MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

My Dear Colleagues and Students,

It was an absolute delight to see so many of you at Constitution Day this past Tuesday morning on September 19. The room was packed with standing room only to experience a panel composed of New York State Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, Justice Bianka Pérez, NYS Supreme Court 12th Judicial District, and Justice Llinet Rosado, NYS Supreme Court Appellate Division. The panel was moderated by La Toro Yates, VP of Student Development and Enrollment Management (SDEM), and Eric Radezky, Director of Governmental and External Affairs. Grazie tanti to all for the support and demonstration of solidarity! Below, I share my brief remarks from the activity.

Eugenio María de Hostos Community College

Constitution Day

September 19, 2023

Brief Remarks

“Preamble

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish the Constitution for the United States of America.”

Welcome to two hours of discussion, exploration, and teaching and learning about the most powerful document of this, our Democracy, forever in the process of becoming a more perfect union, a union that has seen some steps moving forward and some moving back. We are fortunate to live in NY State, where discussions such as this can be held freely.

The sun shines today on Hostos Community College. Honored and delighted to spend time with our students and SGA leaders, our faculty, staff and administration and to welcome together with a warm welcome to our distinguished guests NY State Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, and our Bronx Supreme Court Justices Bianka Perez and Llinet Rosado. We have created for our community activities designed to inform and celebrate living in the most democratic nation in the world.

Three more important items to note: We need to inform ourselves and to register and to vote for candidates who respect who we are, what we represent in this nation formed by the values encapsulated in the phrase “e pluribus unum,” out of many, one nation; a nation that aspires to receive many with open arms and that grows stronger because of the hard work, support, and aspirations of so many. Finally, our voices need to continue to be heard. We ask our students and our SGA to continue to advocate on behalf of democracy and to serve as ambassadors to all at Hostos. The time is now.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEMS TO WELCOME HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND THE JEWISH NEW YEAR

“The New Colossus”

By Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT KATHY DISLA

Dear Caimans,

I’d like to share my Fall 2023 SGA Inauguration remarks, delivered on September 12.

Opening Remarks

President Kathy Disla

I would like to thank everyone who made the time to come to our Inauguration and support the 2023-2024 Student Government Association.

When I started at Hostos last year, I was very nervous because, at the time, I didn't know anyone, and I felt lost. I was concerned about how hard my classes were going to be and how the professors were going to treat me, and also, I thought it was going to be very difficult for me to make new friends. By the end of the semester, I realized how wrong I was. I met someone on campus who introduced me to many of the resources that the College offers students. It was because of that person I gained a world of experience, I found a job on campus, and I was introduced to Jerry Rosa and Jason Libfeld. The efforts of that one professor, who took the time to listen to me and learn about me, led me on my extraordinary journey here at Hostos.

At my job in the Student Success Coaching Unit and working at the SGA Information Booth, I learned about the many challenges that students face on their journey. The most common one is the financial struggle that comes along with attending school and living in the city. As a group, the SGA is committed to doing everything possible to help students overcome that particular challenge. Therefore, we plan to introduce the SGA Scholarships and many other opportunities to help students in need.

Your Hostos Student Government is here for you, but we also need to HEAR from you and have you be partners with us this year. First of all, I want to ask you all to take some time and fill out our new survey for 2023-2024. We want you to let us know what you think the campus needs to be more valuable to you. We also want to hear how you feel about Hostos and the community so that we can speak about those things with our wonderful President and at the College-Wide Senate, where we represent all of the students. We also want to ask you to come out and participate in all of the events that are being planned (if you have the time to be there) by the Student Government, the clubs and organizations, and the College itself. We truly want you to be a part of everything exciting that's going on here on campus and not only just come and attend class and go home. What I learned in my time here is that the point of college is to celebrate all the new experiences that exist, and I feel that the events are the best way for all of us to dive into all the amazing things Hostos has to offer.

I am very proud that when all the members of my team decided to join the Student Government, we all had a passion for sharing knowledge with our fellow students about all of the resources and opportunities that are available here. It is our mission to make sure that every student knows that they will always have a friend, they should never have to worry about their classes or their professors, and they can always come to us for help or just to talk. Personally, as a student, I know all the challenges that we face, and I want to let you know that each member of my team is committed to making life at Hostos for every student an incredible experience.

Thank you.

MS. MACKENZIE SCOTT’S GIFT: PRESIDENT’S INITIATIVES

Submitted by Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D., Research Programs Director

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I hope that you are continuing to have a productive semester. I have important updates to share regarding the Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus initiative for the 2023-24 academic year. Since it was established last spring as one of Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives, this program has made great strides in providing Hostos students with valuable work experience and supportive mentoring to ensure their academic success. Each semester, it supports up to 25 student positions across various academic and administrative departments. We are also working to find additional funding sources that can support more positions as we are very committed to providing students with this financial resource and career development opportunity.

I have good news to share with departments and students who want to participate in this initiative. We have eight Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus slots currently available, and I want to invite departments that are interested in hiring a new student and students seeking an on-campus job opportunity to apply online. Students are eligible to apply if they are currently enrolled as part-time/full-time students and have a minimum GPA of 2.7. Please note these opportunities are available to students regardless of immigration or financial aid status.

Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus 2023-24 Department Application (use CUNYFirst log-in)

Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus 2023-24 Student Application (use CUNYFirst log-in)

To expand the reach of this initiative, we are also planning to pilot a collaboration with the Federal Work Study program in Spring 2024 that will provide a small cohort of students employed through federal work-study the opportunity to apply to work through Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus during the period from mid-May to end of June, which is not covered by federal work-study. This is a great way for students to leverage the financial aid they have been awarded and continue to receive support during this gap period. Stay tuned for more updates as we roll out this new collaboration.

Sincerely,

Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D.

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT (OIERA)

Submitted by Dean Babette Audant, Ph.D.

Hostos' 2023-28 Strategic Plan, Elevating Justice, is grounded in our mission and reflects the collective work done by nearly 100 staff and faculty to articulate our six pillars as strategies for supporting student success. Our plan is informed by the 2022 Self-Study and the recommendations we made to ourselves for improvement across the institution.

The Hostos plan is closely aligned with CUNY’s newly launched 2023-2030 Strategic Roadmap: Lifting New York – we share a commitment to supporting socioeconomic mobility for students who seek intellectual growth and fulfillment while preparing for careers to support themselves and their families. Goal 1 of Lifting New York (like Hostos' Goal 1) is focused on access to higher education. Strategies include modernized approaches to admissions, financial aid and course scheduling – strategies implemented at Hostos during the last enrollment cycle that yielded ~10% growth in enrollment and a significant increase in first-year retention of first-time full-time freshmen (FTFTF) who started in Fall 2022 (preliminary analysis: ~58% 1-year retention of FA22 FTFTF versus 52.6% 1-year retention of FA21 FTFTF).

Other CUNY Goal 1 strategies include a focus on "seamless transfer" amongst CUNY institutions, a drive for more equitable transfer of credits as students move from associate to 4-year degrees. This strategy aligns with Hostos' Goal 5 which calls on us to strengthen transfer to 4-year degrees and beyond. Transfer Explorer (TREX) is a public-facing tool that allows students, advisors, faculty, et.al., to look for course-to-course equivalencies across CUNY and many non-CUNY institutions. It is used to inform work in Transfer Services, advisement, and curriculum development; TREX's developers are adding equivalencies for industry credentials and certifications, supporting the award of credit for prior learning.

Key performance indicators (KPIs) are included in the CUNY Strategic Roadmap, and many are the same as what we will track, including enrollment and retention. Hostos' plan does not have 5-year targets (although our annual operational plans will include targets); CUNY's plan does, including an increase in community college enrollment of 18.5% over five years and a 15% increase in 1-year retention at community colleges, to 57%. Bragging a bit, this year's all-hands-on-deck enrollment cycle, led by SDEM, achieved better than this. Our challenge is to sustain our gains.

In brief, while we head into our first year of implementing Elevating Justice, CUNY's Strategic Roadmap will be in dialogue with our strategic plan, a point of reference, and a way of viewing our efforts as part of a city-wide movement as we make change in and for the South Bronx.

Free Broadband Now Available to 150,000 NYCHA Households

This week’s updates come from the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit.

Mayor Adams announced the expansion of “Big Apple Connect” to 17 new public housing developments — contributing to the delivery of free in-home internet and basic cable TV to a total of more than 150,000 households citywide. This expansion builds on the success of the program’s first two phases, which prioritized New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments with limited or no subsidized broadband options.

NYC's Office of Technology and Innovation officially launched Big Apple Connect in September 2022 to ensure that NYCHA residents have access to free, fast, reliable, and safe internet. NYCHA residents without existing home internet will be able to sign up for Big Apple Connect with either Optimum or Spectrum (the service provider will depend on where you live). Existing Optimum and Spectrum customers will have their bills reduced to as low as $0, as monthly internet and basic cable TV charges are eliminated.

NYCHA residents in eligible developments are eligible to receive:

  • FREE internet connections with download speeds of up to 300 Mbps
  • FREE wireless router
  • FREE modem
  • FREE basic cable TV
  • FREE cable box and remote control

If you are a NYHCA resident, check your eligibility here.

Additional Resources:

  • Food Help NYC: Free food locations, including food pantries & soup kitchens.
  • NYC Well: NYC Well is your connection to free, confidential crisis counseling, mental health and substance use support, information, and referrals. You can reach the toll-free helpline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by phone, text, and online chat.
  • Buildings After Hours: Free in-person information session with DOB staff every Tuesday from 4 PM to 7 PM at your local borough office.
  • Notify NYC: Enroll for free in New York City’s dedicated emergency public communications program.
  • 311: Non-emergency municipal services are available online by texting 311-692 or by calling 3-1-1 from within the City or 212-NEW-YORK outside the five boroughs. TTY service is also available by dialing 212-504-4115.

If you have any questions about these items, please email Dr. Radezky at [email protected].

