Employ Prince George's had an incredible experience at the 2025 Raising the Bar Conference hosted by the Maryland Workforce Association! Team #EPG joined workforce development professionals and partners from across the region for two days of powerful seminars, networking, and collaboration.

A highlight of the conference was watching our President & CEO, Walter Simmons, accept the Raising the Bar in Leadership Award in memory of his late mother, Lenita Jacobs-Simmons. In a heartfelt tribute, the Maryland Workforce Association announced the award will now carry her name—honoring her lifelong dedication to advancing America’s workforce development system and empowering professionals nationwide.

What the latest jobs report means for you … buckle up

After years of plentiful employment opportunities, healthy pay bumps and pandemic savings-fueled spending sprees, American workers now face a sobering economic reality: It’s getting harder and harder to find work, and more and more industries are shedding jobs.

The latest jobs report, released Friday, indicated that the US economy added about 22,000 jobs in August and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3%, the highest it’s been in nearly four years.

The job market is “stalling,” Glassdoor economist Daniel Zhao told CNN on Friday, “it’s slowing to a dangerous speed.”

Workforce News & Highlights

5 lessons on the future of workforce and apprenticeship programs

The debate over how to build America’s skilled workforce often centers on two models: short-term workforce development programs and traditional trade apprenticeships. Both aim to prepare people for in-demand jobs, but they differ sharply in structure, duration, and outcomes.

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each pathway is essential for employers, policymakers, and jobseekers navigating a labor market under pressure. The Associated Builders and Contractors estimate that the construction industry will need more than 500,000 additional workers in 2025 alone.

How to Develop Readiness in Emerging Leaders

Just like elite athletes or musicians, future leaders need structured training to reach their full potential. In an environment defined by unrelenting change, high-performing organizations are taking a deliberate approach to leadership development: a business-aligned strategy that prepares rising talent to actively address the business challenges ahead.

One of the chief challenges in the modern workplace is change. According to a study by Accenture released in 2024, the rate of change across business factors such as labor productivity and IT spending increased 183% between 2019 and 2023.
