbursement may be done through the Human Resources payroll unit.
Certain skilled trade titles not entitled to be paid for their jury duty may at their discretion request the use of annual leave instead of receiving the per diem allowance from the court. Part-time employees including college assistants, adjuncts, and other hourly employees will be paid either $40 for each of the first three days of jury service or their regular pay if less, if such employees perform jury service during their regularly scheduled hours of work.

THE PEOPLE’S MONEY: Citywide Participatory Budgeting, Phase 3 Winners Announced
This week’s updates come from the NYC Civic Engagement Commission.
The People’s Money, NYC’s first-ever citywide participatory budgeting process, encouraged all New Yorkers aged 11 and up, regardless of immigration status, to vote to decide how to spend $5 million of Mayoral expense funding in the Fiscal Year 2024 NYC Budget.
From May 10th through June 25th, 2023, tens of thousands of New Yorkers voted on how to spend part of the city budget to address community needs. Residents had the opportunity to vote online or in person, in multiple languages, at sites across the five boroughs.
We thank all Hostos students, faculty, and staff who participated in Phase 1 of the idea-generation process last year and voted in Phase 3 this spring. Here is a full list of all winning projects across the five boroughs.
If you have any questions about these items, please email Dr. Radezky at eradezky@hostos.cuny.edu.

Submitted by Chief Diversity Officer, Title IX Coordinator, and 504/ADA Coordinator Philip Oliveri, Esq.
As we are in the month of September, the Office of Compliance and Diversity would like to highlight that September is recognized as National Hispanic Heritage Month. The City University of New York and Hostos Community College honor the culture and contributions of Hispanics and Latin Americans. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence of Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL STUDENT PARENT MONTH
|
A special announcement submitted by Sarah Hoiland, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Sociology and HOPE Program Director
National Student Parent Month Important Announcements
In September 2022, a bipartisan effort led by US Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) led to the creation of National Student Parent Month. There are nearly 4 million Americans with children who attend postsecondary institutions, and this resolution recognizes the special “tenacity and endurance” of these caregivers and shows that “we have their backs,” according to Senators Moran and Duckworth, respectively.
Nationwide, 20% of college students are parents. At Hostos Community College, approximately 33% of our students are parents or caregivers.
How can you adjust your classroom policies for caregiving students?
Check out the College Transition Collaborative (Equity Accelerator)’s "Creating Student-Centered Policies" and engage in a “Syllabus Review.” Check out Dr. Jessica Leveto’s CTL workshop (recording and slides) at Kent State University.
What rights do pregnant and parenting students have under Title IX?
Discrimination and harassment against pregnant and parenting students on the basis of sex is prohibited. Students who are pregnant, were pregnant, or have a pregnancy-related condition can request breaks, larger desks, supportive programming, time off, and/or a private lactation space.
What kinds of programs and services are available at Hostos?

Holistic Oasis for Parents’ Education (HOPE) Program: HOPE is an on-campus Two-Generation Program for student parents and their children. Student parents take classes during the 7 ½ week extended summer session and participate in holistic programming. Children ages 0-4 can attend Hostos' Children's Center, and kids ages 5-12 can attend the Hostos HOPE STEM Academy. Breakfast, lunch, MetroCards, tuition gap assistance, and childcare are just some of the benefits. The HOPE Program participants are invited to off-campus family events (i.e., New York Botanical Garden, MoMA, Central Park) and lunch-and-learns throughout the academic year.
Information sessions for the 2024 HOPE Program will be held throughout 2023-2024. Questions? Contact Dr. Hoiland at shoiland@hostos.cuny.edu or hope@hostos.cuny.edu, and check out our website and Instagram page.
The HOPE Program is funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant ($2.3M for 2022-2026). Drs. Hoiland, Lee, Jiang, and Professor Valdes-Portela are studying the effectiveness of the HOPE Program’s three-dimensional interventions. This research will advance knowledge and understanding about the types of holistic interventions that are necessary to serve the complex needs of student parents, who comprise approximately one-third of our student population at Hostos.

