ISSUE: 07 AUG 2023

Announcements

Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to take time to acknowledge and emphasize the importance of diversity and representation in the workforce, of people and ideas, and the value this brings to our educational environment, our research, how we provide service (clinical and organizational), and the culture of the department. Embracing and facilitating a confluence of different ideas, and ways of expressing them, is part of the American way. Sometimes new ideas, especially about the way things are done, can get buried by ideological arguments about change. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by welcoming new ideas and embracing change – all of which are markers of growth. William S. Burroughs, briefly a medical student, army soldier, and exterminator on his way to a renowned literary career, and someone whose books faced bans as late as 1965, wrote, “When you stop growing, you start dying”. In the way that we seek out new problems to solve, and amplify new voices, as a department we will avoid this fate. I challenge you in the coming months to listen for new ideas or share your own with me and others at work and outside. Be the person that questions the status quo and identify new and better ways of doing things. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow together with all of you in pursuit of our next new horizon.

We are on the road to 200 years as a department; let’s make the coming decade a successful one for all!

Best,

Jay Magaziner, PhD, MSHyg

NIH Application Instruction Updates

Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Costs

Effective for applications submitted for due dates on or after October 5, 2023, NIH will no longer require the use of the single DMS cost line item. NIH recognizes that DMS costs may be requested in many cost categories. Therefore, in line with our standard budget instructions, DMS costs must be requested in the appropriate cost category, e.g., personnel, equipment, supplies, and other expenses, following the instructions for the R&R Budget Form or PHS 398 Modular Budget Form, as applicable. While the single cost line item is no longer required, NIH will require applicants to specify estimated DMS cost details within the “Budget Justification” attachment of the R&R Budget Form or “Additional Narrative Justification” attachment of the PHS 398 Modular Budget Form, pursuant to the instructions. To see full notice, visit: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-23-161.html
