September 2018 Newsletter

Hello ELITEAM Friends,

We hope everyone is having a great Fall participating in sports, studying hard and getting ready for the ski season ahead.

In the spirit of ELITEAM, we always try to practice what we preach. We keep fitness as a top priority,  "JERF" (just eat real food), and always make an effort to keep a positive mindset and push our limits. In that vein, Doug signed up for a 100 mile trail running race, called "Run Rabbit Run" which took place earlier this month in Steamboat Springs, CO. This race required a tremendous amount of "digging deep". When all was said and done, Doug finished with a black eye, quad injury, blisters and black toes, but also a big smile! Below is a quick recap of his 27 hour "Run Rabbit Run" adventure.

Speaking of running and training, now is the time to include Ski Specific training in your workouts. This can be tough will your Fall sports in full swing, but anything you can add to your training over the next two months will pay off when the ski season finally gets under way. Below we give you some exercises that will help hit all the right elements for your pre ski season training.

Finally, if you have a U12/U14 racer in the family who is looking for extra training on the slopes this Winter, check out GMVS's new "R.I.S.E" program. This is a great opportunity for hard-working and enthusiastic young ski racers! More info below.

Best,

Pushing Through My Limits

After nine months of preparing, over 800 miles of training runs, 3000 Burpees during ELITEAM, and lots of planning, I toed the starting line at my first 100 mile running race. Coach Kelley had prepared me from nutrition and hydration plans to what to do when things got tough.

My number one mental preparation was to have real expectations - to fully acknowledge how tough it was going to be and that I would want to quit at some point. Second was to have a plan for when that happened. For me, it was focusing on three things; 1) the reason why I signed up for the race - to push my limits and have fun, 2) to always keep moving forward whether running, walking or crawling, and 3) to DIG DEEP. Yes, I used all of the ELITEAM themes as mantras throughout the 27 hours. Being #tougherstrongerfitterfaster got me through many hours of steep, dusty, rocky miles at night!

Physically it was the hardest thing I have ever put my body through. At times, I was sore, bruised, blistered, dirty, tired, delirious, sad, happy, lost and excited. Through it all I kept thinking about getting through the next mile. And then the next. Until I found myself running with Kelley and my brother and nephew into the finish. It was an amazing experience and I enjoyed (almost) every step!

PS: The black eye came at 1:00am when I tripped on a rock and cushioned my fall with my face! Just a shiner and some scrapes.

Fall Fitness
Two workouts each week!

Fall can be a very busy time for athletes. Many ELITEAMers are already participating in a variety of competitive sports, like soccer, lacrosse, football and field hockey. These are all great sports for cross-training and general fitness! However, we encourage all of our ski racing athletes to squeeze in two ski specific workouts each week. Just a quick 20-30 minute workout each time will pay off big time when you hit the slopes in December.

Now is the time to include anaerobic workouts along with exercises that hit power, strength and ski specific moves. Below are some options that you can include in your training this Fall.

1. Hill Work:
Sprints & Strength- Find a hill that takes about 10 seconds to sprint up. Do two of each of the following!
Hill Sprints                          One-Legged sideways jumps (each leg)
Tuck Jumps Up                  Backwards Tuck Walks

2. Burpees-
ELITEAMers LOVE Burpees. How about 5 sets of 10 to knock out 50!!! That's barely five minutes of sweat!

3. In Line Skating-
As we learned at ELITEAM, in-line skating is a great way to hone your skiing skills while also getting a workout. If you have skates, target some time each week to get out and practice. Set up a cone slalom - practice two footed jumps - sprint uphill - and see how long you can skate on one skate!
If you're interested in purchasing a pair of in-line skates, please contact us for a Coupon Code, courtesy of Rollerblade!

4. Box Jumps-
This side to side motion of Box Jumps is great practice for skiing. Keep your upper body calm, tighten your core, and bang out 20 at a time until you reach 100! Don't have a box? Just lay down your ski poles 6 inches apart and jump side to side.

Relive the challenge and fun of ELITEAM 2018

Thanks to all who joined us at ELITEAM this Summer. After taking some time to recover and reflect on our 2018 camps, it really was an amazing summer. The camps were the perfect combination of grit and good times! On the one side, we completed over 69,000 Burpees and pushed out limits physically, but we also had a wonderful time lifting each other to new highs, and all with smiles on our faces.

Want to relive it? We often do! You can revisit all of the photos and blogs from this Summer using the links below.
