MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS
Dear Colleagues and Students,

I am happy to write this morning, as a number of religious celebrations and spring break activities get underway this coming Monday, to thank you for your generous participation in the Middle States Commission on Higher Education Self-Study Evaluation Team virtual visit of Eugenio María de Hostos Community College in the many small and some larger meetings to speak of your contributions and thoughts about Hostos and our collective work. Dr. Clayton A. Railey III, Chair of the Visiting Team and members Dr. Patricia Benson, Dr. Scheherezade West Forman, Dr. Samuel Hirsch, Dr. Fawad Rafi, Ms. Beth Ritter Guth and Dr. Melissa R. Sande joined us from Sunday afternoon, April 3 until late morning of April 6.

The Campus-wide exit remarks, well attended by the Hostos family, affirmed our work and celebrated our diligence. Opening remarks were: “Saludos Hostos! The Visiting Team would like to thank President Daisy Cocco De Filippis and all of her colleagues for producing a passionate, elegant and thoughtful Self-Study”. It was a day of celebration for us. Now we await the next steps and begin to discuss the organization of the Planning Team for the Eugenio María de Hostos Community College Strategic Plan 2023–2028. Close to 100 colleagues have accepted participation in the Steering Committee and the six pillars subcommittees. Mil gracias y bendiciones to all.

I take this opportunity as well to offer thanks to our dear members of the Hostos family, represented here in the membership of the Self-Study Steering Committee, mil gracias. Our wonderful co-Chairs Dr. Nelson Nuñez-Rodríguez and Dr. Kate Wolfe and Dean Babette Audant produced a powerful document.

The Hostos Self-Study Steering Committee ably and collegially led by Profs. Wolfe and Nuñez-Rodríguez these past three years have produced a thorough document, reflecting who we are. They did so by involving over one hundred members of subcommittees and keeping the entire college engaged, as they transitioned from one retiring president to an incoming one in August of 2020 and through a pandemic.

The results are reflected in a document that speaks to the value of our beloved Eugenio María de Hostos Community College as the dynamic, transformative educational engine it has been for over five decades. Hostos has served, with quality programs and strong academic and student support services, the poorest congressional district in the nation for over fifty years because all of us here at Hostos understand our roles. As I am often reminded by so many stellar examples, we believe that one comes to Hostos not for self-serving purposes, but for the greater good, by transforming families by means of bringing socio-economic mobility through education to a very fragile population.

These efforts have been recognized nationally and will continue to move us forward, with the understanding that our work is far from done, and that this opportunity to see achievements, identify areas in need of improvement, and by coming together in common cause will continue to sustain Hostos, in the words of our biologist/chemist/poet-in-residence Professor Nuñez-Rodríguez, drawing a parallel from an Amanda Gorman poem, “a college that roars, springs and sings.” And if I may add, sings in a chorus of multiple diverse voices, celebrating the commitment embraced by all to bring equity and social justice to a very deserving student population and the communities we serve.

I look forward to our discussions as we plan for our next Strategic Plan (2023–2028) in the coming days and months.

Mil gracias y bendiciones, Daisy

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

A POEM TO CELEBRATE THIS MOMENT
Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem
By Amanda Gorman

I’m a movement that roars and springs
There’s a wave where my change sings.
Change sings where?
There! Inside me.
Because I'm the change I want to see...
I'm the voice where freedom rings.
You're the love your bright heart brings.
We are the wave starting to spring,
for we are the change we sing.

MESSAGE FROM SGA PRESIDENT BRIAN CARTER
Good Morning my Hostos community:

This week’s update includes several important announcements and reminders.

One: any student who knows of a pregnant person, we are offering resources through the Bridge Project (BP). Through the BP, a pregnant person can receive up to $1,000 a month for three years with no strings attached. The criteria are as follows, they must be pregnant and living in one of the eligible zip codes in Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, the South Bronx, or Central Bronx. They must have an annual household income under $52,000 and no SSN or ITIN information is required. Qualified candidates must apply by April 13, 2022, at noon. Fill out the application at The Bridge Project.

