As early childhood researchers and scholars, we are in a unique position to contribute solutions to close early opportunity gaps. This is especially critical for Black children and other children of color who have been systematically oppressed for generations, particularly in education. In this issue, Early Learning Network researchers share four important factors, each with a set of actions, to help eliminate or reduce opportunity gaps — especially for our students who have been placed at risk due to institutional inequities.

The Early Learning Network, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences , leverages its expertise, resources and geographic diversity to help close the achievement gap and maintain early learning success as children transition from preschool to third grade. Together, network researchers from universities and organizations across the U.S. are examining current policies and practices, identifying malleable factors associated with early learning and achievement and developing tools to assess early learning instruction, interactions and environments.
