EMCC Kicks Off Black History Month Feb. 1
Students, employees, community invited to a month-long celebration
AVONDALE, ARIZONA, January 31 – Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is excited to invite students, employees, and the community to its monthlong celebration of Black history beginning with the Black History and Achievement Month Kick-Off from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 1:

The theme for this year’s kick-off event is “Fighting the Good Fight: A Tribute to the Legacy of Ms. Linda Cutright.” A long-time EMCC employee, student champion, and West Valley community activist, Ms. Cutright, died on Dec. 1 from complications due to COVID-19.

“Linda was a leader not only at Estrella Mountain Community College but also in our vibrant and diverse West Valley community,” EMCC President Dr. Rey Rivera said.

The kick-off will feature panel guests Dr. Felicia Ganther, Bucks County Community College President; Dr. Rufus Glasper, League of Innovation President and CEO; and Dr. Larry Johnson Jr., Guttman Community College President.

Black History Month concludes with two live performances of Black Women Walking at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 and 25 in the Performing Arts Center on campus, 3000 N. Dysart Road, Avondale. The award-winning one-act play brings to life Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Marian Anderson, Wilma Rudolph, Bessie Coleman, Willie Mae Ford Smith, Fannie Lou Hamer, and others who changed the course of American history.