The SGA believes that technology is essential for students to learn effectively and perform at their highest level. Hostos offers self-paced, fully-online training courses in Blackboard. Check them out! Two helpful courses in the training module are e-Portfolios Online and Microsoft Office Online Learning. Each training module offers information, videos, and quizzes. For each section completed, a course certificate is generated for your records.

All students enrolled at Hostos Community College can visit the Student Help Desk in C-595 to seek help with accessing Blackboard, MS Office, Hostos email and CUNYfirst issues. The main phone contact is 718-518-6502 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We are holding additional financial literacy workshops with Saddique Mohamed titled, “Money Moves” with the hopes of empowering students to make wise investments and learn the difference between “wants” and “needs” to properly budget their finances.

Lastly, do you need an internship to graduate? Contact Career Services to find out about opportunities available to Hostos students who want to work, earn money, earn academic credit, gain relevant experience, enhance their resume and career portfolio, and network with experienced professionals. There are a lot of great opportunities right now, so go after them!
MIDDLE STATES SELF-STUDY UPDATE
Submitted by MSCHE Steering Committee Co-Chairs Professor Kate S. Wolfe and Professor Nelson Nuñez-Rodríguez

The institution hosted the virtual on-site MSCHE re-accreditation visit this week and the Steering Committee wants to say thank you to all Hostos community members. The institution concludes this phase of the re-accreditation process showing commitment and maturity as no extension was required to conclude this three-year process despite the pandemic impact. The institution showed growth and focus. The final document was recognized as a strong piece even from the 2021 November preliminary visit. Overall, our document embodies aspirations and logical conclusions built on assessment processes.

Looking into the future, the Hostos 2023–28 Strategic Plan crafting process is taking off. Indeed, several Hostos members previously engaged in the self-study will use their expertise and knowledge regarding assessment and planning, partially developed during the Self-Study. This 2023–28 planning represents another concrete manifestation to substantiate our aspirations and mission fulfillment actions.
PRESIDENT’S INITIATIVES
Submitted by Director of Research Programs Sofia Oviedo, Ph.D.

Dear Students and Colleagues,

This week the college was full of activity as we hosted a visit from the Middle States re-accreditation Committee capping off many years of hard work and preparation. I am hopeful that the feedback received from the committee will provide helpful insights and recommendations that we can use to further strengthen our organizational practices and build a stronger Hostos community.

I am also delighted to provide some important updates and deadlines regarding the new opportunities for students available through the Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiatives.

On Tuesday we invited students to attend a virtual information session for our newest initiative, the NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program, which will provide an incredible opportunity for students interested in serving as public health practitioners and leaders by offering scholarship support and resources to help them achieve their goals. We plan on having another virtual information session next week so we will keep you posted on the date and time.

The NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program application deadline is April 30 and I encourage all interested students to get started right away and download the application here.

The Jobs on Campus is another new initiative that has also gotten underway. All students interested in getting a part-time job working on campus this spring or over the summer need to apply online through the Career Services HIRECAIMANS Symplicity portal. Jobs on Campus will pay students $20/hour for a maximum of 10 hours a week, and opportunities are available to students regardless of immigration and financial aid status.

Students are encouraged to visit Career Services to obtain career-readiness support that is available for students in-person and in virtual formats. Please visit Succeed@Hostos to schedule an appointment.

To apply for the Jobs on Campus, follow the steps below:

The deadline for students to apply for spring and summer job opportunities is April 15.

Academic and administrative departments can still submit a Jobs on Campus application to offer jobs for the Summer 2022.

Application deadline for the Summer is April 29, 2022.

Hostos departments and offices can access the Jobs on Campus application here.

Academic departments are also invited to submit student selection forms for the Ms. MacKenzie Scott Academic Awards of Excellence. Each department will have the opportunity to award $2,000 in scholarships to selected students graduating this spring with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better.

The deadline to submit student nominations is April 29, 2022.

