Airline Pilot Technical Interviews

By Ronald D. McElroy

The 4th edition of Airline Pilot Technical Interviews by Ron McElroy is your go-to resource for mastering the technical portion of the hiring process. Packed with exercises in mental math, approach plates, regulations, weather, systems, and cockpit scenarios, this guide helps aspiring pilots sharpen both their aeronautical knowledge and inflight decision-making.

McElroy’s proven methods also prepare candidates for simulator evaluations and oral interviews, while introducing key insights into the 14 CFR Part 111 Pilot Records Database. Whether you're just starting out or refining your skills, this book is a must-have for professional pilot candidates.

Dealer of the Month: August

Take a look at our Store Locator and Online Retailer pages to see where ASA products can be found all over the globe. Our August Dealer of the Month is Marv Golden Pilot Supplies.

About Marv Golden Pilot Supplies in their words:

Marv Golden Pilot Supplies® is the original online pilot destination for pilot supplies and the choice for professional and private pilots for more than 40 years. Marv Golden pioneered mail-order aviation discounting in the pages of Trade-A-Plane in 1982 40 years ago! Prior to that, if you wanted aviation headsets, portable transceivers and other equipment you had to go to your local FBO and pay full retail!

Marv met with immediate success! The business quickly grew and we established a retail store at Montgomery Field in San Diego in 1989. As the business grew Marv (who is a U.S. Army veteran) felt strongly that staff for our store should include pilots and preferably retired veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Today, we are proud to employ pilots, CFIs and other aviation experts, including veterans from the U.S. Navy and Air Force. Marv has always felt that our unique advantage in aviation and pilot supplies is our dedication to customer service and providing value to our customers, especially since his name is on the door (and the website)!

Our experienced staff of pilots and certified flight instructors are skilled at choosing only the best aviation equipment for our well-stocked pilot store. We stand behind our products and our service, which is why we provide a 30-day money-back guarantee on all our pilot supplies. If you want only the best, Marv Golden Pilot Supplies is the pilot supply store for you.

Originally launched in 2008, the Learn to Fly Blog is for student pilots and those considering flight training. This is a great resource to acquire the aeronautical knowledge needed to be successful during and after training. Certificated pilots and flight instructors will find this a platform full of insights into the aviation environment, in addition to providing encouragement and guidance to newer members of the aviation community.

Becoming a Pilot: When to Start

Becoming a pilot is a serious endeavor. Some people dream about it their whole lives, others start their journey very young. When is the “right” time to start? According to Jason Blair, who worked as an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, now is the perfect time. He lays out his reasons …

EAA AirVenture 2025

OSHKOSH, WI— July 21-27

This year's EAA AirVenture was record-breaking with a whopping 704,000 visitors, over 10,000 aircraft flying in, and more than 16,000 aircraft operations recorded—averaging 108 takeoffs/landings per hour!

ASA was set up at our usual spot in Hangar B, where we had a 40-foot booth packed with our publications, training tools, and pilot supplies. Outdoors, we had a 20-foot trailer manned by our partners from NIFA and the U.S. Air Force Academy.

We greatly enjoyed connecting with our customers, pilots, aviation enthusiasts, instructors, students, and partners.

‘Til next year!

InFO 24007 Revision

In early July, a revision was made to InFO 24007 regarding safety management system (SMS) requirements for certain repair stations. The document states that, "The new Special Condition requires EASA Part 145 certificated repair stations located in the U.S. to establish, implement, and maintain an SMS that, at a minimum, meets the requirements of 14 CFR Part 5." It goes on further to state that the system must be developed, implemented, and integrated into the repair station’s manuals, EASA supplement, and operations no later than December 31, 2025.

Are you thinking about introducing a safety management system to your operation? It’s easy to be intimidated by the scope and complexity of SMS, but the second edition of Practical Safety Management Systems distills the concepts and principles into a practical working format. Repair stations will find this title to be a vital resource for creating, implementing, and maintaining a functioning SMS.
