The Complete Private Pilot

Fourteenth Edition, by Bob Gardner

Using the FAA exam as the foundation for learning, author Bob Gardner applies practical information, preparing readers not only for the test, but also for taking flight. He augments the required aeronautical knowledge with specific tips and techniques, checklists and mnemonic devices, and sound advice from personal experience. A provided full-color example of a sectional chart supports the many interactive exercises throughout the text. Each chapter concludes with review questions that simulate those found on the FAA test. A comprehensive glossary and index are included to simplify study.

Student Sectional

Aeronautical Chart Study Tool

This sectional chart excerpt allows students to practice ground training and flight planning. An excerpt of the Seattle Sectional, the fold-out chart depicts all classes of airspace and the topographical symbols and all sectional legends used on a sectional aviation flight planning chart. The chart is printed to scale and can be used with conventional aviation plotters. While not for use in navigation, this less expensive chart alternative provides all the information pilots in training need to learn airspace, flight planning, and route selection.

Information for Operators: InFO 24014

In April 2024, the FAA published an update to 14 CFR Part 5 Safety Management Systems (SMS), expanding the regulatory requirements for some operators. In early December of 2024 the FAA released InFO 24104, which encourages all general aviation (GA) organizations to develop and implement a voluntary SMS that meets Part 5 requirements.

While it is not required (yet) for all types of operators, it's still a good idea to have an SMS in place. If you are thinking of building out an SMS for your organization, Paul Snyder and Gary Ulrich have some help for you in Practical Safety Management Systems.

by LeRoy Cook

Earning the Private Pilot license is a great achievement—now, expand your initial schooling to go beyond flight training. The real excitement begins when the flight instructor lets go of your hand, and you’re left to set your own goals and create your own motivations.

Veteran pilot and instructor LeRoy Cook shows you what lies beyond flight school. In these pages, he’ll guide you into areas of aviation your instructors might not have mentioned. Things like planning your first cross-country flying vacation…or sharpening your weather forecasting skills…or pursuing advanced endorsements and ratings.

Just for Fun

Last month, we asked "If you could simply "add wings to it" what would you add wings to first?" Here are the results: my car - 29%, my back - 21.7%, my shoes - 13%, my motorcycle - 10.9%, my boat - 8.7%, my bicycle - 8.7%, my snowmobile - 4.3%, my skateboard - 4.3%, my golf cart - 2.2%, and something else 2.2%. So many possibilities!
