Navigating Weather
A Pilot's Guide to Airborne and Datalink Weather Radar
| | |
Weather radar information is one of the most valuable tools available to pilots to ensure safe, efficient, and comfortable flight operations. Author David Ison takes you through the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to operate both airborne and datalink weather radar. With a focus on simplicity and real-world application, Dr. Ison introduces and explains the essential concepts of radar operation and interpretation. Beginning with radar and severe weather theory, he covers the attributes of inclement weather phenomena, how they are detected, and how pilots can evaluate these conditions through available radar sources. Airborne weather radar essentials such as attenuation, tilt management, contouring, and gain are explained with real-world examples. The text outlines advanced features including auto-tilt, turbulence detection, wind shear warning systems, and terrain mapping, providing operational strategies for all phases of flight.
Each chapter presents case examples, concept questions to test your understanding, and scenarios to assess your judgment and evaluation skills. Regardless of your current skill level—whether you are just considering adding datalink radar to your toolkit or have been flying with airborne radar for years—this book can serve as a fundamental reference on using radar data in flight.

About Hammond Aviation in their words:
Hammond Aviation Ltd. was founded in 1995 and is 100% family-owned and operated by the Hammond family. However, the family legacy in aviation goes back much further than that! Telford "Chum" Hammond flew Tiger Moths, Harvards, PBY Canso Flying Boats, Hurricanes, and Swordfish Torpedo Bombers in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the British Royal Navy during World War II. Chum owned several businesses and passed his love of flying on to his sons and grandsons. Hammond Aviation was started in the basement of their farmhouse in St. Mary’s, Ontario, in 1995 to serve the local aviation community. They quickly outgrew that location and moved to their FBO and aircraft maintenance facility at the Waterloo International Airport in Breslau, Ontario. The Hammonds have owned a Cessna Cardinal, Piper Aztec, Cessna Skymaster, and a Vampire jet. They currently own a Cessna 150 and two Cessna 172s used for banner towing, charters, and rentals, plus a vintage T-33 jet trainer that is operated under Waterloo Warbirds.

Spatial disorientation (SD) remains one of aviation’s most persistent human factors and, according to the FAA, plays a role in approximately 80% of aviation accidents. If you’re early in your flight training, icing might feel like a “future problem” reserved for instrument pilots and turbine aircraft.