Initiative to Regain Good Academic Standing Launched!
The Academic Completion Initiative (ACI) is a new project coming out of the Student Success Coaching Unit in SDEM. Dean Sterling, in partnership with Dr. Sheryce Woolery, developed the ACI and launched it as a pilot for the Fall 2023 semester. The idea behind the initiative is to create an all-encompassing support system to assist students on their path to regaining good academic standing. Peer Mentors, alongside Student Success Coaches, will be essential to ACI. To strengthen students’ academic profile, they will support the initiative by ensuring student participation, programming, and social engagement. The Academic Completion Initiative is supported through the generous offer of a grant awarded through Ms. Mackenzie Scott’s Gift.
We are excited about this opportunity to be intentional in building a toolkit to help Hostos’ students develop a growth mindset towards gaining and maintaining academic success.
SDEM Barbeque: NEW DATE!
Friday, September 29, 2023
Did somebody say BBQ? SDEM will host its annual Welcome BBQ Friday, September 29, at Evelina Antonetty Playground, from 12 – 3 p.m. Let’s enjoy the company with laughter, community support, and reunions. See you all there!
Admissions and Recruitment
The Office of Admissions and Recruitment is hosting a series of recruitment activities that seamlessly blend the traditional and digital realms to provide prospective freshmen and transfer students with a comprehensive view of our institution. Our School/Organization Group Tours offer an immersive experience, allowing students to explore our state-of-the-art facilities, engage with administrators, and witness campus life firsthand.
Complementing these group tours are our dynamic Virtual Information Sessions, which provide interactive forums for students to learn about our academic programs, financial aid options, and campus culture from the comfort of their homes, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all.
Financial Aid
In our office, the mission is to empower families in the community by eliminating financial barriers to access to higher education. This is chiefly achieved by raising awareness about the benefits of filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the application for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Moreover, we help students clear an affordable pathway to enrollment, retention, and graduation by providing individualized service to steward them through the application process in our financial aid application center, the Micro Lab.
The Micro Lab is efficiently equipped with eight computer stations and operated by two high-level College Assistants (Unaka and Lidines) along with a team of Federal Work-Study student aides. Throughout this summer, the Micro Lab has been quite busy. From June 2023 – August 2023, one thousand and one hundred forty-three (1,143) students received assistance filing financial aid applications. That is an increase of over 140% compared to last summer (Jun 2022 – Aug 2022) when 473 students visited the Micro Lab!
As a result, we have nearly doubled the amount of TAP applications completed at this time last year [+80%] and equaled the percentage of FAFSAs filed [85%]. Thus far, 60% of all degree-seeking students enrolled in the Fall 2023 semester have filed a TAP application; that’s +30% over last year! In the Fall 2022 semester, we did not reach a 60% TAP application completion rate until December 2022.
We’re happy to continue serving our students and parents! We would be remiss if we did not recognize the year-long strategy, planning, and contribution of the cross-divisional TAP Committee led by SDEM VP Dr. La Toro Yates.
“None of us is as good as ALL of us.”
*To visit the Financial Aid Micro Lab, come speak with a Financial Aid Counselor in the lower level of the D-Building, room D-B112 at 120 East 149th Street, Bronx, NY 10451.

They talked about the associate degree program and the unique student-run studio, Other Possible Games. Watch the entire interview in Spanish here.
English Professor Publishes New Poetry Book
Congratulations to Hostos English Associate Professor Anne Rounds for the publication of her new book Clearing the Stage, a long-form elegy composed in New York City during the unfolding of the Covid pandemic. The suite is in three parts: “Prologue,” “Specimens,” and “Not / Epilogues.” The poems in the “Specimens” section reflect the initial stages of the pandemic in March and April 2020, drawing language from the godfather of New York poetry, Walt Whitman. The prologue and epilogue, while filling traditional roles of poetic beginning and ending, speak to the nebulous character of the pandemic: the notion that it may always be, in some sense, unknown and unfinished. Clearing the Stage invites reader-listeners to meet a historical moment and its aftermath that call out for inclusive poetry. Get the book here.
