Thousands of Dollars in Cash and Prizes Awarded in the 4th Annual Jeffco Writing Challenge
and I Love to Read Book Contests

Fourth grade winners are all smiles at the JWC Award Ceremony

Over 1,100 Jefferson county students participated in the 2017 Jeffco Writing Challenge, submitting short fiction and poetry describing how books can change the world.  The contest is sponsored by Education Nonprofit Corporation in collaboration with Jefferson county educators.

"This year's entries were so inspiring!" said Jody Thomas, one of the judges.  "The kids really ran with the idea of books changing the world."

Last year's winners' parents report how participation in the Jeffco Writing Challenge inspires their kids to work hard at writing well. Daniela Ciobanu, mother of last year's 8th grade 3rd place winner Theodora, told ENC that the contest "makes kids care about the quality of their writing," and many parents echoed the sentiments of Sina Hirsch, whose daughter Gwyneth was "over the moon" at receiving 1st place for 4th grade in 2016.

The awards recognize serious work on the part of the students.  Anna Bender, one of this year's winners for second grade, reported staying up late on the due date: "I felt like my hand was going to fall off!" Ninth grader Ava Knoshaug  was reflective about what she learned writing about To Kill a Mockingbird: "I am very honored to have won this  contest and it has inspired me to continue writing so that the morals and lessons  that I see in the world can be translated into the lives of others ."  Talia Knoshaug, a winner in the I Love to Read contest, appreciates the deeper appreciation she gains from writing about her reading: "when you write about reading your brain dives deeper in what you really think."

Eighth Grade

Ninth Grade

Entries were judged by a panel of elementary to post-secondary educators.  First place winners in both contests received $100.  Second place, third place and Honorable Mention awards were gift cards for Tattered Cover and  Barnes and Noble Book Stores.

The Jeffco Writing Challenge awards ceremony on May 10 featured local author Laura Padgtt as keynote speaker and Charlee Burnor of Alice 105.9 as MC.

Is your business interested in supporting education?

Local businesses tell us they get a great response from the community when they support ENC.  Debbie Sloan from A Touch For Wellness in Arvada says that their donations "give us exposure to new potential clients - people we wouldn't have access to."  Both Sloan and Collette Wagner from Destination Dance feel good about the work their donations support.  Wagner says, " We at Destination Dance enjoy supporting the Jeffco Writing Challenge and I Love to Read programs.  They are wonderful programs which give great opportunities to children in our community!  We have donated both dance and fitness class certificates the last several years and are looking forward to continuing to support Public Education and the Jeffco Schools."

Businesses who donate are promoted through our flyers and presence at community events for raffle sales.  We'd love to help you demonstrate your commitment to education to our community!

Be Involved to Help Your Child Succeed at School

The National Education Association's Tips for Parents

playful-family-portrait.jpg

Parents, families, educators and communities-there's no better partnership to assure that all students, pre-K to high school, have the support and resources they need to succeed in school and life.

The research shows that students tend to earn higher grades, have better attendance, are more motivated and less likely to drop out when their families are involved in their education.

Here are four tips for what parents can do outside the classroom to help their child succeed:
  1. Create a home environment that encourages learning and schoolwork. Establish a daily routine of mealtimes with time for homework, chores and bedtime.
  2. Reinforce learning at home and show your child the skills they're learning are applicable to everyday life. For example, if your child is learning about measurements, solicit help with a recipe.
  3. Model the habits of a lifelong learner. Let your child see you reading, writing and using technology.
  4. Become an advocate. Sign up to speak to the school board about resources your child's school and schools in general need to be successful.
