Human Factors: Enhancing Pilot Performance
Second Edition
Aviation’s impressive safety record is built on lessons learned from past mistakes. Yet accidents like controlled flight into terrain, loss of control, runway incursions, and midair collisions still happen—often due to human error.
This book dives into the physiological and psychological limits that affect pilots and explains why errors occur. Backed by scientific research and accident studies, it offers practical strategies to reduce risks and improve decision-making in the cockpit.
Whether you’re a private pilot or a seasoned airline pilot, Human Factors provides you with tools to recognize, avoid, and mitigate mistakes before they happen.

A compass works because its needle is a small magnet that aligns with Earth’s magnetic field. When another magnet is brought nearby, it creates its own magnetic field, which can pull the needle away from true north. This interference, known as “deviation” causes the compass to give incorrect readings. To maintain accuracy, pilots and sailors keep magnets and metal objects away from compasses.
For more information on magnetic compass behavior around magnets, see the Dictionary of Aeronautical Terms and the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge.

Last month we asked what the most challenging flight skill was to learn during instrument flight rules (IFR) training. You answered "managing workload and multitasking" most with 23% of votes. With even votes, were "holding pattern entries," "maintaining situational awareness without visual cues," "reading and interpreting IFR charts," and "not yet started IFR training" tied for second. And lastly, with 10% of votes was "flying instrument approaches."
The following poll is for anyone who wants to participate. Your participation in the poll is voluntary. Your identity will not be made public and is used solely for the purpose of understanding ENROUTE reader preferences, so that we can continue to provide you with the products, services, and information most useful to your training journey.
