Keeping Families Home When They Need It Most
By Wendy Woodward, EPH Housing Stability Coach
Home is more than a place to live. It is where children feel secure, where families gather after long days, and where people find comfort during life's most difficult moments. When that stability is threatened, the impact extends far beyond a missed rent payment.
Every day, our Eviction Prevention Program meets families facing impossible choices. An unexpected medical bill, reduced work hours, car repairs, or rising living expenses can quickly place even the most hardworking households at risk of losing their homes. In these moments, timely support can make all the difference.
So far this year, our program has assisted over 100 families facing the very real possibility of eviction. While emergency financial assistance often provides the immediate relief needed to prevent a housing crisis, we know that lasting stability requires more than a one-time intervention. That belief is what sets our program apart.
We see each person who comes through our doors as more than a financial emergency. We take time to listen, understand their circumstances, and work alongside them to create a path forward. Through individualized case management and financial coaching, participants receive practical tools, guidance, and encouragement to strengthen their financial well-being and housing stability. 88% of the families served through this program have still avoided eviction when we follow up six months later.
The value of this approach is reflected in the number of people who choose to stay connected after the immediate crisis has passed. Since June, when we refreshed our Eviction Prevention approach, 70% of those we serve returned for case management services and financial coaching. 100% of them tell us that they learned a new financial skill during their initial meeting with us that will help them improve their future. Their continued engagement demonstrates that families are looking not only for short-term assistance, but also for trusted support as they work toward long-term goals.
Many participants tell us that one of the most meaningful aspects of the program is knowing they do not have to face challenges alone. A single conversation can help someone move from fear and uncertainty to having a plan and a renewed sense of hope. Financial assistance may help keep a family housed today, but ongoing support helps build confidence for tomorrow.
At the same time, the challenges facing our community continue to intensify. Rising rents, increasing utility costs, and the overall cost of living are creating significant pressure for many households. More families are finding themselves one unexpected expense away from a housing crisis than ever before.
Compared to last year, requests for assistance have doubled. We are seeing more first-time requests from people who have never before needed help and who are struggling to keep pace with rapidly changing economic realities. Behind every request is a story: a parent working multiple jobs, a family recovering from a medical setback, or someone trying to regain stability after a difficult chapter in life.
As the need grows, our commitment remains the same. We will continue to provide immediate solutions that prevent eviction while investing in the long-term stability of the families we serve.
Together with our church and community partners, we are doing more than preventing evictions. We are helping people remain rooted in their homes, maintain their dignity during difficult times, and build a stronger foundation for the future. Every family that stays housed represents a crisis averted, a future protected, and a reminder of what is possible when a community comes together to support its neighbors.