Hostos Joins CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium

The Office of Compliance and Diversity is pleased to announce that Hostos Community College has joined other CUNY colleges to be a member of the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium, through which faculty, staff and students will archive LGBTQIA+ history across New York, and support LGBTQIA+ training, education, and programming at the colleges. The Consortium is comprised of CUNY community colleges, four-year institutions, and professional schools in all five boroughs of New York City. The CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium is a significant enterprise representing LGBTQIA+ support throughout the CUNY system. Hostos’ involvement reflects our commitment to inclusivity and raising awareness by promoting, advancing and supporting previously marginalized groups, specifically the LGBTQIA+ community.

Led by Jewel Jones, the Associate Director of the Office of Compliance and Diversity, Hostos will be planning several events throughout this academic year at the campus in collaboration with other Hostos organizations, faculty, staff and students. If you have any questions, would like to support our efforts and/or are interested in getting involved, please email Jewel Jones at [email protected].

Stephanie is from a small town in the interior of northeastern Brazil. She arrived in the U.S. two years ago as part of an Au Pair-sponsored exchange program, where she cared for small children. At the end of her second exchange year, Stephanie decided to pursue her dream of getting a degree in Nursing. Despite facing several challenges, she completed the Patient Care Technician program at Hostos Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) division. In the Fall 2022 semester, Stephanie started taking prerequisites for the Nursing program.

She is currently part of the Hostos Student Leadership Academy and has been selected to represent Hostos in the Giving Tuesday videos facilitated by the Central Office. She is also part of the CUNY Peer Leaders Program for Academic Year (AY) 23-24 and has been awarded the HSI Scholarship for AY 23-24 by the American Heart Association. As part of this scholarship, Stephanie will have the opportunity to participate in research and professional development opportunities with Health Professionals. “Heritage”

By Gwendolyn B. Bennett

I want to see the slim palm-trees,

Pulling at the clouds

With little pointed fingers …

I want to see lithe Negro girls,

Etched dark against the sky

While sunset lingers.

I want to hear the silent sands,

Singing to the moon

Before the Sphinx-still face …

I want to hear the chanting

Around a heathen fire

Of a strange black race.

I want to breathe the Lotus flow’r,

Sighing to the stars

With tendrils drinking at the Nile…

I want to feel the surging

Of my sad people’s soul

Hidden by a minstrel-smile.

Catering Policy and Procedure

With the start of the new fall semester, your department, unit, or student group may be planning to hold events with catered food. As a reminder, A La Carte Menu Services Inc., in addition to being the Hostos Café vendor, is the exclusive catering provider for the College. That means that all catering requests must go through A La Carte first. Exceptions may be requested by contacting the Hostos Cafe Catering Manager (phone: 718-516-6544; email: [email protected]) no less than three weeks prior to the date of the event. Any department or student group granted an exception to use an outside food vendor for an event hosted on the college campus must also notify the Hostos Office of Environmental Health & Safety three weeks prior to the event. Off-campus food caterers must comply with the New York City Department of Health requirements for food handling, including, but not limited to, food sanitation procedures and catering license.

The Hostos Catering policy and procedures can be found on the Hostos Catering web page. To assist you with your catering order, per-person spending thresholds and allowable expenses are listed in the Hostos Catering Policy. If your event meets all university criteria detailed in the Catering Business Procedures page, then you may proceed with initiating a food order. The process must be initiated at least 10 working days in advance of your event.

If you have any questions about the catering policy and procedure, please contact the Procurement Office (phone: 718-319-7959; email: [email protected]).

185 CEWD Students Received Full Scholarships to Enroll in Occupational Training Courses

LaGuardia Community College and Hostos Community College launched a new initiative to help low-income New Yorkers living in Queens and the Bronx, whom the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the most. With funding from The New York Community Trust, applicants may obtain access to low or no-cost occupational training programs. Over the course of 19 months (January 2022 – July 2023), CEWD provided full tuition scholarships, which also covered books and exam fees for students enrolling in the following NYC Accelerated Recovery Hub training programs: Certified Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, CompTIA, Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Billing and Coding, as well as EKG/Phlebotomy as an upskill opportunity for Certified Nursing Assistants.

To date, 185 CEWD students enrolled in the NYC Accelerated Recovery Hub scholarship program, and 149 students (81%) completed their training program. Of the 149 students who completed, 69 students successfully obtained an industry-recognized certificate, and another 68 are waiting to take their certification exams with external credentialing bodies so they can obtain an industry-recognized certificate.

The NYC Accelerated Workforce Recovery Hub scholarship program has given students the opportunity to achieve their dreams. For Lorraine Ortiz, this scholarship helped her realize her dream of pursuing a career in healthcare while also setting an example for her children and grandchildren. Ms. Ortiz began her journey at Hostos in 2013 when she earned her GED after completing a CEWD GED class. To pursue her goal of entering the healthcare sector, Ms. Ortiz used the NYC Accelerated Workforce Recovery Hub scholarship to enroll in CEWD’s Certified Nursing Assistant certification program.
