Washington Brownfield Workshops Recap

The week of September 9th, CCLR and the Washington Department of Ecology held three brownfield workshops in Richland, North Bend and Bremerton Washington. CCLR consultants Joelle Greenland and Antonia Bassett supported the workshops, which were designed to assist cities with populations below 75,000 with brownfield reuse.

The packed workshops were followed by local walking tours of brownfield success stories, one of which included a beautiful ferry ride from the Port of Bremerton to the City of Port Orchard. Not only did these workshops share insightful brownfield information, they were an amazing opportunity to create connections to further local redevelopment projects! Thank you to the speakers, mayors of Bremerton and North Bend for their appearances, and to everyone who attended a Washington workshop!

Help CCLR and WRT Develop Park Funding Framework Guide

Building parks is a vital investment in our collective well-being, but 100 million people in the USA, including 28 million children, don’t have a park within a 10-minute walk from home. To help address this disparity, CCLR and WRT have partnered to create a funding resource aimed at helping resource-limited and overburdened communities build capacity, gain knowledge, and eventually develop parks. As a key player in the redevelopment field, your input on this survey will be instrumental in shaping a more relevant and supportive resource. We thank you for your support.

How to Identify a Brownfield

Watch this video to learn 12 identifiers of brownfields and the importance of conducting an All Appropriate Inquiry (a Phase I environmental site assessment) AAI before you buy the property. CCLR can help you ensure you follow State and EPA regulations for pre- purchase due diligence and through every step of the brownfield reuse process! Set up a meeting with CCLR to get started.

Equitable Communities Revitalization Grant Groundbreaking Successes!

Round 1 grantees for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control’s ECRG grant are improving equity in communities through the beneficial reuse of brownfield projects. This summer, three grantees held groundbreaking celebrations:

Resources for Community Development (RCD) broke ground on Longfellow Corner in Oakland. Longfellow Corner will provide 77 affordable apartments for low-income households in a new, mixed-use, transit-oriented development. RCD received a Cleanup grant for $422,763 that was used to conduct site investigations, progress through regulatory oversight approvals, and prepare the site for redevelopment.

Community Housing Development Corporation (CHDC), and the Friendship Community Development Corporation (co-developer) held a celebration at the site of the new Friendship Senior Housing project, which is currently under construction in West Oakland. CHDC received an ECRG Cleanup grant for approximately $805,000, which enabled them to clean up the site to residential standards.

The City of Lynwood broke ground on the site of a future Northgate Market. The City attempted to redevelop the site for two decades, but was stymied by contamination. A $4.8-million-dollar ECRG Cleanup grant made it possible for a new grocery store, retail and 160 new full time jobs to come to the USDA-recognized food desert.

CCLR congratulates these successful grantees on their projects and wishes them ongoing success as they build equity in under-resourced and pollution-burdened California communities!
