Why did you become a FAN? “I have always had a passion for medically fragile children. Early in my professional career, I was a pediatric radiation therapist in Chicago. When I became a father, my youngest was diagnosed with triplegic cerebral palsy. Because of the many medical issues he has had to face, we have become somewhat experts navigating emergency care for children.”

What is the most important thing for emergency practitioners to know about caring for children in emergencies? “Remember that our children are as diverse as non-medically fragile children. Each child is different and has different needs and triggers. It is important to talk TO our children and not AT them when caring for them in an emergency setting..."  Read more.

EMSC Out and About

Last month, Health Resources and Services Administration EMSC Branch staff and grantees participated in a site visit with the EMSC State Partnership Program team in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). They were joined by CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios. This was the EMSC Program's first site visit since before the pandemic.   • Nancy McGrath, MN, MSN, RN, CPNP, a subject matter expert with the EMSC Innovation & Improvement Center and pioneer in pediatric readiness work, was announced as the recipient of the Emergency Nursing Association’s Pediatric Readiness Improvement Award.
  • Manish Shah, MD, MS, co-principal investigator of PECARN’s CHaMP node, received the Marianne Gausche-Hill Educational Mentorship Award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.
  • E. Brooke Lerner, PhD, FAEMS, co-principal investigator of PECARN’s CHaMP node, received the Nate Kuppermann PEM Mentorship in Research Award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.
