An Aviator's Field Guide to the Seaplane Rating
By William O. Young
| | |
In this practical guide for aspiring seaplane pilots, author Bill Young details what students need to know to earn their Airplane Single-Engine Sea (ASES) Rating. The book is designed for pilots to use before and during training and provides a curriculum of flight and ground lessons, oral exam preparation questions and answers, and a focus on safety through scenario-based training and the use of checklists.
The content is aligned with the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) to ensure all requirements are met, with references to the specific ACS tasks addressed to guide further study. The author uses an example seaplane to illustrate concepts while providing spaces throughout for students to record details specific to their training aircraft.
| | | ASA Product Video: Choosing the Right FAR/AIM | | |
Owning a current FAR/AIM is critical for all pilots and aviation professionals. But what should you look for when shopping for one? How can you make sure that your FAR/AIM is complete, current, and not written by artificial intelligence?
Here is what to look for:
- Page count: the FAR/AIM should be over 1,000 pages
- Publication date: the FAR/AIM should be published within the last 12 months
- Ongoing updates: the FAR/AIM should include free access to updates to support the current printed edition
- Extras: look for extras such as study lists, FAA forms, quick reference tabs, indexes, and page headers
- Reputation: written and curated only by humans, and trusted for more than 80 years by aviation professionals

| | | Dealer of the Month: June | | ASA at NIFA SAFECON 2025: A Month of Excitement and Achievement | | |
May brought another exciting adventure for ASA as we traveled to the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) SAFECON Championship!
This year’s SAFECON was filled with high-octane weather—tornado warnings, hail, and winds—but that didn’t stop the incredible competition and close finishes.
| | |
Congratulations to Embry‑Riddle’s Golden Eagles Flight on claiming their 16th National Championship at NIFA SAFECON 2025! Hats off to the University of North Dakota for securing second place, and to Southern Illinois University for rounding out the podium in third.
A special shoutout to Kaden Robinson from the University of North Dakota for taking first place in the ASA-sponsored Computer Accuracy Event—an impressive achievement!
And of course, no SAFECON would be complete without the ASA Friday Night BBQ and raffle, capped off by the ever-popular coaches’ putt-off. Congratulations to Coach Nick, who sank three 10-foot putts to win a $600 ASA gift card for the Western Michigan University flight team!
See you next year!

Last month we asked which "pilot thing" you have done outside the cockpit. Matching our predictions, in first place with 20.6% of votes was "many of these, and proud of it!" Next in line with 14.7% of votes was "did a preflight walkaround of your car," then tied for third place was "referred to your significant other as your copilot" and "used the phonetic alphabet while ordering a coffee." In fourth place was "assigned seats in your car by weight and balance," "used roger, standby, and niner when speaking," and "continuously refer to all time in zulu." Then in last place, a couple of you admitted to briefing passengers before pulling out of the driveway. How fun!
The following poll is for anyone who wants to participate. Your participation in the poll is voluntary. Your identity will not be made public and is used solely for the purpose of understanding ENROUTE reader preferences, so that we can continue to provide you with the products, services, and information most useful to your training journey.
