Our Biggest Showdown Yet

This year’s Showdown was our biggest event yet. More than 200 spectators packed our campus to watch 50 boxers from across Northern California compete in an action-filled day of amateur boxing.

Guests enjoyed food, music, local vendors, and support from major corporate sponsors, including PG&E, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Thrivent Financial. Boxing fans gathered for coffee and pastries in our outdoor cafe lounge, while special guests received VIP treatment in the Thrivent Financial Champions Lounge.

The main action took place in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Arena. The venue reached standing-room-only capacity as boxers pursued major personal milestones. Some earned their first win, while experienced competitors celebrated their 20th victory. From the opening bell to the final bout, the energy never slowed.

A special thank you goes to our staff. They put in countless hours planning, preparing, and working behind the scenes to make the Showdown a success. Their teamwork, commitment, and hard work brought every part of the event together. Congratulations to the entire team on producing our biggest event yet.

We thank the boxing clubs that helped make this event a success, including Lion’s Den Boxing, King’s Boxing Gym, Lightning Boxing Gym, Guerrero Boxing Gym, the Police Athletic League, and many others. We also thank our sponsors, vendors, volunteers, coaches, boxers, families, and spectators for supporting this growing event.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for an even bigger Showdown next year.

FutureWorks: A Summer Of Growth & Opportunity

FutureWorks was action packed this summer with more than 80 young people gaining real work experience through paid internships.

These jobs gave young people the chance to earn income, build practical skills, and strengthen their resumes. 

Thank you to all our workforce partners, Coro, EOYDC, Lao Family Community Development, Unity Council and YEP, who connected youth with opportunities at EOBA. Participants worked as gardeners, administrative assistants, gym assistants, summer camp counselors, and facilities and operations workers.

Democracy Training Camp Celebrates 25 Community Leaders

EOBA's Democracy Training Camp is a ten-week civic leadership and community storytelling program that helps East Oakland residents understand how local government works while building relationships, developing leadership skills, and finding new ways to make their voices heard. Through interactive workshops, storytelling circles, guest speakers, and creative projects, participants learn that civic engagement begins with community.

This year's program exceeded every expectation.



Twenty-five participants graduated from the Democracy Training Camp and were recognized during a heartfelt certificate ceremony and reception in EOBA's community garden. Family members, partners, and supporters gathered to celebrate a group of residents who completed the program with new knowledge, stronger connections, and a renewed commitment to serving their neighborhoods.

The success of the program was made possible through the support of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Oakland Freedom Project, and the League of Women Voters, whose partnership enriched each session with civic education, community leadership, and meaningful dialogue.



Along the way, participants built friendships across generations and cultures, shared their personal stories, and discovered that they have more in common than they realized. What started as a civic education program became a community where neighbors learned from one another and left inspired to continue working together to strengthen East Oakland.'
