Dr. David Emmett Gardner | May 4, 1928 - February 8, 2020
David Gardner
David Gardner will forever be remembered at Hart House Theatre as one of the essential voices in the revitalization of our stage in the early 2000s. David was an actor, director, and historian who got his start on our stage where he played roles such as Othello, Macbeth, Marc Anthony, and Constantin.

He then turned to professional work and played on stages such as the Royal Alexandra Theatre, the Crest Theatre, and Jupiter Theatre in Toronto, the Canadian Repertory Theatre in Ottawa, and Brae Manor Playhouse in Quebec. He also toured North America with the Canadian Players. David performed for three seasons at the Stratford Festival, winning the Tyrone Guthrie award in 1956.

David's immense contributions to the performing arts in Canada includes founding of the National Theatre School of Canada, directing and producing 75 dramas for CBC Television, serving as Artistic Director of the Vancouver Playhouse and lecturing, teaching and mentoring at numerous academic institutions.

A celebration of David's extraordinary life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020 in the Great Hall at Hart House from 1-5 pm. Dr. Gardner established a permanent annual endowment fund in 2014 that gives University of Toronto students the opportunity to acquire real-life, highly-technical experience in directing at Hart House Theatre. To read more about David's wonderful life and his gift to our Theatre, visit here >>
Oh, What a Lovely War! Opening Soon
We peeked into rehearsals to share a snippet of what the cast and creative team behind Oh, What a Lovely War! have been working on. Traditionally staged as a satire with songs that question humanity’s glorification of battle and the cycle of violence, director Autumn Smith has decided to focus it on our present day video game culture.

This modern staging will take this classic, WWI themed play and place it firmly in 2020, within the world of gamers and mega-violent video games, to force a look at how we pass along warlike thinking to the next generation. This show is presented in association with Hart House’s 100th Anniversary and salutes the House’s historic connection to the military efforts in the Great War. Get your tickets here >>
