MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
My Dear Colleagues and Students,
Life on campus reflects hope as we continue to work with our students to ensure that they have settled into a routine that is conducive to learning and that supports persistence. This fall’s steady growth in enrollment speaks to the value of what each of us is doing to ensure that our students are supported and encouraged in their journey to a better life by means of education. Thank you so much for all that each of you—faculty, staff and administration— is doing to come together to ensure that life thrives and learning is firmly supported at Hostos.
As I write these words, we are poised to welcome the beginning of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and other celebrations. In the poem selected for sharing we celebrate a Mexican-American woman writer, as we welcome a series of activities designed to honor Hispanic/Latinx Culture (see information in section in this issue of El Semanario).
It was good to see colleagues and students at last Friday’s barbeque to welcome students back to school for the fall semester. Please join us for the Stated Meeting of the College (first All College meeting) on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 12:30 p.m.; lunch will be served at 12. I look forward to seeing you there and to our presentations and discussions.
Mil gracias y bendiciones,
Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

“Chris Martin Sings ‘Shiver’ and I Shiver: A Poem for Madam Vice President” (fragment)
By Felicia Zamora
……………………………………………………………………………………
This poem is for Kamala Harris. Madam Vice President Kamala Harris.
This poem is for my little brown body between my grandfather & the television, alert & still not running
away, demand to be seen. This poem is for my moon boots, thrift store gems, & the tip
of the right boot in that kid’s groin. This poem is for my mother who wrote nine children’s
books in the ‘80s & not one accepted for publication. This poem is for the Bear that Changes
Colors, Glasses for Tommy Tiger, Betty Butterfly’s Strange Mirror, & the author’s signature: Linda
Zamora. For that reason I became a poet-to write a poem to Madam Vice President-to say
the word possibility & believe it. This poem is for the trillions of false litanies to women-You
can’t X. Can’t Y. Don’t Z ………………………………………………………………
This match burns these all down. This poem is for women. This poem is for Trans women.
This poem is for Queer women. This poem is for Black women. This poem is for Brown
Women. This poem is for Truth & Tubman & Parks. This poem is for Dove & hooks &
Sanchez. This poem is for Anzaldúa, Baez, Cisneros. This poem is for women. This poem
Is for Madam Vice President Kamala Harris. This poem is for how Martin sings “Shiver”
as I shiver at your smile. I shiver for the necessity of shivering long overdue, shivers of shivers.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA) PRESIDENT DAINMA MARTÍNEZ
Welcome Back, Everyone!
Let’s go, Hostos! Hope you had a great second week! I know that many new students are still trying to get around the feeling of being here at Hostos but remember that we are here to help. Hostos offers many different resources on campus, ranging from the Career Center in the D-building, where they help with your resumes, look for jobs, and even help you get fancy for an interview. Then we have the wonderful Counseling Center, where they are there if you are feeling overwhelmed or just need someone to listen. Stop by one of the counseling offices in the C-building’s third floor. Those are a few great resources here at Hostos, and not that far from there, you can stop by the SGA booth to find more information about things happening on and around campus.
Now let's get to the fun part! SGA will host our Spirit Week in a few days (Monday, September 16). The week will start with Monday Twin Day, Tuesday Future Career Day, Wednesday Sports Day, Thursday ThrowBack, and Friday School Rep Day. Throughout the week, we will be posting on SGA’s Instagram account with everyone's top spotlight ‘fit for the theme! So come ready to be snapped and posted. Let's start our semester with some fun in the sun! Goodies will be handed out, and those who match the theme best will be entered in our raffle! So remember, follow SGA on Instagram (@sgahostos) and spread the word!
Keep an eye out for so many great events; check out the Hostos Instagram (@hostoscollege) or our SGA’s account to keep updated on what’s happening now. As the days get busy and challenges pile up, don’t let yourself be swept away by worry. Remember, we’re all in this together — navigating classes, goals, and ambitions. College is a time for growth and discovery, so embrace the journey. Even when things feel tough, lean on your support system and know that each small step brings you closer to your dreams. Keep going — you’ve got this!
Sincerely,
Dainma Martínez

Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus Career Development Day
This summer Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives continued to support students’ career development. Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus employed 15 students across various departments, and ten students worked as research assistants supporting faculty and staff-led ADELANTE research projects across multiple disciplines. To further enhance the students’ professional development, the Office of the President and the Career Services Office hosted a Career Development Day on August 20, 2024, for both mentors and mentees, offering educational workshops on communication skills to promote relationship-building and interviewing techniques for mentees. Special certificates of recognition honoring mentors and mentees were also presented. Our students also had the wonderful opportunity to meet President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, who joined the mentee sessions and engaged in our discussion on interviewing practices. The workshops were facilitated by Ms. Lisanette Rosario, Director of Career Services, and Ms. Laura Hand, Assistant Director of Career Services, who did a phenomenal job leading informative and engaging workshops for our participants. The collaboration with the Office of Career Services has been invaluable in strengthening the resources provided to our students participating in Mentor/Mentee Jobs on Campus and ADELANTE research projects.

