April/May

Spring Has Sprung

April showers bring May flowers, and we're all glad to see green grass instead of snow! The simple pleasures of sunshine on your face take on a whole new meaning after a long, cold winter.

As you transition into spring, be aware of the advantages of having your veterinarian  administer the vaccines to your horse in our "Tip of the Month" column. Spring is also a time for cleaning, so this is a good time to review your insurance files and make sure you have the most up-to-date policy numbers and emergency claim numbers.

During an emergency, emotions can run high and clients often struggle to remember where they've stored their vital insurance information. Our feature article "Preparation and Planning For Emergencies" gives very good advice to follow to prepare for an emergency situation. One tip: Your cell phone is the perfect place to store this information because it's always with you!

As always, we would appreciate any comments you have!

If you have all of your emergency contacts and insurance numbers updated, you'll save valuable time in the event your horse becomes ill or injured.

 Preparation and Planning For Emergencies

It's Easter Sunday, and you and your family are spending the spring afternoon hiking at a local state park. As you traverse the challenging terrain, you pause for a water break and glance at your cell phone to see the "No Service" message.

No worries, you think. After all, you've chosen to spend the day out in nature and outside of civilization.

Your horse, however, doesn't know that it's a holiday and that you're out of touch, and, unfortunately, he chooses this time to show signs of colic. Thankfully, the barn manager at your boarding stable walks by and catches him biting at his flanks. She immediately takes action, his vitals signs and then gives you a call.

EMO Meet Our Client: The Jayne Family

Our Day Farm, founded by Alex and Linda Jayne more than 30 years ago in Elgin, Illinois, has grown and evolved into a family enterprise. All three of the Jayne children--Maggie, Charlie and Haylie--now work at the farm as professional riders and trainers.

Our Day Farm's program is deeply rooted in classic American style, focusing on a light forward seat, as well as fundamentals stemming from equitation. The knowledge Alex has accrued from the best horsemen of the past has now been passed down to this generation. This experience has allowed Our Day Farm to take horses and riders to the pinnacle of the sport.

Most recently, Charlie Jayne and Chill R Z, pictured above, won the Great American $1 million Grand Prix, held March 23 in Ocala, Florida. Our Day Farm is one of the only farms in the country that's currently sending horses to represent the United States in Nations Cups and international competitions while simultaneously winning at the top hunter shows in the country. Between Alex's 40 years of experience, Charlie's international record and Maggie and Haylie's training record, Our Day has created a program that's in a league of its own.

Alex, Maggie, Charlie and Haylie all contribute to the progress of the riders at Our Day Farm, and they each contribute their own strengths as horsemen to the improvement of horse and rider, which makes for a unique training atmosphere. In addition, Haylie's husband, Nate Rolfe, is an EMO Agency Field Agent.

Our Day Farm, which also has a winter base in Wellington, Florida, has been home to countless national champions in all three disciplines of hunters, jumpers and equitation. Their winning record includes titles at such shows as the Pennsylvania National, Washington (D.C.) International, National, Devon, Winter Equestrian Festival, Global Champions Tour and the Super League, to name a few.

5 Reasons Your Veterinarian

 Should Administer Vaccines

Sure, you may have given your horse injections over the years, perhaps administering daily antibiotics under the guidance of your veterinarian, so why not save a few bucks and give your horse his spring vaccinations?

Well, you might be surprised to learn that purchasing vaccines and injecting them yourself has distinct disadvantages, some safety-related and others monetary.

Here are five reasons you should have your veterinarian administer vaccinations:

1.  Ideal Vaccination Schedule
Your veterinarian will know which vaccines are necessary for your horse's health and well being, depending on many factors, including his age, activity level and frequency of travel. Through treating many horses in your area, he'll know which diseases are more prevalent than others and will be able to advise you on the vaccine regimen that will best safeguard your horse.

2. Experience

Your veterinarian has most likely given 1,000s of injections and is experienced in proper handling, dosage and giving the vaccine in the correct location.

3. Adverse Reactions

Vaccines are designed to stimulate an immune response, and while adverse reactions are rare, in the event your horse has a reaction your veterinarian will be on-hand to provide the care and support your horse requires.

4. Warranty Violation

Most vaccine manufacturers guarantee their products and will provide medical coverage if your horse becomes infected with the disease. They will often pay for diagnosis, treatment and hospitalization, if necessary. Administering vaccines yourself may violate this guarantee because they are labeled for use by veterinarians. If your horse is enrolled in one of the many protection policies, such as SmartPak's ColiCare, you must meet the annual wellness requirements, which require annual vaccines to be administered by a veterinarian.

5.  Health Certificate
If you require a health certificate for your horse to travel to compete, your veterinarian may not provide one if he has no record of your horse's vaccination schedule.
