| | | Retirement Announcement Letter from Jackie Spanitz | | |
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
After an incredible 32-plus years with Aviation Supplies & Academics (ASA) I am announcing my retirement, effective December 31, 2025. It has been a privilege to serve as ASA General Manager, Curriculum Director, and in Marketing & Technical Support over the years.
When I began this career in 1993, email and voicemail weren’t yet the norm. Teaching happened in a classroom and FAA Knowledge Exams were taken at the local airport with a #2 pencil. There was no such thing as an “app” and educational software was in aviation's distant future. Sectional charts were paper, weather briefings and flight plans required a call at both ends of the flight, which often meant walking until you found a phone booth. Book production required a lot of paper, scissors, glue, and couriers. We had a short list of authors and subject matter experts. Research and development required multiple trips to libraries. Customer support was provided by phone calls and writing letters. Marketing was printed and snail-mailed, the concept of a website or commerce—not even on the radar. Sales orders required a fax machine, phone, or a stamped envelope and resulted in about 12 pieces of paper that went through four different offices before being filed away. There was no such thing as crew resource management, scenario-based training, general aviation simulators, hybrid or remote work procedures, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), let alone artificial or emotional intelligence. I’m amazed at how much publishing, pilot supply manufacturing, business, aviation education, and technology have evolved in what feels like the blink of an eye.
I am immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together in aviation safety. ASA has kept up with the continuous changes as a result of the hard work of our staff. Under our collective efforts, ASA has introduced new authors, subject matter experts, and products; educational materials have been updated for today’s airspace, weather services, regulations, equipment, and procedures; the airman certification system has been updated so training and testing can be correlated; we’ve introduced more people to this wonderful industry with increased workforce outreach, new aircraft and flight deck technology, drones, advanced air mobility (AAM), commercial space, and more. These accomplishments reflect the dedication, innovation, and teamwork that defines ASA.
As I reflect on my career, I am filled with gratitude for the support from many. I’ve been fortunate to build lasting friendships along the way. Most importantly, I am deeply proud of ASA’s collaboration with the aviation community and our governing agency, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The significance of this cannot be overstated, as we’ve worked together to support the airman certification system that results in safer skies. “Committee” can be a dirty word, but participating on the Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee (ARAC) Airman Certification Standards Workgroup (ACS WG) has been a highlight of my career and an amazing experience to be a part of.
At the end of this year, I will leave you in extremely capable hands and am excited for Jen Storm to become ASA’s next General Manager, as ASA flies through our 85-year anniversary. Working closely with Jen during her onboarding process has given me even more confidence that her relevant experience, along with the breadth and depth of her skills, is the perfect fit for this position. Jen and I will continue our shared work to support a smooth transition.
I’m excited to support my community, spend time with family and friends, and explore the world from hiking boots, ski boots, campsites, and trails. Thank you for an extraordinary journey. I wish you blue skies, tailwinds, and continued success. I look forward to watching ASA thrive in the years ahead.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Jackie Spanitz, General Manager (Retiring 12/31/2025)
P.S. You can continue to reach me at jackie@asa2fly.com for the remainder of this year. In 2026 I will transition into an advisory role to support ASA’s executive team. You can reach ASA’s new general manager at jenstorm@asa2fly.com.

How to Verify Authentic Aviation Information
ASA books are available through reputable retailers, online dealers, and FBO's worldwide—but imposters do exist, here are some things to check to make sure you're getting a genuine ASA product:
- Look for the ASA logo and color bar on the top of the book cover
- Confirm the ISBN is the same as the one on asa2fly.com's website
- Check the number of pages. The FAR/AIM for example should contain hundreds of pages of unaltered, non-AI-generated FAA regulations, including citations. You can compare the page count on asa2fly.com
- Use the "look inside" feature on online stores to preview pages and verify that the content is legible and meets your expectations.

An Aviator's Field Guide to Middle-Altitude Flying
By Jason Blair
| | |
In An Aviator’s Field Guide to Middle-Altitude Flying, author Jason Blair shares his experience in a variety of piston, twin-engine aircraft commonly used to fly at altitudes between 10,000 and 25,000 feet MSL. This book covers the major phases of flight and the specific considerations for pilots who operate aircraft at these altitudes, including performance and fuel planning, emergencies, descent planning, navigation, weather, aircraft modifications, oxygen use, weight and balance, pilot qualifications, and insurance.
With insight gained through his many years instructing and giving checkrides that is not found in other training manuals or typical flight training operations, Blair’s book will help the pilot owner or operator evaluate the risks and challenges unique to middle-altitude flying, develop effective flight-planning practices, and take advantage of the increased efficiencies and opportunities offered through these higher operations.
| | Dealer of the Month: September | | |
About Pilot Mall in their words:
We are incredibly proud to be recognized by ASA as their Dealer of the Month for September! For us, this honor is a reflection of the mission we embarked on over 20 years ago: to serve the aviation community with dedication and passion.
Our story began in the late 90s, a time when pilots still relied on bulky catalogs. We saw the future of aviation retail taking shape online and launched PilotMall.com, becoming one of the very first to offer a reliable digital superstore for pilots. From a small 600 sq ft office at Stewart Airport (KSWF) in New York, our journey has taken us to the sunny skies of Florida and finally to our current home, a spacious showroom and warehouse in Cartersville, Georgia.
Being a "family in flight" is at the heart of everything we do. We understand the thrill of a first solo and the satisfaction of a perfectly executed flight plan because aviation is in our blood. That's why we're committed to being your one-stop shop, offering everything from essential training materials and pilot supplies to the largest selection of aviation-themed gifts you'll find anywhere.
With over 8,000 items in stock, unbeatable prices, and world-class customer service, our goal is to provide the quality and value you deserve. Whether you’re a student pilot or a seasoned aviator, we're here to ensure you have exactly what you need for your next adventure.
Thank you for making us a part of your journey. We look forward to continuing to serve you.
Your Family in Flight,
The PilotMall.com Team
| | Originally launched in 2008, the Learn to Fly Blog is for student pilots and those considering flight training. This is a great resource to acquire the aeronautical knowledge needed to be successful during and after training. Certificated pilots and flight instructors will find this a platform full of insights into the aviation environment, in addition to providing encouragement and guidance to newer members of the aviation community. | | |
To date, uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) have faced strict limits when flying beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) of the operator. Previously, BVLOS actions required individualized exemptions and waivers to existing regulations. In other words, anyone wanting to put UAS to work had to get special permission every time…

Last month we asked how you feel about artificial intelligence in aviation education. Surprisingly, votes were split evenly in four directions — "Love it! AI is my new copilot," "It's cool, I guess, but I still need a human in the cockpit," "No thanks, keep the robots out of my checklist," and "Neutral, haven't seen enough to judge." Slightly behind with the least amount of votes was "Cautiously skeptical, feels like it's skipping steps or taking shortcuts."
The following poll is for anyone who wants to participate. Your participation in the poll is voluntary. Your identity will not be made public and is used solely for the purpose of understanding ENROUTE reader preferences, so that we can continue to provide you with the products, services, and information most useful to your training journey.
