A Message from the Principal
Dear Eden Prairie High School Parents & Guardians,
This newsletter, EPHS Weekly, will be our primary way of sharing information with parents this school year. It will hit your inbox at 11:00 am on the first school day of the week. We commit to minimizing separate emails throughout the week and utilizing this avenue as much as we can. In return, we ask that you give this message a read each week. So you are aware, our primary mode of communication with students is daily video announcements called “EP Updates” that they watch in 3rd period. Additionally, students receive a “Daily Bulletin” email blast, we use Twitter and Instagram to acknowledge students more casually, and we’ll host “EP Connects” at 7:00 pm on the first Monday of every month on a timely topic (more on that later). More than anything, we want you to aware of what is happening at EPHS and we want to hear your feedback as we know quality communication is essential to partnership.
Thank you
Thank you for your partnership as we start a new year at EPHS. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Our Weekly Schedule
- What is Connections?
- Connections takes place on Tuesdays between periods 1 and 2 and is time built into our weekly schedule for students to connect and engage with peers and their Connections teacher. Students will participate in activities and discussions that create a sense of belonging. Students will stay with the same Connections class and teacher until graduation.
- What is Flex-time?
- Flex-time occurs on Tuesdays from 2:40 pm - 3:20 pm. Flex-time is intentional time for student choice, student-led clubs, drop-in academic support, and relationship building. Students can leave campus at 2:40 pm if personal transportation is available. Buses run at regular time for students remaining on campus for Flex-time (3:25 pm).
- What is CORE?
- CORE runs on Thursdays with our regular bell schedule and is the last 30 minutes of each class period. CORE is targeted time to ensure that each student receives personalized academic support around course essential learning targets. Teachers will support each student with plans for using CORE time during the last 30 of class on Thursdays.
Learning Model for Students Who Are Quarantined:
Please see below for the learning model for students who need to quarantine due to illness from or exposure to COVID-19. This learning model applies to students who are healthy enough to engage in learning from home.
- Families will notify EPHS’ COVID Site Coordinator, Associate Principal Clayton Ellis, and School Nurse, Carolyn Henning of exposure to COVID-19 or a COVID-19 related illness. Student’s attendance will be updated to reflect the need to quarantine and access learning from home.
- While quarantined and learning from home, students will follow their daily schedule and access each course’s agenda for the day at the beginning of the class period in Schoology. The default mode of instruction is asynchronous, meaning that students will be expected to follow course agendas and be prepared to engage in work independently as outlined and supported by the teacher.
- Quarantined students will have access to a personalized check-in with their teachers weekly. This could come in the form of a Zoom check-in or Schoology message. Each teacher will communicate the when and how of this check-in to students.
- While students are following their daily schedule, they will be available to engage in synchronous learning experiences as the teacher deems appropriate. These synchronous learning experiences will be communicated to students via the course’s daily agenda in Schoology.
- Student support teams will monitor extended quarantines and will work with families and teachers as needed on personalized plans and support for each student.
- Our quarantine learning model is intended to support students learning from home due to illness from or exposure to COVID-19. For absences that fall outside of this need, teachers and support teams will work with families and students on making up work missed as outlined in our student handbook.

Share your thoughts about supporting students in the pandemic recovery
As we come back to school, we are looking to sustain effective, new practices and also to get back to some familiar routines. Eden Prairie Schools is eligible for one-time, federal coronavirus-relief funds (called ESSER III). The purpose of this funding is to sustain the safe operation of schools and address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on our students.
As part of the application, we need your input. We are asking stakeholders of Eden Prairie Schools to participate in a ThoughtExchange. This is a process that allows our community to submit ideas and also to review the ideas of others. ThoughtExchange is confidential and supports shared input as we plan for the use of these one-time funds. This federal support is not designed to cover day-to-day operational costs (such as teachers, utilities, devices, transportation, etc.), which are paid through state funding and local property tax revenue.
Please give us your input, and review what your community members have to say, by Sept. 13. Multiple languages are supported in ThoughtExchange.

IS THE PTO RIGHT FOR YOU?
Get in on all the action, stay informed with the inside scoop, and make a difference for students and teachers! Your energy and ideas might be perfect as a volunteer on the PTO. It’s a fun group that meets just once a month and works to support teachers and provide information to parents. Next year we’ll need a Volunteer Coordinator and help with a new Small Grants Program. Please contact Laura Jester (president@ephspto.org) with questions or interest – we’d love to have you!
