November 2021 Newsletter

A Message from Principal Thompson

Sue Thompson.JPG

Hello, Oak Creek East Middle School Families,

This week we closed out the first quarter in which we all experienced the joy of being back at school all together and the challenges of being at school while we continue to deal with COVID.

We are all learning and leaning on one another as we continue to navigate supporting student’s social emotional needs and continue to challenge students academically. Please know the staff and administration at EMS truly appreciate your support, kindness, and understanding as we all work together to support student learning and their social emotional well-being.

We continue to work as a school with our students in helping them build strong academic routines and habits of being respectful, safe, engaged, and responsible. We want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for working collaboratively with our teachers and staff members during our fall Parent Teacher Conferences and keeping up-to-date through our weekly House communications. We value the support we receive from you, our parents/guardians, so please don't hesitate to contact us, your student's teacher, or counselor, to continue to work together to make this a successful school year.

Our students and staff will recognize Veterans Day during their advisory class on November 11, in which they will learn about the meaning of Veterans Day and reflect on ways to honor and show gratitude to our veterans. This school-wide activity will be led by our 8th grade student council members.

As we enter the holiday season, it is a perfect time to reflect and be thankful for all our gifts. We, the Oak Creek East Middle School administration and staff, would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the parents/guardians, students, and all those who help make our school an engaging, challenging and inspiring place to learn for all of our students. Thank you for the gift of time with your children and the opportunity to educate them.

Sincerely,

Sue Thompson, Principal

Masks Required Reminder.png

This is a reminder for students who take the bus to and from school. Remember, masks are mandated on the school bus and MUST be worn. Please be prepared and have your mask out before arriving to the bus at dismissal. You may not get on your bus without a mask. It is also expected that you wear your mask the entire time you are on the bus. This includes to and from school and any athletic or extracurricular event. This is required by a January 2021 federal order issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services. Thank you!

2021-2022 Middle School Wrestling

Wrestling Practice Resumed.png

Middle school wrestling is a chance for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to participate in the world's oldest sport. Everyone is welcome. Athletes compete against wrestlers who are the same weight and have the same experience level. That means everyone from from kids with 5 years experience to those who've never seen a wrestling mat can be competitive and have a good time.

Practice will start Wednesday, November 3 at East Middle School.

Practice is from 4:00-5:45 Mon-Thur. The season lasts until January, 15.

Wrestlers should have workout clothes and running shoes. Wrestling shoes help, but are not required to start the year.

Anyone with questions should contact Coach Hein at s.hein@ocfsd.org.

Social-Emotional Learning Lessons

Dear Families,

Over the next several weeks your child will be focusing on bullying and harassment as part of the Second Step Middle School program. Bullying is at its peak in middle school, and research indicates that taking proactive steps to address bullying and harassment will help reduce occurrences of it in our school and will benefit students in high school and beyond.

Students will learn how to recognize the social and environmental factors that can enable bullying and harassment, how to safely challenge these factors, and how to seek help if they or someone they know is being bullied or harassed.

We encourage students to report any instances of bullying, harassment they witness or experience to you and to trusted adults at our school. They can also use the Speak Up Speak Out App to report things anonymously.

Thank you for your support as we work together to build a bully and harassment free community.

Artist: Isabela Garcia

Grade: 7

7th Grade artist Isabela Garcia merged together her love for photography and a touch of Pop Art inspiration for one of her art final pieces. Isa’s attention to detail and willingness to try new things in her art practice is truly admirable. Amazing work, Isa! Thank you for a wonderful start to the year.