For more information and to request a form please email Sofia Oviedo at [email protected] | Tel: 718-518-4309.
INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESEARCH, AND ASSESSMENT
Submitted by Dr. Babette Audant, Dean of Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness, Research and Assessment

The experience of peer evaluation: conversation, curiosity and collegiality

This past week, the Hostos community was engaged in the team visit stage of our re-accreditation process. As the date approached, it was hard to deny the strength of our self-study report, a 100-page narrative that distills the contributions of 100+ staff, faculty and students guided by our Self-Study co-chairs Professors Kate Wolfe and Nelson Nunez-Rodríguez, organizing the past to create forward momentum. And, I found myself growing anxious about the questions our peers might ask of us. Was the evidence we provided sufficient, and coherent? Did our peers have time to talk to the people on campus who would illuminate their understanding? Would the report and their interactions with us, over Zoom, convey what makes Hostos unique…and communicate that we’ve met the standards?

I’m writing this on Monday evening, with another two days to go before the report written by the team of generous and curious peers has been completed. I am confident that Hostos will be evaluated fairly, and that our peers will add depth and perspective to our self-assessment.

The tone of the visit was articulated on Sunday by our team chair, Dr. Clayton Railey, who emphasized that the next few days should be a conversation among peers. He reminded us that this moment in the Self-Study is an invitation to learn together, and that we are all starting from a place of care, and of love, for the mission that guides us, and a shared understanding of the role of community colleges. Our peers, who all work at community colleges within the MSCHE region, are invested in this process with us.
The questions asked by our peers thus far have been concrete, expressing a desire to know how things work, to hear us explain how policies and processes are implemented, and to hear multiple voices. The small group (and sometimes individual) interviews are scheduled to clarify aspects of the report. In doing so, we’re learning about the team members, and about the institutions where they work. The commonalities emerge quickly; among other things, the pandemic smacked us all, and we’re all in the early stages of learning from an abrupt interruption of life as we knew it.

We were commended at least twice today for the clear organization of the self-study report; a peer later mentioned how relieved she was that we were strategic about selecting evidence to support the narrative, rather than uploading every bit of what might be relevant and overwhelming our visiting team.

Two days remain of this high-stakes virtual visit, this opportunity to engage in a broader conversation that helps us view ourselves as uniquely Hostos and as part of a dynamic national higher education landscape. I look forward to being at the other side of these two days and am looking forward to sustaining the good practices and momentum generated by this awesome, generous collective effort that is Hostos.

When Great Trees Fall
By Maya Angelou

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

CUNYfirst Campus Solutions upgrade to PeopleSoft 9.2

CUNY CIS is planning to launch the CUNYfirst Campus Solutions upgrade to PeopleSoft 9.2 over the spring break in April 2022 (April 15-22). This second phase of the upgrade extends the new PeopleSoft 9.2 improvements across all of CUNYfirst, including the new tile-based CUNYfirst home page. Campus Solutions directly impacts our student enrollment and support processes, as well as the academic integration aspects such as grade submissions for faculty. The Hostos IT team is currently coordinating communications across the campus, the divisions and their respective departments to ensure students, faculty, and staff are aware of the upgrade and are able to receive the appropriate training.

CUNY CIS is providing live and recorded training on PeopleSoft 9.2 upgrade topics, including an introduction to the new CUNYfirst navigation and Campus Solutions training on select topics and job aids for specific tasks. CIS Training will also provide training to the college help desk staff to help them with providing support to the college user community.

CUNY CIS has shared the upgrade details for the CUNYfirst Campus Solutions module with the planned activities to occur during Spring Break. The process will impact all three pillars to varying degrees per the below tentative schedule:
  1. Current Campus Solutions 9.0 to be unavailable starting April 14.
  2. Finance and HR to be unavailable starting April 16.
  3. Reporting instance to be unavailable April 16 – 19.
  4. All instances to be fully operational by Tuesday, April 19.