Strategic Progress Indicators Updates: First Year Seminar (FYS)
The Hostos 2023-28 Strategic Plan, Goal 1, Strategy 1 is “Implement a comprehensive and integrated First Year Experience program for all Hostos students.” This is a commitment we made to Hostos students and is based on national research that demonstrates the importance of institution-wide accountability for, and engagement of, students throughout their first year. Effective First Year Experience programs positively impact retention, course completion and graduation outcomes by helping students develop and sustain a sense of belonging. For Hostos students who are majority minority and majority first-gen college students, the importance of a sense of belonging can’t be understated.
Among the common elements of FYE is a First Year Seminar (FYS) course, which is offered at Hostos. Our FYS is a three-credit course required of Liberal Arts AA students and has been positively correlated with outcomes including GPA and one-term retention. It is taught by faculty across disciplines and is designed to prepare students for academic success. OIERA’s report illustrates that among the first-time freshmen (FTF) Fa18, 19 and 20 cohorts of Lib Arts AA graduates who completed their degrees within three years or less, 210/228 (92%) completed FYS and 224/228 (98%) completed Capstone. However, the timing of FYS completion defies the purpose of FYS as a foundation for academic success.
The chart below illustrates this opportunity to communicate loudly and often the value of FYS for new students: Among the first time freshmen entering in Fa22 and Fa23, 62% and 25%, respectively, enrolled in FYS in their first year, and 29% and 9%, respectively, completed FYS. We have an opportunity to make clear the expectation that all Liberal Arts AA students complete this course in their first semester (ideal) or their first year and to increase both the attempt and completion rates for FYS, building on year over year gains in students who attempt and complete Gateway Math in their first year. OAA, tasked with managing the evolution toward comprehensive FYE in close coordination with SDEM, has taken steps to address these opportunities head on including faculty-led work to strengthen FYE pedagogical strategies.

Do You Qualify for the Fair Fares MetroCard Program?
Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help New Yorkers with low incomes manage their transportation costs. Using the Fair Fares NYC MetroCard, eligible New York City residents receive a 50% discount on subway and eligible bus fares. Pay-per-Ride, weekly unlimited, and monthly unlimited options are all available. Fair Fares can also provide 50% off MTA Access-A-Ride paratransit trips. Because Access-A-Ride customers do not use a MetroCard their discount is applied automatically to their Access-A-Ride trips once their Fair Fares and Access-A-Ride accounts are linked.
To qualify you must be between the ages of 18 and 64, live in New York City, meet income limits (see website), and not receive a discounted MetroCard from any other New York City program.
Visit the Fair Fares website to check your eligibility, create an account and apply.

New York State SmartScholars Early College program launches in the Office of School-College Partnerships
By Elizabeth Wilson, Director of School College Partnerships
The Hostos Office of School-College Partnerships, in collaboration with Mott Haven Village Prep High School (MHVP) won a SmartScholars grant from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to create an early college cohort partnered with Media Design at Hostos. This 5-year, $825,000 grant serves a cohort of students each year at MHVP to take courses in alignment with Media Design. Each year, 25 students will join the cohort in 9th grade.
The program kicked off with a summer institute in July 2024 for students entering 9th grade. The goal was to cultivate a sense of college identity and establish a personal connection with Hostos as they began on their pathway into their program of study.
Eleven incoming 9th-grade SmartScholar students and high school teachers spent two weeks at the College with Professor Devanie Rosario (Media Design Unit), participating in Game Design and College Skills workshops. Students learned email and computer basics and the process of creating a game, whether it is a board game or a video game, through exercises to help them understand design elements, including space, components, mechanics, goals, and rules. Students had the opportunity to visit the Hostos Incubator, where Professor Matthew R.F. Baloušek was working on a non-profit gaming project with his team. He explained the process of creating, refining, playtesting, and evaluating a game.
Additionally, the students engaged in a Hostos tour and college workshop led by CUNY Explorers, which are Hostos students led and spearheaded by Campus Coordinator Joey Snavely. They all participated in an ABADA-Capoeira workshop and Social-Emotional Learning Connection and Transition workshops led by high school staff. They also enjoyed a movie outing and final celebration.

POEMS TO INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY
“People Get Ready”
By The Impressions
People get ready
There's a train a-coming
You don't need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank the Lord
So people get ready
For the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers' coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board 'em
There's hope for all
Among those loved the most
There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just to save his own (believe me now)
Have pity on those
Whose chances grow thinner
For there's no hiding place against the Kingdom's Throne
So people get ready
There's a train a-comin'
You don't need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank the Lord

Cafeteria Vendor Search Update
The Cafeteria Vendor search process is moving along. The Proposal Review committees of each of the three campuses have reviewed and scored the proposals. The campus Procurement Directors and their respective Administration and Finance leaders have reviewed the proposers’ financials. After the finalists have been identified, the next steps are to hold interviews and check references. All three campuses are hoping to wrap up the search soon, so that the selected vendor can begin operations in the fall semester. An announcement will be made when the finalist is selected.
In the interim, the Farmer’s Fridge on the third floor of the C Building (outside the Cafeteria) has been stocked with fresh, nutritious offerings. Farmer’s Fridge visits thrice a week to restock items to guarantee freshness. Menu items include a variety of salads, sandwiches, bowls, chia puddings, yogurts, and healthy snacks. You can also download their app to reserve items at the Fridge and earn rewards on Fridge purchases.

A New Chapter for the Hostos Art Gallery After a 23-Year Residency

The decision to conclude the successful partnership will enable us to support diverse artistic voices while also providing our students with valuable exhibition opportunities.
We are grateful to BCA and the Longwood Art Project for their invaluable contributions to the community. This transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for both institutions, and we look forward to exploring innovative ways to collaborate and serve the Bronx.