Information about the upgrade as well as access to training can be found on the CUNYfirst web page. Additional Hostos campus-specific information and resources can be found at www.hostos.cuny.edu/cunyfirst and will be shared via email.
FY 2022 Deadline for Purchase Requisition Submissions

As we prepare to end the 2022 Fiscal Year on June 30, 2022, kindly take note of the following important dates. The last day to submit fully-approved and valid budget-checked Purchase Requisitions is Friday, April 15, 2022, at 5 p.m.

Note: Equipment, furniture, or other items that cannot be delivered or rendered by June 30, 2022, will be processed in FY 2023. Requisitions entered into the CUNYfirst eProcurement system after this date are subject to rejection.

Timely submission of all requisitions will ensure purchases are charged to the appropriate budget categories and the college receives all goods/services that require a lead-time of approximately six to eight weeks prior to June 30, 2022. Goods/services received by the college after June 30, 2022, cannot be charged to the FY 2021-2022 budget, as per the City of New York and CUNY’s procurement regulations. Additionally, once goods/services are received, it’s imperative that departments submit their Receiving Reports in a timely manner to facilitate payments to vendors. All invoices received must be forwarded to the Accounts Payable Office immediately for processing.

This is to ensure the Office of Procurement can begin year-end closing; the process of completing the financial activity for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, as mandated by the City of New York and CUNY. It is imperative all college departments adhere to this deadline so the Office of Procurement can complete the fiscal year year-end process effectively and efficiently.

If you have any questions, please contact the following individuals:

Procurement: Devon Hariprashad at Ext 7965 or e-mail [email protected].

Budget: Fanny Dumancela at Ext 4434 or email [email protected].

Accounts Payable: Bernard Sanders at Ext 6670 or email [email protected].

Thank you for your kind cooperation and attention to this important due date.
NEWS FROM THE DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Staff Highlight

Each week CEWD will highlight a staff member that began their trajectory as an Hostos student. We hope you share in our commitment to hiring our own and promoting them from within.

CEWD Staff Spotlight: Jacqueline Sotomayor, Office Manager
Jacqueline (Jackie) Sotomayor’s journey begins at age 12 when her parents moved their family from Puerto Rico to the Bronx with dreams of higher education and greater opportunity. After graduating from Dewitt Clinton High School, Jackie soon became a young wife and mother.

Lacking the skills and education needed to obtain gainful employment, Jackie enrolled at Hostos Community College and placed her young daughter in the Child Care Program. With two relatives having successfully graduated from Hostos, Jackie knew the college would give her the education needed to achieve her goals. In Spring 2004, two months before graduating with honors, Jackie was awarded an internship with Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). Her strong work ethic immediately resulted in her becoming a College Assistant and within six months she obtained a full-time position as a Payroll Coordinator. Jackie continues to advance in her career and currently holds the position of Office Manager within CEWD. To enhance her leadership skills and further her education, Jackie successfully completed The Center for Bronx Nonprofit Executive Management Certificate program in June 2020. She also enrolled at Lehman College and is expected to graduate in May 2022 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in Human Resources. Jackie’s goal is to continue to a master's degree at Lehman which would make her a three-time CUNY degree holder!

"Hostos Community College has helped me find something I am passionate about and provided me with the path to fulfill my full potential. Hostos has allowed me to obtain the skills and the necessary tools to make changes within my community and help others do the same.”
CEWD’s Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Program hosts Disability Service Roundtable

On March 23, 2022, Hostos Community College’s Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) program hosted the first Hostos WIPA Disability Service Roundtable: “How to Form a Network of Services for Our Community.”  The participants included: Disability Rights New York, Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) from The Bronx and Queens, Center for Independence of the Disabled, NY (CIDNY), and NYC Civic Engagement Commission. Alexis Lofaro, WIPA Co-director moderated the discussion on best practices for creating a network. Each agency shared their ideas on how to work together. Hostos’ WIPA program will lead the network’s information hub by collecting and sharing relevant information, events, and programs across the partner agencies. Hostos WIPA program will guide continued semi-annual discussions. The goal is to expand the network and plan the next Roundtable for September 2022.
